Reagan held her hands up defensively. "Wait, I can expla-"
Abby pushed past her. "Don't worry, I'll protect you," Abby said quietly.
She raised her wand again. Reagan grabbed her wrist before she could cast another spell.
"WAIT!" Reagan yelled. "It's fine really, I just accidentally tripped. It's nothing really."
Reagan lowered her wand carefully. "Hmpf, well he should have watched where he was laying when you tripped." She said, folding her arms.
Eric got to his feet and dusted himself off. "Damn that hurts." He grumbled.
"Shut up you big crybaby. Reagan already healed you." Abby called from across the room.
Eric sighed. "Can I go now?" He asked hesitantly.
Reagan looked him over. Aside from having just been hit by an explosion, Eric was fine, albeit a bit singed, and his motor functions were restored. "You may go." Reagan conceded.
Eric exited the infirmary. And broke into a light jog, doing his best to navigate the twisting hallways of the mage academy.
Ten minutes later even he had to admit, he was hopelessly lost.
Meanwhile, back in the capital...
"Target in sight," Lucius whispered. The amulet around his neck glowed blue.
"Acknowledged, prepare to fire." A feminine voice replied.
"Firing," Lucius warned. He peered through the scope of the strange staff he was wielding.
Lucius was lying on his stomach on a table on the third story of an abandoned warehouse. He was holding a long metal rod with a sight attached to the top. As he carefully took aim the end of the rod began to glow red.
Lucius adjusted his aim, two clicks to the right, and...
"Fire." He whispered. There was a quiet pop and a red beam of energy shot from the end of the rod. It crackled through the air.
In a different warehouse some thousand yards away, the rooftop guard crumpled to the ground, a hole blasted clean through his skull.
Lucius shifted his aim and peered through the scope. "Target eliminated." He reported.
"Good work Lucius, I'll take it from here."
Lucius watched as a shadowy figure flitted across the rooftops, passing the fallen sentry, and then disappearing inside the building.
The figure stealthily crept through the empty building. They passed row after row of storage rooms, but they were all dark. Then, she met a staircase.
Descending carefully they reached an old door. Cautious not to make any noise they slowly cracked it open.
They peeked inside. Two guards, sleepy expressions making their exhaustion evident stood sentinel over the hallway.
The figure reached into their cloak and withdrew two daggers from its folds.
The door suddenly burst open. Before the guards could react daggers embedded themselves in their necks, cutting their vocal cords and silencing their screams.
The hooded figure threw off the heavy cloak, revealing themselves as a woman. Her armor was light but well crafted, and colored dark to blend with the shadows. She tapped an amulet strung around her neck.
"I'm in." She whispered. "So far the guards have been eliminated."
She walked down the hallway, calmly retrieving her knives on her way past.
