Then Raven’s face grew more serious and she turned to Tamarak. “Thanks,” she said, her voice very solemn. “You saved my life.”

Tamarak shrugged easily. “Sapphire and Jared were the one who made the potion,” he said. “I didn’t do anything special.”

“You did,” Raven and Sapphire insisted in unison.

Tamarak coloured a little, looking embarrassed. Kayla figured it was weird to get compliments from Sapphire, especially since they had just broken up and it was even weirder to get them from Raven, whom he barely knew. Granted, he had saved her life back in San Francisco, but since he had gone on a quest with Dahlia and Cedric while Raven had gone on a mission with Troy and Hunter, they did not know each other very well.

“So, what do we do in a day of funerals?” Kayla asked, changing the subject to save Tamarak from his obvious discomfort. He shot her a grateful look.

Since Sapphire, Tamarak and Romulus were the only people who really truly knew Kayla, she had come to rely on them more than she herself had realized. Yes, she loved Troy, but he was younger than she was and still did not understand in ways that only came with age and maturity. Sapphire was like the sister she had never had while Tamarak was like an older brother that, loyal as Troy was, he could never be. It made her a little uncomfortable to think that she was so dependent on them, but Kayla knew that they had her back through everything.

The only one of the trio that Kayla could not always trust was Romulus. Then again, she did not know him as closely as she knew the others. Sapphire did, but that was a subject that she had yet to broach with the other girl for as close as they were, they had never discussed Sapphire’s feelings for the two boys.

The bond that the trio- Kayla, Sapphire and Tamarak- was similar to the one that linked Troy and Dahlia. Even Helen, dead though she was, was closer to the pair than Kayla herself was; she might be Troy’s brother, but there were some things that bonds of blood could not overcome. And become of those links, it made things difficult with things such as trust.

But deep down, Kayla knew that they all had each other’s’ backs. They would put their lives on the line for one another, especially for Troy and Dahlia, not just because of the prophecy. The battles they had fought together linked them in more ways than one. It made Kayla all the more relieved when she thought about it; she could trust them to do what was right, not matter their faults. She herself was too stubborn, Troy was hot-tempered, Tamarak was impetuous and Dahlia and Sapphire were too sensitive in more ways than one. But that was what made them a good team, for despite their differences, they were good for one another.

“Kayla?” Sapphire asked, waving a hand in front of her face. “Are you with us?”

All of them looked concerned and Kayla mentally scolded herself for her lack of concentration. It would be just her luck if Varmer’s army decided to attack them while she was distracted by her own thoughts.

“Yeah,” she said, pushing aside all thoughts of Jenna, the prophecy and her friends; she shifted back to her detached self. “Sorry, what were you saying?”

“Tell them what to do later,” Sapphire replied. “During the day of funerals. Which, I should think that you want to listen too.”

Kayla forced all thoughts about her friends out of her head and tried to listen to what Sapphire was saying, all the while gripping her weapons; she had an uneasy feeling that something was not right.
