❝ ONE YEAR YOUVE
BEEN GONE ANOTHER
YEAR IVE BEEN LOST ❞
....
T O D A Y marks the one year since Niklaus Mikaelson has been dead. One of the best dads that have ever lived. He was a father to Hope and Serenity Mikaelson.
Both girls had different ways of handling the death of their father. Hope cried and hung out with her sister for comfort for weeks. They would hang out watch movies, share memories of their dad, and play games. Anyway to distract Hope from the fact their father is dead.
While Serenity helped Hope with her grieving, she didn't have much time to grieve herself. She would dabble in psychotropic herbs. A special herb she got from a friend who felt bad for her. She would inhale the vapor every to me she felt the need to talk to her dad and that was often. So often that she ended up getting addicted to the herb and couldn't stop. It got so bad that she couldn't go a day without having the herb. No one noticed, but Penelope Park. She saw what was happening to her friend and helped her get off the hallucinogenic drug. A week of withdrawal and she was able to keep face. No one knew what was happening to her so they assume she was taking the death of her father well. But she wasn't and she still isn't.
"Hey Serenity!" Hope called out to her sister, who was walking to class. Serenity turned and smiled at her younger sister.
"Hey Hope! What's up?" She asked smiling at the auburn hair beauty.
"Um you know today is the anniversary of dad's death, I was wondering if you'd want to hand out. Tonight like we always do." Hope asked with a hopeful smile. Truth is Serenity didn't want to think about this today. She wanted to go through out the day like it was normal, but she knew Hope needed this.
Serenity put on a fake smile and nodded, "Sure Hope! I'll see you tonight." Hope smiled and left to class. Leaving a saddened Serenity.
"What's got your down?" Kai asked from behind Serenity. Making Serenity turn and smile at the heretic. They hadn't spoke since Los Angelos and Serenity was really vulnerable. And she hated being vulnerable. You can say that she's like her dad in that way. Hates having weakness, believing that love is a weakness she can't afford, but was she kidding? She's a Bennett she can't help but to love. But loving Kai would set her up for disappointment.
"Nothing really Malachai." She shrugged. "I was just reading a really sad book. No happy ending. What are you doing here? I was sure Caroline would kick you out."
"Actually she offered me a teaching position. And it's mr. Parker to you." He corrected playfully.
Serenity chuckled at the teacher, "Well Mr. Parker, I have to get to class. Maybe I'll see you there." She said as she walked off. Kai watched as the teen walked by. His thoughts swirling with so many thoughts of her.
"You like her?" A voice asked from behind him. Kai turned to see an unfamiliar girl. She had short black hair and really pale skin. If Kai couldn't feel the witch magic radiating off of her he could've swore she was a vampire.
"Who are you?" Kai asked suspiciously.
"How rude of me. I'm Ridley."
"O K so we have 'John Tucker Must Die', 'Friday', and 'A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors'. Which one?" Serenity asked as she pulled out movies for their movie night. The wind outside was howling and the rain was coming down hard. Thunder was crackling. A storm was brewing.
"Nightmare on Elm!" Hope replied pouring the bag of popcorn into a bowl a. "And if we have time 'John Tucker Must Die'. God, I love that movie!"
Serenity giggled, "I do too. Jt was such an ass." Serenity flopped down on her sisters bed and smiled as she turned on the movie.
The whole night was full of laughs and jokes. Sometimes muting the tv and coming up with their own dialogue. They even got to finish John Tucker Must Die. When the second movie was finished Hope turned to her sister who was giggling.
"Serenity" she whispered seriously, making her sister raise her eyebrows. "Do you think dad found peace?"
Serenity sighed and moved closer to her sister. She didn't want to talk about this. She only wanted to watch tv and laugh with her sister. "Dad wasn't the best person, Hope. He's done some pretty horrible things to my mom and her family. Even to your mom and her family. He was a monster. But, to us he was a great man that would do anything to protect us. He would burn the world down to make us happy. But he was a horrible man."
"So dad hasn't found peace?" Hope whispered sadly.
"No he has. Everyone would love to paint Klaus Mikaelson as a villain when actuality he was everything that everyone was afraid to admit to themselves they were. He did anything to protect the people he cared for. And the last few years of his life he did everything right. People came to him looking for trouble. Greta, Lucien, Dahlia, and etc. No one didn't receive his wrath that wasn't meant for it. I promise Hope. Dad died doing what he did best, protecting his family. Us. We are all villains in other people's story. You the New Orleans witches. Me the firstborn freak with some fucked up genes. Hell we were the villains in Inadu's story. We can't change how they view us, but we can make sure our side of the story is heard. And I can't promise you won't become a villain in other peoples stories. But I promise Hope, you'll never be a villain in mines." She told her sister who hugged her.
"Thank you Reni." She whispered cuddling into her sister's embrace.
"Anytime little sister." She whispered back.
They basked in the comfortable silence until Hope spoke up. "Do you remember when we were younger and dad would read us bed time stories?"
"Yeah I do."
"I wish we could back to that time. When we were somewhat safe. When we were happy. When dad was alive. I miss him so much. He did so much to protect us, and I took it for granted." Hope said as a tear slipped out her eyes.
"I know hope. I do too."
"Can you stay til I fall asleep?"
"Of course little sister."
"I love you Reni." Hope mumbled as she drifted off to sleep.
"I love you too Hope" Hope fell asleep moments later and Serenity snuck out the room to go to her dorm.
When she got in her dorm she sighed and turned to her dresser. She sorted through her closet shelf looking for her box. Looking for it. She needed it, not in the 'I can't help but need it', but more like 'just one more time' kind of sense. She stumbled across an old chest that was engraved "Always and Forever". Her sister had gifted her it on her fifth birthday. They weren't good gift givers at the age, but Serenity cherished it, because it was from Hope.
She opened the chest to see a small baggie with grounded herbs and a gold plate. She took the herbs and spread it out on the plate in a line. She poured a little bit of water on the herbs and she whispered "incendia" lifting the herbs on fire. She waited five minutes for the herb to take its affect, but it didn't. She doubted it would work. The herb was a year old. It was most likely expired. She sighed and made her way to her bed. She instantly fell asleep.
But she had forgotten to put out the fire.
S E R E N I T Y awoke to being shook by a familiar voice.
"Little Devil wake up, please." The voice said amused.
Serenity opened her eyes, but her vision could only make out a a blonde red head man. She blinked a couple times, but her vision remained unfocused. "Huh? Who's there?"
"Come little demon it's time." The familiar voice said. Serenity's vision finally focused and she saw her father.
"Daddy?" She whispered sadly. "What's going on?" At the moment she took in her surroundings. She was on a beach, laying on the blanket.
"We're going swimming little one. Your sister and Hayley are already in the water. It's your turn." He said with a smile.
She lunged forward and hugged him. "You have no idea how much I missed you." She whispered into his shirt.
"I can imagine little demon." He whispered back with a smile. He pulled apart and grabbed her hand, dragging her towards the cliff above the ocean.
On her way she saw Josie and Lizzie with their birth mother and Ric laughing while Sebastian watched the family smirking.
She saw her mom and Damon eating ice cream and laughing.
Caroline and Stefan kissing enjoying the view.
She saw Kai with kids that looked like him and her heart skipped a beat seeing him and the kids laughing. He made eye contact with her and mouthed "I Love You" which made her heart flutter. She saw one of the kids run to her great grams and she smiled at the sight.
This was the life she wanted. A normal life. A life away from the supernatural drama. It was a beautiful dream. Too bad it was just a dream. Her and her father finally made to the water and she smiled at the sight. The water was clear. Hope, Hayley, and Elijah were in the water playing.
Hope looked up and grinned, "Jump in dad!" She yelled.
"Come in brother. The water is great, I swear by it." Elijah said smiling.
"And the noble Elijah always keeps his word." Hayley reassured.
"He's right dad! Come in! You too Reni!" She yelled.
Klaus turned to his daughter and smiled. "See you down." He said as he jumped off the cliff. Klaus made a big splash and she smiled.
"Good job dad!" She cheered on.
"Your turn Serenity!" Hope called out to her sister.
"I don't know Hope!" She said looking down.
"Come on, little one. I want to swim with you and your sister. The family I love so much." Klaus encouraged. She heard the rest of her family cheer her on.
"Okay I will!" They whooped and hollered. She took in a deep breathe before diving into the water.
Under the water she couldn't hear anything. It was nice and peaceful. The water felt nice against her skin like a fluffy blanket, that only wants to protect you. She leaned into the comforting water and shut her eyes. She felt herself being tugged down into the water and her eyes shot wide open. She looked down at her feet to herself smirking at her dragging herself down. She kicked and swam up only for the once beautiful scenery to be gone and replaced with fire and darkness.
Josie and Lizzie were dead, their hearts pulled out their chest. Sebastians head decapitated. Josette in her wedding dress with a stab wound. And Alaric dead with a bullet in his head.
Damon's head and arms were removed from his body and on fire. Bonnie's eyes rolled to the back of head as her body dropped down to the ground.
Stefan was on fire and was dragging Caroline with him closer ignoring her screaming and her pleading.
Elijah had a white oak stake in him and he screamed in agony as Genevieve plunged the papa Tunde's blade into his chest.
Hayley was being burned alive as Greta smirked at the vampire. Hayleys screams made her smile wider.
Kai was siphoning the lives out of the kids and slicing their throats. His smiling widening with each child's death.
And her sister who was screaming as New Orleans witches chanted while holding a knife around her.
She turned to look at her father who was smirking at her. "All of this, was because of you. Hope will die protecting you, your mother is a martyr and she'll do anything for you, and me and Elijah have already died for you. How can you live with yourself knowing you've done all this? Do you think about it? Because I do. I never found peace thanks to you." His once smirk turned into an angry expression. "It's your fault I'm dead. You killed me. You're the worse daughter ever." Serenity teared up hearing his words. It all felt so real. The death of her friends and family hurting her. "Don't worry I'm going to get my revenge." He sneered as he pushed her under water.
Serenity tried to fight her fathers grip. She thrashed as she came up and under the water. She struggled with her father till she felt herself being pulled down. She struggled against both grips, but it was no use. She felt herself growing tired and drained so she didn't fight the sleep. She drifted off to sleep under water. The last thing she saw was her father smirking at her, before it all went dark.
Kai Parker was in his office when he heard footsteps in the hallway. He looked up from his papers and went out to the door to find Serenity walking out the boarding house.
"Serenity?" He called out, but she just kept walking with a smile on her face. He went to follow, but he heard giggling. He turned around and saw Lizzie and Sebastian smiling and walking hand and hand. Kai cleared his throat and he looked at them curiously.
"Kai! What are you doing here?" Lizzie asked, looking like a deer caught in headlights.
"I was grading papers. What are you two doing here, curfew started at 10? It's 3 right now." Kai asked looking between the two teenagers.
"We were just studying-"
"You know what? I don't care. Was Serenity with you" he asked interrupting the old vampire. They furrowed their eyebrows and looked confused.
"Why would she be with us? She should be with Hope. She's not to be alone tonight." Lizzie said with a frown.
"Why isn't she to be alone?" Kai asked.
"Yesterday marks the one year of her father's death. She beats herself up about it every time." Lizzie answered.
"That's why she was acting weird yesterday and just now."
"Most likely. What do you mean just now?" Lizzie asked.
"She was giggling and smiling to herself. She didn't even seem like she was here. She seemed like she was seeing something else."
"Oh god. We need to go to her room now." Lizzie said to Kai before turning to her boyfriend. "Wake up Hope and Josie, please."
"Sure love." He said before speeding away.
"Come." Lizzie said to Kai as she walked to Serenity's room. When she got in the room she started to look around in her closet.
"What are you looking for?" Kai asked concerned.
"Last year Serenity was really going through it with dad's death. She blamed herself for it, but she kept up a pretty good front. She was there for Hope, but no one was there for her. What we didn't know was that she turned to a special herb. It was a hallucinogenic meaning she could see anything she wanted. My guess is she could see her father, talk to him, and depending on how much she had it could make her feel him. Like he was actually there. She had a journal logging everything she saw so naturally when I was snooping through her closet I found them both. Every night she would use the herb and she became dependent on it. She became addicted to it. She only became clean five months after when Penelope saw what was happening to her. It took her two weeks to get her clean and she hasn't had a relapse since. Until now." She said picking up the gold plate with the psychotropic herbs on it. "She forgot to put it out. She's sleep walking." She concluded to Kai.
Kai was staring out her window when he saw Serenity walking towards the lake. "You don't think those herbs would give her bad visions right."
"Most likely they're a year old." Lizzie said throwing the herbs away. "Why?"
"Because she's about to jump in the lake asleep!" Kai said alarmed. "We gotta stop her!"
"I'll go get Hope. You stop her." Lizzie said as Kai sped out the room to Serenity.
The sky started to thunder more viscously. The rain rained down harder. And the wind began to pick up harshly around them. Serenity made her to the board walk and looked over the water.
"Serenity! Stop!" He called out the slipping girl.
"Good job dad!" Serenity cheered on to the water. Kai furrowed his eyebrows and looked to see no one in the water.
"SERENITY STOP! YOURE ASLEEP!" Kai yelled at her again.
"I don't know Hope!" She said looking down at the water. Kai tried to speed towards her, but the wind was too powerful."Okay I will!" She told them as she inhaled before diving into the water.
"SERENITY!" Kai yelled as he tried to use his magic to control the wind. He chanted a spell and the wind around him calm down. He ran to the deck and he saw Serenity drifting out to sea. She looked like someone was trying to drown her. Kai jumped out to the water and swam towards her. Serenity struggled against the unknown force til she was fully submerged under the water. Kai looked for her above water and ducked down to see her underwater. He saw Serenity being dragged closer to the bottom and he swam down to her. When he finally got to her she was out like a lamp. Kai swam above water to see Hope, Lizzie, Josie, and Iris on the grass. Serenity was still and was not breathing.
"Oh my god! She's not breathing." Hope panicked as she listened for her sisters heart beat. Kai hovered on top of her and started to give her compressions.
"Come on. Come on." He pleads as he pumps her chest. Serenity gasp up coughing up water. The group sighs in relief. Hope tackles her sister in a hug.
"Serenity! You scared me!" She says holding onto Serenity for dear life. Serenity wept into her sister's arms. The reality of it all hitting her. Her father and uncle's death was her fault. They killed Klaus and Elijah, so why aren't they paying for it?
"I killed him." Serenity whispered quietly.
Hope pulled away and furrowed her eyebrows. "Who?"
"Dad." She whispered.
"You didn't kill him Serenity." Josie reassured as she rubbed her best friend's back.
Serenity shook her head disagreeing. "Why couldn't we wait? We wouldn't have been without him forever, Hope. Now he's gone. He stayed away to protect us and we were death of him. We were the downfall of the Mikaelsons."
Hope stood teary eyed at her sister's confession. She had no idea Serenity felt that way. She had thought Serenity gotten over it when she did. She hadn't seen Serenity cry about it or complain. She thought she was okay. How wrong she was.
"Y-you don't mean that." Hope mumbles as she looked at her heart broken sister.
"I do, Hope! Don't you ever feel that way? That we killed him?" Serenity asked.
Kai looked at her in shock. Sure his father wasn't the best and in the end he kill his own, but he did like his mother. So it hurt when he had to slit her throat. He sorta knew what she was going through, in his own murderous twisted way.
"We're going to go inside." Josie said as she grabbed her twin's and her uncle's arms to drag them away.
"Why do you feel that way?" Hope asked her sister.
"Because we did kill him, Hope. If it wasn't for us dad and uncle Elijah would still be alive." She told her sister as the rain poured over them. "If we weren't born they would still be here. Their death was to protect us, Hope. We are selfish. We make mess and expect others to fix it for us."
"No we don't." Hope denies as she shook her head.
"Hope your mother died trying to protect us. Because we trusted Roman." She said as she stood up and began to walk away. Hope instantly stood and grabbed her hand.
"Stop! Dad wouldn't want us blaming ourselves for his death!" She screamed at her sister ignoring the pang of hurt that rang through her chest.
"Because he knew it was true. Why else would he tell us it's not our fault? Face it, Hope we were the downfall of the Mikaelsons. We are everything that we afraid of being, selfish." Hope stood there in shook as her older sister walked away in tears. Serenity ran back to her room and slid down the door crying. She wished her dad was still there. She missed him so much. She had felt guilt ever since that day and it was eating away at her. If she was a vampire her humanity would be turned off by now. She was in pieces. Her father had died. Her hero. He died for her. How was she supposed to cope with that?
Serenity stood up and walked over to her desk. She sat down and took out a piece of paper and began to write.
Dear dad and uncle Elijah,
It's been a year since your death and I still haven't gotten over it. Remembrance day has passed already so this is more personal than mandatory. I miss you both. I miss uncle Elijah's boring lectures on history, him teaching me English, teaching me how to be proper which was totally unneeded. But I still miss it. I miss the nagging, the teaching, and the fun times which were rare but there. I miss you uncle Elijah. You were my uncle and one of my heroes. You were the hero in my story so thank you for saving me.
Dad I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you both died for me. I'm sorry that Hayley died because of us. I'm sorry we were dumb enough to trust Roman and to think we could defeat inadu. We just wanted to see you one more time. But we didn't think of the consequences of our actions. We were selfish and it ended up hurting you both. I am so sorry. Dad I miss you so much. I miss painting with you, I miss talking to you, and I miss you encouraging me to try even if I don't succeed. I miss it all. You were the glue that held me together and now you're gone. You took a piece of me when you died and seeing you dead as the ashes of your body were floating away hurt.
I'll never forget what you did for me. I love you so much and each day I miss you even more. I hoped you found peace. The both of you.
-Serenity Mikaelson Bennett
Serenity stopped writing and cried herself to sleep.
From peace Klaus watched his daughter with a frown. "I'm sorry little devil."
