I looked at her nervously and began twirling a lock of my hair, an unfortunately obvious sign of nervousness I happened to obtain when I was thirteen. Curse my stupid seventh grade teacher, always yelling at me.

I bit my lip, mumbling random unintelligible words, as I tried to come up with a believable story. I figured a giant hippo ate it wasn’t going to cut it.

“Well, I was in the bathroom-“ I started but Sherry interrupted me with, “Oh, yeah you were in there for a while. I hope you feel ok!”

I turned and glared at her before continuing, “And I did my business. I came out and there was a little girl waiting outside of the restroom. She was really dirty and skinny and I asked her if she was ok. We talked for a bit and it turns out she was homeless and hung around there. She looked cold so I gave her my cardigan. And I was not taking long time in the restroom, I was helping someone out who needed my help.”

I smiled to myself at the last part. At least part of my story was true. Unfortunately, the rest of it wasn’t. I really would have rather had it been a little girl then some guy who sleeps with lots of girls. I mean, everyone knows it. He is twenty-one, single, hot, famous, rich, and has access to any girl he wants, taken or not. And he makes out with that one chick on the show. I don’t even need to watch it to know that. Sherry rants about it more often than she should.

Sherry thinks about it for a moment, and then says, “You are too nice for your own good sometimes. You know what we should do? We should go to a waterpark!”

Josh and I both look at her like she is crazy. It is NOT the right time to go to a waterpark. The spring is nice, but not that nice. “Sherry, are you insane. Its sixty degrees outside. Sixty. And besides, I have to work tonight.” I say matter-of-factly. I work as a waitress in a sports bar and then on weekends I am a waitress at a small restaurant.

Josh shakes his head and ignores us. We drive him crazy sometimes, but he loves us. Plus, he is the only one with a working car, considering mine is in the shop for about three more weeks, and Sherry doesn’t have her license. His little blue Prius gets us everywhere we need to go.

I look out the window and all the plants. During the spring, all the flowers are in bloom. Its tree after tree of white flowers. I especially love the Rose bushes in front of our school. I pick them, even though the gardener, Jose, told me not to pick them repeatedly.

I smiled. I loved it here. New York City did not have a spring like this. This was my first year living on the west coast, and not New York. I will admit, I did miss being able to walk to places because they were so close and all the cool stuff there, and the snow, but I liked it here. New York City is not very home-y, and here, I felt right at home when I got here.

Josh cleared his throat and I snapped out of my thoughts. I realized we were pulling into our dorm parking lot. The dorms were boys and girls. Boys on the bottom floor, girls on the top floor. It got really annoying sometimes.

I grabbed my purse and got out of the car, tired and lazy. Sherry looked way to peppy and I decided then would be a good time for the paper. “Hey, Sherry, can we work on my psychology paper now?”

Sherry gave me a look and said, “Don’t you mean ‘Sherry, can you write my psychology paper for me now because I know nothing about it and really want a good grade?’ because that seems more likely.”

I smiled at her sheepishly before brushing a strand of blond hair out of my face. Then I said, “Well, it sounds worse when you put it that way, but yeah.”

She rolled her eyes. I frowned. Her chocolate brown eyes always made me jealous. With her shoulder length hair and curvy body, she was absolutely gorgeous. It was no wonder she was dating one of the hottest guys on campus. From what I heard, back when she lived in Florida she had lots of boyfriends. I have only had one, because I dated him from freshman year all the way to right before I started college, when I surprised him at his new campus and walked in on him and ‘Misty’. Yeah, still recovering from that.

I had blonde hair and green-blue eyes. Totally classic. Sometimes I thought about dying it red. And I had curves, but not as much as Sherry. I was more skinny, but I had abs. So ha, take that.

Of course, almost everyone here was good looking. In New York, a lot of people are experimental with their looks, but here, everyone is a beach god or goddess. This is why I fit in.

Sherry hooked her arm in mine and pulled me up to our room. I groaned as she sat me down on the bed next to her, grabbing my laptop. She started typing and it only took her about ten minutes. She was a really fast typer, which was not fair.

Once she was done typing all the psychology stuff, I took my laptop and I edited it so that the paper would be more English…-ey. Yes, I know, I totally talk like a English major. You don’t have to tell me.

There was a knock on the door and I looked at Sherry. We had a stare-off before she finally gave in and got up to answer the door. That was how it always went. I looked at the light purple door expectantly. Our room was really cute. Two light purple beds, a window next to mine with light purple curtains over it, lots of butterflies and cute girly white and light purple decorations. The walls were white but most of the furniture was the same light purple color.

Sherry opened the door and smiled wide. Sean was back. Sean had gone to visit his parents so Sherry was really excited to see him. She had seen him four days before, so I didn’t understand why, but I guess I probably wouldn’t know.

Sean walked in, saying hi to me briefly before engaging in pointless conversations with Sherry. I knew he really liked her, because I could read him. I had known him longer than the others because he went to my school during senior year and we had two classes together. When he liked a girl, he would make a lot of contact and always meet her eyes, and he would always run his hand through his hair when talking to her. If he felt like good friends with someone, he would smile a lot and give them hugs but not much other contact. If he didn’t like someone, he would clench his jaw and he would keep at least two feet between them at all times. If he was nervous, he would laugh at things that aren’t funny.

He was talking with Sherry and they were laughing and he kept running his hands through his brown hair and he kept touching her. I really did envy that relationship, but I had better grades, so it was kind of a trade-off.

Although, I really wanted a good job so I worked hard for grades. I planned to one day either before a professional writer or become an English teacher if the writing didn’t work out.

Of course, Sherry planned to be a psychologist, and “Didn’t need a back-up plan.” Of course, I know that her back up plan is becoming a stripper, I mean, exotic dancer.

I looked over and Sherry was glaring at me and Sean was giving me a confused look. I must’ve said that out loud. Oops. “Erm, why are you guys looking at me? Did I say that out loud? If so, I was, uh, totally joking, hehe.” I said, shrinking down.

They both let out awkward laughs and went back to their conversation. I could feel the heat in my cheeks, notifying me of the blush creeping onto them. Of course. “Well, I’m just gonna go… Somewhere else. My bed is off limits just saying!” I told them, saying the last part fast then walking out before Sherry could yell at me.

I walked to the student café to get some coffee. I really needed it. I walked in and there were about six people, including Troy. I rolled my eyes and hurried to the counter, hoping he wouldn’t notice me.

“Hi, can I get a small caramel frap please? Oh and a small green tea and a black coffee. Thanks!” I said to the girl working behind the counter. I handed her the exact amount of money. She seemed to be repeating my order in her head. She wrote it down and gave it to the guy getting drinks. He was obviously new.

I tried to wait as inconspicuously as I could, but Troy yawned and we made eye contact. Yikes.

“Here you go!” The girl behind the counter said, handing me my order. I started speed walking out of the shop and Troy started gathering his stuff as quickly as he could. I walked faster, hoping he would get the hint. By then I was regretting not checking what Sherry sent him.

“Paige! Wait up! PAAAAIIIIIGGGGGEEEE!” Troy yelled from behind me. I turned and he had this sloppy grin on his face. Why was he so happy to see me?

“What do you want Troy? Didn’t you get the text from me last night?” I snapped at him. He grinned even wider. Oh lord.

“Yes I got your text. I thought that was a great idea by the way! We should definitely do that sometime!” Troy replied, all happy and excited. I scowled.

“What do you mean…” I trailed off as I checked my phone, seeing the text Sherry sent. I was going to kill her.

The text was flirty and asking Troy out, recommending some things I have not done with anyone since my exboyfriend and I broke up. Ew.

I was going to kill Sherry.
