Footprints in the Snow
(epilogue)
I looked out through my living room window.
The heavy snow was being pushed by the wind.
Drifts were piling up quickly in the long driveway
and
the path to the house.
I could see the two figures standing
at opposite ends
of the driveway.
The man
was near the
house.
The woman
at the far end.
Quickly they ran to each other
oblivious
of the snow swirling
all around them.
As they fell
into each others arms ...
they
disappeared.
My wife,
Megan,
joined me
standing at the
living room window.
She passed me a glass
of red wine.
"Were they here?"
I nodded.
"I feel so bad for you."
Megan said.
I looked at Megan
shaking my head.
"Don't feel bad for me."
I looked back out the
living room window.
"Feel bad for
Richard
and
Donna."
Megan
put her arm through mine.
"I hope one day
they will find peace."
It had been
ten years
since the morning
I found them
in the field
a mere 5 feet apart
hands reaching out for the other.
They must have gotten lost
in the storm
the night before
and perished
a mere 5 feet apart.
Now
during every storm
they find each other
again
in front of
my house.
The house that had been
Richard's house.
I watched
as the wind and snow
took their
footprints
away
once again.
