The Vampire's Quest

Written by Jessica Minor

Chapter One

Three days after breaking the silver mushroom's curse, she and the faithful dragon were sitting in the courtyard, behind the castle. It had been a warm sun kissed afternoon, a beautiful day by far. After a few minutes, she didn't need her magick to sense he wanted something. Feeling the deep stare, turning and glaring back at him for several minutes.

"What is it?"

"Have you thought about the discussion from the other day?'

"What one?"

Shaking his head in disgust; then taking a deep breath before giving her the friendly reminder that was needed.

"An apprentice for you."

"Oh, that conversation... Why does it worry you, so?"

"It is only to help you, I promise.... Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have a swampload of things to do after returning from a long journey? Or possibly take a weekend off?"

"I see your point, but I still don't know."

"You need a break once in a while, we all do."

"Yes, but who would I get?'

"Who do you trust with the castle now?'

A few seconds later the figurative spark of thought hit her instantly, slowly whispering it to him; "Amberosia."

"I like that one."

"You like all of the servants."

"Not all of them, besides there's something.... Special about her."

"What if she says no?"

"You won't know until you ask, now will you?" He pointed out.

Rolling her eyes in a playful manner, then standing up and looking at him; "I will ask her soon enough. For now, I must get back to my spellbooks and potions."

The dragon gave a nod.

"Goodbye empress." He said before turning around and walking back to the cave.

Walking back inside, saying hello to a few of the servants with a soft polite smile, making her way around the corner and down the hall to the office. Stepping inside, slowly closing the door, then grabbing a few items she needed. Making her way to the desk, setting the items down, then slumped in the chair; letting out a sigh of relief. Ringing for the servant, waiting a little longer than usual when Gina finally opened the door carrying a mug and pot of brew. Once she'd set it down, the Empress dismissed her.

Gina bowed before exiting, to let the mistress of the castle relax with the pot of brew.

In a silent prayer, Ralvania thanked the mother goddess for the simple favor. Whenever she got going with magickal endeavors, loathed intrusions. It would spiritually knock her off balance. Then to start over, she'd need to do some meditative work to get back to where she needed to be. It wasn't always annoying, but at times just maddening. Checking the calendar, seeing why she felt a magickal power surge. All three moons were getting full at once, a triple full moon. It meant any magickal workings were three times as potent, great for spell casting. After a few minutes, thoughts began to wander. She felt maybe the dragon was right, perhaps she'd talk to Amberosia in a day or two. Maybe an apprentice wasn't a bad idea, she thought as the liquid energy began to kick in.

The biggest issue was training someone from the beginning. She'd trained Lily, but she had some magick, but Amberosia wasn't of a magickal bloodline. It made training her even harder a task. Sipping the contents of the mug slowly, going over her third spellbook of the moon phase. She'd gotten more clients than usual over the past few days. None of them were a life threatening emergency, standard stuff. Creatures needing a healing potion or a spell for good luck, protection spells for a few paranoid gnomes and gargoyles. At one point it had been a child unicorn with a cracked horn. She gave him an ease the pain potion, then sent him home. The usual stuff.
