A girl's bedroom, where a girl is sleeping. The alarm goes off, the girl, flustered, hurriedly silences it, rushes to make her bed, and quickly begins to change out of her nightclothes; suddenly she stops and happily reminds herself that she is not at home anymore. She then is seen happily walking to school, the only strange note being that she is all alone, although other girls are seen walking in the same direction. At the lunch break, after her school instruments fall from her desk and she stays behind to pick them up, she is approached by two girls (Saori and Hana), who ask her if she wants to eat lunch together with them. She nervously and shyly accepts; as they're getting their food, their names are revealed (respectively, Miho Nishizumi, Hana Isuzu and Saori Takebe). While they're eating, Miho declares that she's happy that she made some friends, but when asked by the others about why she transferred to Ooarai Girls Academy alone, she appears uncomfortable and they drop the issue.
Saori: Hey girl, you want to grab some lunch?
Miho: Huh? [realizes she was talking to her] Ah...
Hana: See that, Saori, you startled Nishizumi. You'll make a bad first impression.
Saori: Sorry, I was just trying to be funny.
Hana: Anyway, to repeat the question, if you would like to have lunch with us, we'd both be delighted.
In a dimly-lit room, three girls are heard discussing something and they agree that they will start their plans right away. In class, the three newfound friends deepen their friendship, with Saori revealing her fixation with boys (to the point of thinking of normal greetings as signs of interest), and Miho saying that she envies Hana's calm and mature behavior (to which she gives the reason that she has been doing flower arrangement all her life, although she worries she might be too stiff).
Hana: If she went out of her way to ask you to pick Tankery, you must be some sort of master fighter. Are you a war hero and were to shy to tell us? You don't have to be so humble about it. Tell us about your duels, your rampages, your extortion plots.
Just as Miho thanks them for being friends with her, the three girls from before (revealed to be the Student Council's members) enter the classroom and approach her. Drawing her aside, they assertively tell her that, when she chooses her mandatory elective activity, she should pick Sensha-dō. When Miho's protests, explaining that she believed the school didn't have Sensha-dō on their curriculum, they nonchalantly tell her that it has been reactivated and leave.
Miho is shocked by the encounter, so much that she is sent to the infirmary by the teacher; Hana and Saori, worried, feign being sick as well to reach her.
As soon as they're left alone, Hana and Saori ask Miho about what transpired. Miho eventually admits that she comes from a family with a long tradition of Sensha-dō (a traditional martial art exclusively for girls), but she hasn't got nice memories of it, and therefore came to Ooarai precisely to avoid such an activity. Her friends, now understanding why she reacted that way, tell her that she doesn't have to do it. Just then, the loudspeakers announce that every student should gather in the gym.
In the gym, the Student Council presents the electives activities, highlighting Sensha-dō and showing a promotional video which emphasizes its feminine qualities, then offering attractive benefits (meal tickets, academic credit) for those who choose Sensha-dō as their elective. Hana and Saori begin to look interested, but Miho is still very apprehensive. The other members of the initial five teams, shown in the audience, are also seen exhibiting interest. After school, both Miho's new friends state they would like to take up Sensha-dō, much to her horror.
After a troublesome night (in which she vividly remembers a tank falling into a river), in the morning Miho asks for their forgiveness as she has chosen incense as an elective and doesn't want to take up Sensha-dō again. Much to her surprise, both Saori and Hana support her decision and, despite having themselves initially chosen Sensha-dō, now change their choice to incense as well, wishing to remain close to her and not wanting her to suffer.
At lunch, as everyone around the school is displaying interest in Sensha-dō, Miho is called to see the Student Council; seeing her alarm, her friends volunteer to go with her. As the Student Council pressures her to reconsider her choice, Hana and Saori stand up for her, accusing them of being tyrannical, especially after the President gives a cryptic warning about the new friends "not being there the next year if they keep this up."
Miho: I come from a family with a long history of riding tanks.
Saori: Oh?
Hana: Wow!
Miho: But I don't like tanks much myself. That's why I came to this school, to try and avoid Tankery.
Saori: You pick whatever you like and we'll go with you.
Miho: No way, you two wanted to do Tankery.
Saori: It's fine, we want to be with you more.
Anzu: So, we've decided to end our school's current hiatus on Tankery. If you choose it as your elective, we'll give you a bunch of cool benefits. Vice president?
Yuzu: Those who do well in the course will receive one hundred meal tickets, two hundred free passes for if you're late, and finally, three times the credit you'd receive in another class.

Realizing that her two friends are putting her well-being above their own inclinations and aspirations, Miho summons her courage and blurts out that she will take up Sensha-dō, much to the Student Council's satisfaction and Miho's friends shock.
Later, in an ice cream shop, Hana and Saori ask Miho if she is alright with her decision, but she assures them she'll be fine, expressing how much she appreciated how someone showed concern for what she feels. She then recounts how her mother and sister expected her to dedicate her life to Sensha-dō, regardless of what she wanted. However, she is clearly still troubled, so her friends decide to cheer her up with the help of their ice cream.
[Saori and Hana are defending Miho's choice not to do Tankery]
Miho: These two wanted to do Tankery. And not only did they give up that, now they're fighting the student council too. They're doing this all for me. If I can just... [recalls a traumatizing Tankery match] Alright, that's fine.
Everyone: Huh?
Miho: I'll do it, I'll do Tankery.
The next morning, the girls that chose Sensha-dō gather before a huge warehouse. Twenty-one students have chosen that elective, including the Student Council, and the Student Council remark that this small group will have to do. Amidst much excitement, the warehouse doors are opened -only to reveal a single, rusted-up tank (a Panzer IV Ausf. D). While everyone balks at that, Miho approaches it and, after a cursory inspection, declares that it's still in good overall condition and they might be able to pull it off.
Meanwhile in warp.
As they traveled through space and time, multiverse, they screamed for eons as the tank commander was stoic expression as he saw his crew didn't feel mutated, as warp storm take them in another world.
Meanwhile back in gup universe.
As Saori, Hana, and Miho begin looking for tanks (in a parking lot first, as they are "both vehicles"), Miho notices a girl following them at a distance, apparently too shy to approach. When Miho confronts her and asks if she'd like to search for tanks with them, she seems very happy to join them and introduces herself as Yukari Akiyama. Oddly enough, she seems to already know who Miho is.
The first-year students are seen in a library, wondering where the tanks could be and why sensha-dō was discontinued; the other students' searches are not yet presented.
Back with Miho and the other girls, now in a forest, Hana suddenly senses a faint smell of iron and oil mingled with that of the flowers. The others are amazed, and speculate whether this sensitivity is due to her flower arrangement experience, or if it is her innate ability. Following the scent, they trace it to a Panzer 38(t). Yukari is very excited; so much so that she blurts out all the tank's history and characteristics -only to excuse herself when she sees the other's puzzlement with her behavior.
As they phone the Student Council about their discovery, a montage shows how other tanks are being found: The members of the defunct volleyball club find a Type 89B in a cave on a mountainside, the history buffs discover a StuG III sunk in a lake, while the first-years locate an M3 Lee in a rabbit hutch.
Momo: Well, our school got rid of Tankery several years ago but the tanks that were used should still be around here somewhere. No, I'm sure they're here. Our Tankery instructor should be here the day after tomorrow. We'll find the remaining four tanks before then.
Takako: Where do you think we might find them?
Anzu: We're looking for them because we don't know where they are.
Once the newfound tanks are lined up on the grounds near the warehouse, the Student Council assigns them: Momo assigns the Panzer IV to Miho and her three friends as "Team A" (eventually renamed Anglerfish Team), the Type 89B to the Volleyball club members, "Team B" (Duck Team ), the StuG III to the history buffs "Team C" (Hippo Team), the M3 Lee to the first-years "Team D" (Rabbit Team), keeping the Panzer 38(t) for the Student Council, "Team E" (Turtle Team). They are ordered to make their tanks presentable for the next morning. While the others take a moment to discuss their tanks, Miho immediately sets to work, observing that they will need to clean their tank and scrape off the rust.
As the teams clean their tanks, everyone works in their own way, introducing some of the groups' general characteristics: the history-buffs reminding each other of famous water-related historical events, the first-years behaving as if they were in a water park, and Anzu and Momo leaving their share to Yuzu. As the sun is setting, the cleaning is done, and the Automotive Club is tasked with taking care of the rest of the restoration. Yukari excitedly asks Miho if she's eager to drive their tank, but is taken aback by her unenthusiastic response.
Relaxing after their hard work, Yukari suggests that they go to a tank-related shop; when they get there Yukari shows even more of her tank-related knowledge while Saori reveals how little she knows of sensha-dō -as well as her desire to become popular. On the store's TV, an interview is screened with Maho Nishizumi, overall commander of Kuromorimine Girls' Academy, with Erika (vice commander) in the background. Maho looks a lot like Miho (their relationship is to be revealed only later) and is apparently a famous and successful sensha-dō participant; when asked the secret behind her victories, she answers that it is to never give up and never run away (part of the Nishizumi style), a statement that seems to have a subduing effect on Miho. Recognizing her friend's distress, to lighten the mood Saori quickly proposes for them to go over to Miho's house.
At Miho's house, as they prepare to make dinner, the situation becomes confused. Yukari takes out from her conspicuous backpack a whole mess kit (to Saori's amazement, she states that she brings it with her everywhere, to be ready at any time), while Hana cuts herself trying to peel the potatoes (she has never handled anything but flowers). An exasperated Saori takes things into her hands, bringing everything to order, and soon a tasty dinner is ready; she explains it's all part of her strategy to have guys fall in love with her -although the others are skeptical about her basing her plans on urban legends. After dinner, as the others are leaving for the night, Miho expresses her delight that someone is hanging out with her, and that she is glad she has transferred to Ooarai.
Saori: We did it, we found one.
Miho: A 38(t).
Saori: It's smaller than the last one. It's got screws all over the place.
Yukari: The 38(t). It was a mainstay of Field Marshal Rommel's 7th Panzer division, and was an important tank in the initial stages of the blitzkrieg. It's nimble and can cross distances quickly. Oh, and the t means that it was made in Czechoslovakia. It's not a unit of weight.
Saori: You went kind of crazy there.
The next morning, Miho gets a late start and is in a rush. As she hurries toward school she meets a girl who, apparently exhausted, is struggling to keep walking, muttering how mornings are painful and how she wishes that this was a dream. Miho helps her to reach the school and, at the entrance, a girl taking attendance remarks how the exhausted girl is chronically late, and that if she keeps this up her good grades won't save her from having to repeat the year; she also advises Miho to leave her to herself if she meets her again. As they leave the attendance monitor behind, the exhausted girl apologizes for making Miho late too, and promises that she will make it up to Miho.
Miho joins the others in waiting for the sensha-dō instructor, who soon arrives dramatically: a transport plane delivers a modern tank (a Type 10 MBT) using LAPES, which then accidentally crushes the Principal's Ferrari F40 (to Yuzu's horror) before joining the students. The woman who emerges -with considerable flair- is introduced as Captain Ami Chōno of the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force, their instructor. (Saori is considerably irritated at Anzu's "deception," leading her to believe the instructor would be a man). As Commander Chōno is introduced, she notices Miho and makes a point of greeting her, remarking how much Miho's mother helped her and inquiring about Miho's sister. At the puzzlement of the other students, Chōno matter-of-factly informs them about the great importance of the Nishizumi family and their "Nishizumi Style" school of sensha-dō. After this, she starts "teaching" them by declaring they will begin with a mock battle -to everyone's shock, as they have no experience even with driving their tanks, let alone combat.
As everyone prepares, more is revealed about the character of the different teams, the volleyball club members declaring their wish to revive their club, the history buffs discussing tactics, and the first-years searching the web for info on how to drive a tank. Ami instructs the teams to select members for each necessary role: commander, gunner, and driver, with on four- and five-crew teams the loader and the radio operator. Miho points out that their loader will have to double as the radio operator, but when Yukari suggests that Miho should be the commander, Miho vehemently refuses. To resove the uncertainty of who will be commander, Saori then has them draw lots.
It is eventually decided that Hana serves as driver, Saori as commander, Yukari as gunner, and Miho as loader and radio operator. In the initial excitement of learning how to start and drive the tank, Yukari's exuberance gets the best of her, and Miho needs to calm her down (much to Yukari's chagrin).
After a few rookie mistakes, all the teams get moving towards their starting position in a hilly, forested landscape. "Team A" begins learning how to work as a crew, with Miho teaching from her experience; for example, how the commander is to communicate with the driver over the tank's noise: kicking the driver on the shoulder, in the direction she wants to turn (after some initial reluctance, Saori is able to kick Hana on the shoulder, although a little too roughly).
??: Life is painful.
Miho: Huh?
Later
Momo: We found one of them.
Anzu: So they can get things done if they try.
Much later.
Saori: Which port were we going to visit? I have a boyfriend in every port so it's hard to keep track of where they all are.
Hana: I'll believe you if boyfriend means the curry place you always eat at.
Much much later.
Saori: I told you to go left.
Hana: Sorry, I couldn't hear you.
Miho: The tank commander indicates which way to go with her feet.
Saori: Feet?
Miho: Yeah, she kicks the operator in the shoulder of the direction she wants to go.
Saori: I couldn't do something like that to my good friend.
Hana: Kick me as hard as you can.
Saori: What? Fine, then left. [gives a hard, loud kick]
Hana: Could you kick me a little softer?
20 minutes later.
Ami: Tankery starts with a bow and ends with a bow. All contestants, bow.
Everyone: Let's have a good match.
Once all the tanks have reached their starting position, and after the traditional opening bow and declaration of good sportsmanship, Ami starts the practice match: a free-for-all "Annihilation Match," with the last tank standing as the winner.
Miho and the others take a moment to decide how to proceed, in the end accepting Saori's desire to get revenge on the Student Council for deceiving her about the instructor. Before they can move, however, Team B starts attacking them, with Team C also approaching, having formed an alliance. Saori immediately panics and screams for Hana to get them out of there, as their opponents' near-misses start falling around them.
Saori: Miho!

Meanwhile back in the gup universe.
The Panzer IV escaping its attackers, and Miho standing and looking out from the turret, only to see an apparently asleep girl laying on the grass with a book on her face. When Miho screams to get her attention, the girl rises and, as the Panzer comes near, jumps aboard, tripping and catching herself by the barrel of the bow machine gun. Miho recognizes her as the girl she helped earlier that day; when Saori peeks out of the cupola, she recognizes the girl as well, calling her Mako. She tells Miho that they are childhood friends. When Saori asks Mako what she is doing there, as she is supposed to be in class, Mako evades her question.
At that moment a near miss reminds them that the match is still on, and Miho hurries them all, including the new arrival, into the safety of the tank.
Arriving at a suspension bridge over a river, Miho jumps down and goes forward to guide Hana, knowing that they have some time before their opponents can fire again. As the Panzer IV cautiously begins to roll forward, it goes too far to the left, causing a cable to snap and the tank to begin tilting dangerously as the bridge sways. The StuG III fires again, hitting the Panzer IV in its rear armor, but doesn't knock it out (because it's sitting on the bridge). After a moment of shock, the crew has another nasty surprise: Hana was knocked out and they are unable to move. Seeing the Panzer IV in trouble, both the StuG III and the Type 89B move in for the kill. Just then strange tank appeared out of nowhere, and shoots it's strange weapon, at the tree missing StuG, and man with captain cap, angrily shout at his crew for the miss as the Adept of the Mechanicus, is checking the systems, it seems the aiming system is damage from the drop.

Tank Commander: Thank The EMPEROR!!! We manage to survive the warp.
Tactical Officer: Tank Commander! Our Auspex and Augury sensors are detecting strange tanks on the bridge and I dectect life signs a faint.
The Tactical Officer often serves as the tank's second-in-command and has to use the Auspex and Augury sensors of the Baneblade to identify roads, potential pitfalls, friend and foe, primary and secondary targets and assure the coordination between the tank and any other Imperial forces in the area. The position of Tactical Officer on a Baneblade is extremely demanding and requires a man or woman with a quick mind and nerves of steel.
Tank Commander: By the EMPEROR!!!
Driver: Right ahead!
Primary Gunner: Got it!

Tank Commander: Do it!

Ami Chōno postponed the match making the team A, as for the unknown tank that came out of nowhere and strange men Anzu Kadotani decided to take them in, who and what they are, what they came from.
Ami Chōno: We will postpone the match but the team A is the winner.
Anzu: Wait we must find who, where and what are they.
Ami Chōno: Theirs your responsibility.
Anzu Kadotani: Okay.
