Vault Tec

9.8K 77 61
By Shadow_trooper

A few days had passed since the the arrival of the pods. Dooku had placed the pod on his ship, and was holding a meeting of his commanders, Trench, and a few admirals, and Ventress were there in person, while a few were here through hologram, including Grievous. They were interested in what could be next.

The first "gift" if you can call it that was a bottle of carbonated fluid. Dooku opened the cap and sniffed it, it smelled sweet, before he had a few glasses brought out. He poured the glasses with ice in the empty glasses. Sliding them out to the gathered officers, they all looked at the fizzing liquid.

Palpatine with the senators were gathered again, and they each had a glass of Nuka Cola. They all raised the glasses, not sure what to expect.

Satine held the bottle, condensation rolling down the body of the bottle, and into her hand. The cool contents was fizzing from the small opening.

The Jedi gathered, Made up of Mace Windu, Anakin, Obi-wan, Ahsoka, Kit Fisto, and Aayla were in the room while a few were watching from communication stations on ships. Mace had set the bottle down, and had a few small cups from the cafeteria. Pouring the liquid in the cups, Fisto, Aayla, Ahsoka and Anakin held the glasses.

The Man in the suit appeared to Dooku and his group, holding a holographic glass, as he leaned on his golf club that he held like a cane.

"You lot must be joyous, to be some of the first to taste of the most popular drink in the wastes. Be happy." He said, lifting his glass up.

Everyone drank the Nuka cola, and many found the taste rather appealing, calming, very sweet and bubbled just enough it was nice. To a few the caffeine was rather surprising, filling them with Energy. Ahsoka's face, turned red as if it was even possible. She left the room, holding her shirt a bit. That would be sorted out later.

"Now, let's get to the next log, the beginning, as all stories do, at least the decent ones, it starts with a hole in the ground" the Jedi Hologram said.

This Presentation is Presented By Vault-Tec. Here's what you need to know when leaving the vault. Be sure to Remember these basic rules. Rule #1, line up in an orderly fashion. Rue #2, Use protective eyewear. Years of living in a vault makes your eyes sensitive to natural light without protective eyewear, extreme eye damage could be a result. Once outside the vault, be prepared to live life anew, with help of the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, Or G.E.C.K. Use the G.E.C.K to create the new world you've been waiting for (Results may vary)

*A commercial was playing, showing planet with " A Vault Tec Presentation" around it. A happy little tune played, and words popped up showing the rules that were being discussed. When the idea of eye damage was discussed, it showed an extreme example, or holes where the eyes were being shown on a cartoon character. When the G.E.C.K was shown, it was a suitcase, then cut to an image of a house*

The senators laughed at the silliness of the video, finding it rather exaggerated. "They know how to entertain at least" Orn Free Taa said.

Kit Fisto and Plo koon laughed at the silly video, it was a small chuckle. They both got side glances from Mace Windu.

On October 23rd 2077, the nightmares became all too real when the great war commenced. Blinding light filled the sky and people ducked and covered as they were taught, cowering under whatever they could, hoping if they kept their eyes closed, and kept still, the merciless flames would pass over them. They hid underneath their desks at school, under cars on the street, and behind desks at work.

*A mushroom cloud stated to rise in the distance. Cuts to a scientist under a desk, then children under a the desks.*

Their smiles faded, as they watched, seeing the destruction, took the humor of the start away.  It was a truth they was used in war....one told to planets in danger of being hit.

Kenobi rubbed his beard and covered his mouth, Anakin winced, closing his hand tightly, until the jedi felt something, an intense invisible heat, as if they were burning, but there was no pain.

Many of Dooku's officer's looked away, not wanting to see the destruction, it was......rough to witness. In war...they could see the enemy as enemies, but....those who don't fight....it was weight they really couldn't take off their minds.

Satine began to cry, putting her hands to her face, seeing the young being targeted is hard for her, she knew many who were caught up in violence, and she would help them.

Perhaps a few were in bed when the flash appeared on the horizon, and perhaps they drew their covers over their heads like children, hoping the searing pain was a bad dream

*Shows a couple in bed, before image changed to a set of skeletons in the bed*

Padme clenched her fist, thinking.....what if there was an attack when she and Anakin... "That is horrible to think of." Chuchi said.

Anakin's heart raced, fears of a possibility raced through his head, clenching his fist harder, it almost hurt his hand, thinking of the idea.

Dooku winced, the idea of a strike only being a dream was a fool's hope, death was something everyone faced. He looked at one admiral, small burn makes covered his hands, he rubbed his burned limb.

Satine wasn't watching, she couldn't bring herself to look at it, but she would listen, hoping for some good to come.

The Ballyhooed tactic of Duck and Cover proved ineffective against armies that no longer cared about winning. Mutually self-assured destruction was the goal, and the American Chineses exceeded it in spades. Hundreds of Millions of people lost their lives within minutes, and billions more died over the days to come as radioactive fallout settled over entire continents. The fallout Muddied Oceans, clouded the sky, and sunk deep in the soil

*Flaming skeleton, burned town with mushroom cloud rising higher into the distance.*

"This is why nuclear and atomic weapons are banned in war, they leave places devastated, and would leave those to suffer." Palpatine said, but in his mind, he laughed at the suffering he watched.

The Jedi felt sorrow, it was like a great weight on their shoulders, they held the lives of billions on their shoulders. A dread....but it was something that they could control.

Dooku and the Admirals watched, many having grim expressions, a war that had no value, just death.

Satine wept, tears rolled down her face. Why.....couldn't they be saved..

Those who happened to be in the right place at the moment the bombs fell managed to survive. A well timed spelunking vacation, a commute along the deepest subway tunnels, or the good fortune to live in a town in a place so remote that no one would ever think to bomb it. The "Lucky" few formed the primitive tribal societies that struggled for survival in the years immediately following the war.

*Shows group of people in an underground area, dressed in rugged clothing*

"Why tribes?" Chuchi asked, only to be answered "it most basic social structure we have. And the oldest." Padme said.

"Even in the hardest of times, people will work together to survive...there is some hope at least." Mace Windu said

Grievous looked knew the tribal life, the harsh nature to survive a hostile environment, against enemies who would fight back.

Satine looked up, hearing of survivors banding together to survive, it had some hope, and showed that not everywhere was destroyed completely.

Hidden from those tribal bands were another group of survivors. Those who had been selected for Project Safehouse. 100,000 people fortunate enough to have been offered shelter inside impregnable survival shelters called "Vaults", created by Vault Tec Corporation. The first vaults Opened again a few years after the war, and it's inhabitants slowly spread though out the wasteland. By now tales of the vaults have spread from coast to coast, although not many alive today have actually been inside one

*Slow zoom in on the vault door 112, fades to a group of people walking rocky ground*

The senators smiled, seeing some good that was done, in case of the worst to come. "So they were not numbered in order.....or at least standardized in size." Orn Free Taa said.

The Jedi watched, some having ideas, but most focusing on possible dangers, and ways they could help....but...something bothered them. Kenobi rubbed his beard.

"I wonder what knowledge has been left behind in them." Dooku said. "Many a good question, but I wonder who came from these vaults" Ventress stated

Satine smiled, survivors, thousands of survivors were safe from the destruction, and now they were old, and had full lives, with families.

At the height of Pre-war civilization, the government and a few powerful corporations knew that an apocalypse was brewing, so they used their finest technology to create vast subterranean bunkers that could withstand a nuclear blast, a meteor impact, global flooding or other likely disasters. The general public wasn't entirely convinced that their end was nigh, otherwise there would be a greater demand for vaults. When the war started there were only about a hundred of them, scattered across america, and many held less than 1000 people they were intended to hold.

*Shows bunker with pool table and juke box, two men in suite, faded to man in a house drinking a bottle, vault door 101 on it*

"Shelters in major cities would help with protecting citizens in case of attacks, or natural disaster." Bale said. "Yes, they would be an interesting addition but could be used as forts by the enemy." Chuchi said.

"They thought they had won, so they only wanted the minimum." Luminara said.

"I have a feeling that there is more to this act of good will than what is being told to us." Dooku said, knowing how business men work, focused on profit, not people.

Satine smiled, she had seen the good in Terrans, and was happy that they were working together, and when able. She knew not all people wanted to worry of war, and its best to block it out at times, but some precautions are better than none.

Those who were smart enough or lucky enough to be inside one when the end came were protected from the devastation by airtight steel doors, thick walls of concrete, and over 200 feet of soil. The fine engineers at Vault-tec designed their bunkers to run independently for 10 years, and even more. Geo-thermal power, hydroponic farm for growing food, and a water purification system so efficient, vault residents could fool themselves into thinking they weren't drinking their own Urine.

*Geothermal generator, hydroponic farms were shown*

"Good protection, and self-sustaining, resources. Seems good....mostly, maybe connect to a water shed though." Padme said. "Survival sometimes requires sacrifices of comfort." Mothma said.

A few of the Jedi were aware...it is also what they had to do on the ships in long transit periods, and some were a bit disgusted, others.....just accepted it as a way of life in isolation at times.

Dooku was disgusted, so were many of the officers, they knew it would be better to have stored water and gather it by condensation or from under ground sources.

"The made sure they were sustainable at least." Satine said to her council.

The Designers made the vaults as homely as possible, despite the steel clad walls. The cafeterias were designed to look like roadside diners and vault dwellers could close their eyes and imaging that they were eating a plate of Blamco Mac & Cheese, and sipping a glass of Sunset Sasparilla out at Dot's Diner.

*Shows 3 vault dwellers in vault suits at a table, before zooming out showing the entire diner themed cafeteria*

"I wouldn't mind trying a place like that out, if it was safe." Taa said. "Or if it was fancy enough." Bale joked, earn8ng a laugh from the twi'lek and the others.

"Sarsaparilla?" Anakin asked. "It's a drink like nuka cola, but different, made from a vine." the AI said.

"Would you happen to have some of this drink as well?" Dooku asked, only to hear "No."

Satine smiled, they tried to help the mental health, make them comfortable, help the people relax.

Shiny new medical robots tended to those who suffered from mundane illnesses and injuries, while on the surface billions died of radiation sickness, burns, starvation and violence, housing wasn't as spacious as on the surface, but there was plenty of room for several Hundred people and the vault that held a full thousand could work out fair ways to share their bunks for a while. Each Vault was run by a leader called the Overseer, who ran the Underground community from a command center, deep inside the complex. The overseers were, usually, selected for their exceptional leadership skills.

*shows a medical screen with X-rays, turns to show a destroyed toyn and playground, then showed people sleeping in beds, turns to a man at a small desk in a command desk.*

Padme felt glad, if not sad due to the reality, survivors had different experiences, but...it didn't seem right. She wished she could have helped, done something, anything, but...they didn't, and couldn't.

Satine was smiling, some leadership made to keep order was nice to have, but it would also be good if the people picked their leaders.

The vaults were usually comfortable enough, but after 10 years the radiation had gone down in most parts of the country, and the vault dwellers expected to head back up into the sunlight and begin rebuilding their flawed societies. Vault Tec had prepared them for anything they might await on the surface. The Vaults had all the research material they would need to rebuild America, including the entire Library of Congress on Holodisk, plus 101 recipes on how to cook rats,

*Show a walled town, man standing at a desk, before zooming in on desk and focusing on a square object with 2 reels in it*

"So they saved their history, but.....why rats?" Orn Free taa asked. "It probably is one of the few creatures that could survive that they knew before." Bale said, though disgusted at the idea.

"I wonder what we could learn." Kenobi said.

Dooku smiled, thinking, what designs of war could we find on that disk. What tactics, what powers could be harvested from that disk.

Satine smiled, hoping to learn of what history could be learned, what culture drawn from, what art and literature was saved.

Those who walked the wasteland know that the world isn't a kind place, sometimes people think of the pre-war days as a golden age. A time when people were better to each other, but there wouldn't have been an apocalypse if that were true. No, people were cruel and callous to each other even back then, and people who ran Vault Tec were no exception.

*Shows two people playing a game of pool, onto to fade into two people fighting*

Padme, Bale, Chuchi and Monthma felt some fear.....seeing that even the "good intentions" could....could end up.....turning bad. Palpatine internally smiled, and he leaned forward a bit, looking at the screen.

The Jedi, Anakin included, felt sorrow, for all the good that could be done, corruption took hold and now would lead to harm.

Dooku smiled, knowing what may come next, the corruption, the trickery, the exploration.

Satine's smile and curiosity were met with fear again, seeing that these people...would not do good for their good, but good for a price.

"We all heard about Vault City, a paradise built by the people who emerged from Vault 8, using a pre-war devise called the Garden of Eden Creation Kid. They represent what the old world could have been like if only Project Safehouse had been on the up and up. Unfortunately, Vault-tec had some ulterior motives, and vaults like Vault 8 were rare.

*Shows large area with a pool, clean medical center, several bath tubs full of water*

"Seems like a reasonable thing. many a place has had difficulty, but...to create a great new environment would be amazing to have." Orn Free Taa said.

"Seems way to nice to be good." Anakin said.

"Unexpected, I would expect the goal to be good, build up a new, setting rules of how to rule, to build a new and rebuild the old world." Dooku siad.

Satine, she and her council were drawn to a different thing, the Garden of Eden Creation Kit, they could bring life back to their home, no longer would they have to live in bio-domes, they could breathe the clean air of a reborn world, if they only had one.

The Poor fools who weathered the fallout in vault tec nuclear shelters were the control groups in horrible experiments. Keep people nice and safe for 10 years, then open up and build a new garden of Eden? That happened a few times out of a hundred vaults. Most vaults were designed to deliberately malfunction as part of an experiment to see how far the human mind could be pushed before it snapped.

*The clean vault was transformed into a poorly lit vault, dirty and messy, a man in a window, looking out*

Mon Mothma pinched the bridge of her nose, it was.....disappointing to see that people even wanting to do the right thing, were doing horrible things.

"That is probably a more accurate representation of how they look now." Aayla said.

Dooku frowned, many a fool, many a liar, many a victim. "We shall bring order to these people when they are found.

Satine was becoming nervous, maybe they waited longer with a few? Maybe they didn't get a GECK, it just, couldn't have been....as....horrible as what she was thinking about.

Unbeknownst to the vault dwellers, Vault tec and some elite factions of the government had their own shelters far away from the public vaults. These elite wanted to learn how to rebuilt society by observing the inhabitants of the defective vaults. Some of the vaults were designed so that their inhabitants would be trapped in Isolation for generations. Think 10 years locked in a vault is a rough trip? Try 80, or 200. There could even be people still sealed inside hidden vaults that haven't been opened yet.

*Shows scientists looking at a brain in a metallic case in a tube. Changes to a man in a diner, looking young, then turns old.*

Everyone watched, feeling uncomfortable, the idea of being in a small location, limited space, food would start to get bland, how long could one go without wanting to leave.

"They are monsters, putting people through suffering, taking their and mutilating the bodies of the people they were protecting.

Dooku rubbed his throat, Isolation, for decades....it was.....hard to accept as an idea. Many of them felt despair at the idea.

Satine was trying to think of justification, any, reason, maybe they may have been in areas that may be targeted harder with more specific types of bombs, that would leave lots of radiation.

Other vaults had experiments that only a lunatic could conceive. 1,000 men with only 1 woman, 1,000 women with just 1 man, or even 1 man trapped all alone with nothing but a crate of puppets for company. One vault even seemed like it was designed as a personal playground for a sadistic vault tec employee, who just wanted some poor souls to suffer forever in a virtual reality where he was a god in a world of his own making.

*It showed a still image of woman, near naked, surrounded by a group of men, slowly zooming in towards her. Changes to a dark area with many computer monitors and pods.*

The senators had a look of dread, trapped, locked in and unable to escape as they were assaulted....but they were feared....being alone for who knows how long would be worse. But to be a plaything of mad men was worse.

Many of the female jedi, felt the irony of their situation, they were the long women and were surrounded by hundreds of men, some started to feel slightly uncomfortable with this.

The commanders winced, the poor bastards trapped in that vault, there must have been many who cursed and fought over the sole way they could repopulate and survive. But...the sadistic employee, he was worse, keeping people trapped for their own pleasure. Dooku would see to his death personally.

Satine shook her head, the bastards were horrible, she wish she could strangle them, she wish she could put them on trial, for every bad thing they made people go through. She wished to avenge those who suffered.

You might be wondering if the vault dwellers ever figured out what was happening to them? Did any of them learn that their lives meant nothing to vault tec, and that they had become no more than lab rats in a mad experiment? Maybe the inhabitants thought that their own problems were accidental supply errors. Or maybe they realized what had happened and cursed Vault tec with their dying breathe

Shows a sign that originally read "Thank you, Overseer" but was covered up in a way to now read "Fuck you, Overseer", Changes to a group of people pounding on the inside of the door*

The Senators had a feeling, they would have similar feelings, if they found themselves in the situation, they would want to leave.

"I hope those bastards died suffering, by hands of their victims, and those they refused to keep safe." Anakin said. The Jedi could agree with this.

"This Vault tec, is an organization we stand against. We can agree, businesses who experiments on it's people are not protected here." Dooku said, earning agreements from many commanders.

"When we discover this planet, we will search for these vaults, and aid the survivors, and hunt those responsible for their suffering." Satine said to her council, many nodding in agreement.

Who knowns if these experiments turned up any useful information for the sons of whores who devised them. But all the suffering wasn't for nothing. Many Vaults did open, even if later than expected. Some of the people who emerged went onto great things for the wastelands. Parts of what use to be the capital of this land even has fresh water thanks to some helpful vault dwellers and technologies scavenged from the old vaults.

*Shows a long hallway, empty, then showed a group leaving a vault with "92" on their backs. Turns into a close up of a consol near the green tank, man at the consol, pressing large numbered buttons*

Padme released a breathe she unknowingly held. There was good in the world still, but it wasn't worth it if it was at the suffering of others.

"It's good that there are people who survived and now work to make the world better. I just hope that they are not a minority of the survivors who are rebuilding." Satine said.

Looters hoping to uncover riches in pre-war supplies should be wary of the vaults though, Project Safehouse has brought some troubles to the wastelands too. The Super Mutants, for instance, are connected to the corporation behind the vaults. Just remember wanderer, it isn't worth getting killed by mutants just because you heard about a stash of fancy lad snack cakes inside some old Vault's pantry.

*shows a scientist looking at a large muscular green creature, then a man in leather on the ground, pistol in hand, but dead on a dirty floor, then a room filled with toppled stacks of boxes, reading "Fancy Lad snack cakes" on it*

Padme and Bale gasped, seeing the back of the muscular supermutant. Palpatine leaned in closer, something about it....fascinated him in a way. Orn Free Taa made a comment "With that many I could see why someone would risk their life, that looks like enough to feed a town for a week."

"I think its a bit extreme, but clear in intentions, don't risk your life for something that might be too good to be true." Mace Windu said.

"We will use swarms of droids to clean the vaults of those who fight back, let us be clear when we do find this planet, we will take the vaults and clear them, take the people away from that world, and give them better lives." Dooku said.

"What are super mutants?" Satine wondered, and what damage could they unleash if they were hostile, the size alone was enough prove dangerous.

There's a whole city of whouls who came from one of the vaults. Sometimes you'll meet a ghoul who claimed to have been alive back before the bombs fell. Don't pay them no mind, unless unless they're wearing a vault 12 jumpsuit. In that vault, the door never sealed all the way. Maybe it Malfunctioned, Maybe it was more of Vault Tec's shenanigans, but the people inside got just the right dose of radiation to turn into the very first ghouls

*shows an large stone carved entrance, with a skull flanked by large pillars, turns to a vault door with "12" on it, zooms in to a small crack, showing a man inside*

"Those poor people, they must be in suffering, but....what is a ghoul? Is it a mutant of sorts?" Chuchi asked. "Information for later." the AI said.

"What's a ghoul?" Anakin asked, no one knew, and it wasn't explained yet.

"It must be by chance? The leadership wouldn't do something like that on purpose, it would be madness." Trench said, getting a few agreeing nods from other leaders.

Satine wanted to leave, she wanted to hide away and cry, but she needed to be strong, a strong leader, to be an example. "The glowing creature must have been a ghoul, it I was to guess, or maybe it has not been shown." she said.

The idea of a piece of the old world sealed fresh is just too romantic an idea for some people to resist. Of course, most wanderers have the sense to sat away from the vaults. If you really can't help yourself though, there's a city called New Vegas where people can get a look at the inside of a real live vault without having to worry about mutants, ghouls or old security vaults. Right in the middle fo the New vegas strio is an old Vault that they turned into a hotel so that travelers have some places to sleep while they waste their caps boozing, gambling and whoring. Tourists can grab a vault tec lunchbox in mint condition or a stylish vintage vault 21 jumpsuit

*zooms in on man, until changing to a Neon Sign reading "Vault 21 Hotel". It fades to an interior where some men cheered at some scantily clad women dancing at a pole and on tables, before changing to a shop interior, with a blonde in a jumpsuit "21" on her back, and lunchboxes on a counter near a terminal*

"If we could experience one as it was intended, a hotel....minus the casino and dancing girls, it would be nice." Palpatine said.

"Seems interesting, a good way to live, for a short while, and this....New Vegas.....seems interesting, it must have survived the great war." Plo Koon said.

"People will make use of what they can, and it seems safe enough." Nute Gunray said, watching the video.

Satine sighed, New vegas must be built on an old city, and it's people were known for being "entertainers" of sorts. She rolled her eyes, at least it is still in use for good reasons....mostly.

"We don't know how many vaults are still out there, undiscovered. They're hidden well and vault tec liked keeping their secrets. Maybe a few of these unknown vaults still have people living inside, the descendants of the first group of survivors. Or maybe there's a thriving society buried right under our feet, that doesn't even wonder what the outside world is like. Sooner or later though, that door has to open. Even the fine makers of the vaults couldn't build a system that could contain humanity forever. And when those vault dwellers take their first steps out into the bright sunlight and feel the sand of the wastelands beneath their feet, they'll find the world has changed a lot in 200 years. It's a big mean world, and their Overseer is small potatoes compared to some factions that run things now.

*Zooms into a rocky cave, a vault door with red light bareilly illuminating a faded "92" before changing to a dark room with a large box, "106" on the door, slowly fades to a white walled hall, with a "3" on the door, finally fades to a door with "11" shining on it, much brighter. Finally a door with 101 slides back and to the side, with a person standing at the door*

The Senators leaned in, many trying to think, what could threaten them? The people who built homes out of the apocalypse? Machines? Mutated animals?

"Super mutants? Ghouls? Other people? All could be a threat, so far we don't know what's on the surface." Anakin said, rubbing his chin.

"And we will be there to aid them in creating a new world order." Dooku said, having many a leader look at him, as the sith lord began a plan in his mind, for the future.

Satine stood up and walked to the window, looking out of it. "Mandalore will show them how to rebuild." Satine stated, looking out over her people.

There are those who view  who view the vaults as candy-shelled morsels filled with treats. Technology is nice, but the vaults held something even more precious, a pure gene pool uncontaminated by radiation or exposure to virus born mutagens. There are plenty of interested parties want to get their hands on a fresh supply of pure strain humans who have yet to be exposed to the harsh wastelands

*Shows shelves with nuka cola and snack cakes, then a large computer server. Shows vault dwellers eating in a cafeteria diner. Slowly fades, with a crackling as 3 glowing red lights and screens buzzed to life, what looked like a mass of organic material around...or even integrated to the technology, cuts to black*

Everyone froze, the presence of what they creature was, they didn't even see it, yet....something made them feel, like a dark presence, uncomfortable in every way. The senators felt cold chills run down their bodies, the glowing red light, looking at them, even though it was just a recording, what was that? Palpatine, wanted felt something, the darkside radiated from this being, it was intense, an evil, or rather a drive that the darkside fed upon, was being given off.

The Jedi were, scared, that was not a person, it was a monster, one born from the apocalypses, that could....that would be dangerous. It was as if a creature was manifestation of the dark side of the force.

Dooku watched the screen, the apparent mix of man and machine, was....dark, it wasn't natural in any ways. Many felt a heavy pressure on them as the screen showed the dark figure, who desired pure strain humans....like them, it was a monster.

Satine felt a pressure pressing down on her, the red glowing eyes looking at her, staring into her soul, "Pure strain human", it was many across the galaxy who could be called that, and it was that fact, it scarred her.

But that is a story for another day.

The screens ended, and a timer began, 3 weeks in time. The pods would not give more information for 3 weeks,
