Bratix lay in his bed starring at the ceiling, not moving, just content to lay and enjoy the early morning suns warm rays as they came through his window. He had no work today sense his father had let him have the day off to enjoy and to attend the egg ceremony.
He thought to himself "today might be the day, I may finally become a dragon rider!" Suddenly filled with energy, he jumped out of bed ready to start his day. He slipped on a simple orange tunic, some black pants, and a old pair of leather boots.
Not sure if anyone was awake yet or not, Bratix slipped out into the hall as quietly as possible and saw his father standing at the window starring at the city. Walking up to his father, Bratix said in a cherry mood "good morning father beautiful day isn't it?"
"That it is my boy I may go try and see if I have any luck fishing at the docks."
Bratix was slightly confused and asked " your not going to the egg ceremony today?"
His father shrugged saying
"I may later but I see no point in waiting around all day to watch people touch the dragon eggs, it's not very likely one will hatch here."
Bratix wasn't sure what to say, he didn't see it as a waste of time at all, just being in the presence of the elves and dragon eggs was enough to keep him happy even if a egg didn't hatch for him. As he walked to the kitchen to get something to eat Bratix thought about everything that would happen today when he heard his father call out
"Oh and Bratix, can you take Isaacs tools back to him before you go to the ceremony? I told him I would have them back to him by today."
Bratix sighed-he should have known better-his father never let him off with no work. He called back to his father in a sour voice saying "yes father."
After breakfast Bratix got Isaacs tools together and began walking towards the farmers house, sense it wasn't enough of a load to convince his father to let him use the horse.
As he walked he thought of the egg ceremony he was so excited he could hardly hold it in but yet he was somewhat nervous, and maybe even scared, what if he didn't get picked as a rider and someone else did? Or what if he did become a rider, he would have to abandon his home and everything he knows to travel far away to train with Eragon for years to come. Bratix decided not to over worry on himself over it, what will be will be and there's nothing he can do to change it.
Once Bratix finally passed the walls and came upon the farmers house he began looking around for any sign of Isaac,Nicholas, or Beatrice. He found the farmer mumbling under his breath as he was sowing his fields. Bratix called out to him, Isaac simply looked up and nodded his head slightly, then went back to sowing. Bratix had a bad feeling, Isaac wasn't a man you wanted to be around when upset, sighing Bratix walked over and said
"Hello Isaac how's things going?"
Isaac looked up furrowing his brow and said " how's things going, there going terrible! Nicholas ran off this morning to go to that stupid ceremony, I pulled my back tilling the fields, and lastly something killed half my chickens!"
Bratix was shocked and said " I'm sorry for your back luck Isaac i'd love to stay and talk but I have to get home to uh, help father with some work."
Isaac looked up somewhat angry it seemed and said " don't lie to me Bratix your going to that stupid ceremony same as everyone else."
Bratix just shook his head and said " sorry Isaac it won't happen again here's your tools." Isaac took his tools mumbling his thanks and gave Bratix the pay for his father. Bratix turned and once he was around the corner of the house and began to run as fast as possible, he didn't want to be around Isaac anymore the man scared him now same as he has when he was little.
Once he got back home he told his father what has transpired between himself and Isaac.
As Bratix finished, his father sighed and said " I hope that Nicholas will be ok, Isaac can be a rather... Harsh person when angered. You were right to leave when you did it could have gotten ugly."
Bratix shook his head and said " I hope he will be to Isaac was extremely angry over it."
His father nodded his head slightly and looked out the window, then back at Bratix and said "you should probably be going to that ceremony if you want to be anywhere near the front."
Bratix smiled with excitement " your probably right I will see you later for dinner" he yelled as he ran out the door.
He slightly heard his father call out " make sure you are home before dark!"
Bratix didn't stop running until he reached the center of Feinster where the ceremony will take place. He figured it would start soon most of the citizens were in the cities square and on the stage we're two pedestals with what looked like large rocks sitting on them, and standing beside them were the elves. The elves were beautiful, there movements graceful, and there smiles could warm you on the worst of days. There were two elves beside each pedestal and five total one elf standing in front, he guessed he would be the speaker. The rocks, which he guessed was the dragon eggs were stunning, the once on the left was at least the size of his head and a beautiful color of orange with blueish green lines running down it. The second egg was slightly larger and was a dark gray with green lines running down it.
Bratix made his way towards the front of the crowd while he watched the elves move.
Just As he reached the front of the crowd the elves began asking everyone to quiet down, once they had the fifth elf began speaking saying "Hello everyone I am Vanir and today we have come to your lovely city to see if one of you will become one of the first dragon riders of the new generation! Now if you would please split into two lines, one for the gray egg and one for the orange we can get started. All you have to do when you come up is touch the egg for about fifteen minutes and you will know if the egg picks you or not."
As everyone moved into the separate lines Bratix walked to the back of the line for the orange egg sense he wasn't in a hurry and had to friends to meet. Bratix kept to himself mostly, he kept busy with his work and he didn't like many people. The lines moved slow and by the time Bratix was almost to the front the sun was right above them indicating it was somewhere around noon. Bratix was only two people away from taking his first chance on becoming a dragon rider. Two turned into one and finally he was next up, as he walked towards the egg his heart pounded, this was the moment of truth it was finally his chance! He hesitantly reached out and looked up at the elf who nodded slightly and Bratix continued until he finally touched the egg. The egg seemed smaller up close, about three feet long and a foot wide and cool to the touch. Five minutes passed, then ten, and finally after fifteen the elf shouted "next" and Bratix walked off disappointed and frusturated.
As the last few people touched the eggs and nothing happened the elf Vanir came back up and said in a loud voice "now that everyone has touched the egg in there lines we will switched the eggs and repeat the process." So once again everyone lined up and the process began anew. About half way though the egg shook slightly and the person touching it was told to continue touching the egg. After half an hour Vanir announced that while he believed that the rider was close it was not the man touching the egg. And so the line continued Bratix's aniexty continued to grow, he was terrified that the egg wouldn't pick him, he wanted nothing more than to be a rider and wouldn't be able to take it if he wasn't chosen. Bratix felt like he was going to explode from anticipation as he saw there was only about 10 people in front of him. As each person walked up to the egg and it did nothing they left with a sour look. Finally it was Bratix's turn once again, he was so nervous he felt like he could run 100 miles and not tire, but as he saw the egg a strange calm came over him and he no longer worried over what was going to happen, all that mattered was touching the egg. The minutes ticked away and Bratix knew his time was tuning out he began to feel panicked. Just As he was sure they would call time the egg shook slightly under his hand. The elves stopped the lines and waited to see if it would happen again. The egg shook once again and squeaked as well, it slowly warmed up as Bratix touched it.
Vanir looked at Bratix and asked with a strange look on his face "what is your name?"
Bratix said " my name is Bratix Fredricsson"
Vanir shook his head slightly and, turning to the crowd, said "Hail Bratix! The new dragon rider!"
