Steven, Connie, Amethyst, and Blue sit on the boardwalk munching on Cotten candy. Blue shrunk herself down as much as she could for the outing, but she still stood at an amazing 11 feet tall. Steven said it would be a good idea to introduce the Diamonds to human food. First they had white try vanilla ice cream, she thought it was okay, too cold for her. Yellow tried a lemon cream pie, she absolutely hated it. And lastly they decided that blue should try Cotten candy.
Amethyst is cramming several tacos into her mouth at the same time.
A: "So Blue, watcha think?"
Blue perks up.
B: "Oh it's absolutely delightful! Thank you all so much for taking me here!"
A: "You think that's good, you should try French fries."
Steven: "*Gasp* we could get her the bits!"
B: "The...bits?"
S: "Yeah! Gimme a second!" Steven runs off.
There's a noise, a wailing in the distance.
B: "What's that?"
C: "Oh it's probably just a baby."
B: "A baby?"
C: "Yeah, a baby. It's like a little human."
The crying comes nearer.
A tired looking woman with a stroller walks along the boardwalk.
Connie points.
C: "That's a baby."
B: "Can I go look at it??"
C: "Uh, if the mother will let you.
A: "but don't get your hopes up."
As quietly as she could, blue walks up to the woman, the woman halts in her tracks.
B: "Um, hello, my name is blue, may I look at your...bay-bee?"
The woman's face is pale white.
Woman: "I..um.."
Connie walks over.
C: "Don't worry ma'am, she's mostly harmless."
The woman hesitantly nods. She pulls back the strollers visor.
Blues eyes go like stars.
The poor little squealing thing writhes in his stroller. His face is red from his fit.
B: "Hello little beybay. I'm blue..." she's star struck. "What's your name?"
C: "Oh, babies can't talk yet."
B: "*gasp* they can't?"
A: "nope."
Woman: "His name is Henry."
The baby opens his eyes and looks up at blue.
He's stopped crying.
Woman: "You got him to stop crying!?"
The baby lifts his hands up, trying to grab at blue.
B: "Ma- may I hold him?"
The woman hesitates for a minuet. Thinking 'well she did get him to stop crying...she seems safe enough...'
Woman: "Okay. But be careful, be really gentle."
The woman picks Henry up out of his stroller. Blue gets down and sits on her knees, putting her hands out.
The baby is small enough to lye in one of her hands, but she gingerly holds him with two.
B: "Hi little baybie..." she smiles at the boy.
He gives her a happy toothless baby smile back.
Blue swoons.
B: "Oh aren't you the cutest! So little and small! You're smile is absolutely adorable. Connie, if he's human, why is he so little? Why can't he talk?"
C: "Well, Babies are like brand new humans. Unlike gems, babies grow. In a few years he'll be able to talk, and eventually he'll be as big as me and Steven."
B: "Grow? Like plants?"
C: "Yeah...I guess so."
Blue takes her pinkie finger and very gently rubs Henry's belly. He bursts out in giggles.
B: "...He's so soft..."
Steven: "I'm baaack, I've got the bitttsss!"
Steven skids to a halt looking at the scene before him.
A smiling blue playing with a squealing baby in her hand. She laughs right along with him.
He looks at blue, then Connie, then the mother, sleeping on a bench-
S: "So...what's going on?"
Amethyst: "She saw a baby and I think she's going to steal it.
Steven walks over to the bench and gently shakes the mother.
S: "Excuse me, um, do you want to take your baby back? Our...friend gets attached easily." Woman: "Oh, yeah yeah *yawn*"
Woman: "Thank you so much for getting him to stop crying, but can I have him back now?"
Blue hesitates, Connie, Steven, and Amethyst give her a look.
B: "...Here you go. Thank you for letting me hold him..."
Steven waves to the lady and smiles, the walk away. Blue sniffs, her eyes damp.
S: "Come on, let's go home." Blue goes back to her normal size to make the walk quicker.
When they get back blue seems awfully down. Yellow and white come around the bend to meet them.
Yellow sees blues expression.
Y: "What's wrong with her?" 🤨
Blue lifts her head and looks at yellow. Her face is tear stained. She puts out her arms like a toddler that wants something. Knowing exactly what she wanted, yellow's demeanor changes immediately and she jogs over to hug her blue.
She rubs blues back as blue cries into her shoulder.
Y: "Oh what's wrong my sweet gem?" Yellow whispers to her.
B: "I saw the most magnificent thing today." Blue whispers back.
Y: "What was it?"
B: "A baybee..."
Y: "Oh?"
B: "It's like a tiny human. They're so small, and fragile, and they can't even talk yet..."
Y: "But, I don't understand what's upsetting you so much?"
Blue pulls away from yellow. Looking her straight in the face.
Speaking at her normal volume.
B: "Yellow, *sniff* I want one."
