madelyn sits inside her car and looks eli as he scrolls through his phone. she is honestly acting like joe goldberg but she doesn't care. she's not ready to get out of the comfort of her car and face elijah just yet. she knows she has to get out of the car at some point, but she doesn't want that point to be now.
truth is, madelyn isn't sure if she can break up with elijah. she wants to and knows she has to, but elijah has a slick tonuge. he says things that can make her rethink her entire life and she needs to build up strength before her encounter with him. she's knows for a fact that elijah is going to try to convince her not to end things, but she can't give him to him. like everyone has been saying, she needs to value her worth.
she's ready.
madelyn shakes off whatever doubt was previously in her mind and steps out of her car. she closes the car door behind her and stands up tall. elijah still hasn't noticed her yet and is just scrolling on his phone. he looks carefree and suddenly starts thinking like sav. shouldn't he be like... crying or something? madelyn laughs at her inner sav monologue and continues to walk.
maybe this break up will be easier than she thinks.
madelyn makes it over to the table elijah is sitting at and slides into the seat across from him. his head snaps up from his phone and they soften a bit. her gaze remains hard.
"i can explain everything," elijah immediately says as he puts his phone away in his pocket. "from the beginning." madelyn is genuinely curious to see what kind of lies he's going to try to come up with. she's confused as to why he insists on being with her of he's just going to cheat. what's the point?
"how about you just start with this," madelyn says as she unlocks her phone to picture of elijah and bella. "you and your ex?" elijah's mouth parts slightly but he quickly recovers. he always does. he always has something under his sleeve.
"that's old," elijah immediately says, grimacing as soon as he says it. "you know me and bella were together for a while." the photo can't be old. his hair looks exactly the way it looks right now. usually he's better at this.
madelyn nods as she puts her phone back in her pocket. "so why do you have the same hair? two years ago you didn't look like that."
elijah sighs and shakes his head. "okay it's recent," he admits, causing madelyn to frown. even though she knew it was the truth, it still hurt to hear him confirm it. "but it's from when we weren't talking."
madelyn scoffs and looks away from elijah. they weren't talking because of him. "so what? you went to her every time we were in a fight?" elijah's face changes and he furrows his brows.
"what else was i supposed to do?" elijah questions with a tone in his voice that tells madelyn that he is genuinely confused. "you were running to matt." madelyn rolls her eyes and decides to ignore his comment about matt. it's the only comeback elijah seems to have.
"so what i'm hearing is, is that this is been happening?" madelyn questions as she reopens her eyes to see elijah's jaw clenching. he looks kind of funny and madelyn has to stifle her laughing. "how long have you been telling her you love her?"
"i haven't been telling her that i love her," elijah immediately snaps. "just been hanging with her to pass time. nothing ever happened with us so i don't know why she was posting and sending around all those photos of us."
madelyn grimaces sarcastically at elijah's words. "seems like a bit of a toxic love between you too." she shrugs. "i guess she was tired of being your little secret."
"toxic?" elijah raises his brows. "did you just learn that word on tiktok or something?" elijah questions, causing madelyn to laugh. she couldn't hold it on anymore. elijah just swears she's stupid.
"your manipulation isn't working on me anymore," madelyn tells him with a shake of her head. that was the truth. the more elijah speaks, the more she sees how much of an idiot he truly is. "you can't use the fact that i love— loved you against me anymore."
elijah's face falls and regret washes over it. madelyn's heart hurts at the sight but she knows she absolutely has to stay strong. "why did you even stay with me? if you don't actually love me?" madelyn asks him. it's a genuine question. she wants to know why he has to use her the way he does.
"i do love—"
"you don't though," madelyn interrupts as she narrows her eyes at him. "maybe you love the way i look, especially by your side. maybe you love the way i love you. but you don't love me. if you did, you wouldn't have done what you did." she is starting to feel a lump buildup in her throat and the way elijah is staring at her isn't helping. "so i ask again. why?"
elijah stares at madelyn with a sad expression on his face. she can't make out if it's genuine, or another one of his tactics. she isn't sure if she'll ever be able to trust another guy after elijah. everything about him was just... fake.
"i do love you," elijah repeats. "only you and no one else." madelyn sighs and buries her face in her hands. a tear falls and she takes a deep breath to try to stop the rest of them from falling out. elijah reaches his hand out to touch her and she immediately jerks her hand away.
"you think you do but you don't," madelyn tells him with her voice breaking slightly. she didn't want to cry, but she couldn't stop herself. it wasn't even about elijah anymore. it was about herself. she let herself fall for a bad person. this was on her. "we're done elijah. for real this time."
"what? mads stop i—"
"no elijah," madelyn stands up from the table and takes a deep breath. "i'm breaking up with you. it's over." she doesn't even give elijah a chance to respond before she's turning her back and walking away from him. "and stop calling me mads. it's madelyn to you."
madelyn leaves elijah sitting at the table alone with his jaw dropped. she doesn't dare look back as she speed walks to her car. once she's inside, she has to hold the tears back so that she can drive away from the skatepark.
she tries to let the tears spill. elijah doesn't deserve any of her tears. she knows that but can't help herself. she has to pull over at a random gas station so that she doesn't crash her car or something.
it's over and that's almost hard for her to believe. but she knows it's for the better and that sav will force her to enter her 'bad b era' soon. so she cries in that parking lot and let's it all out.
