Part V: Times of Peril
Third Person, Omniscient
"What the fuck where have you been?" Carl scoffed standing from the chair and maneuvering around the table so they were face to face.
He wrapped his arms around her middle lifting her, "Told you she'd show up, this is becoming like the wolf who cried boy," Lucas hummed.
"You know that's not right which makes it even more stupid," the girl rolled her eyes looking up at the boy as he leaned down to press a chaste kiss to her lips.
Carl put her down reaching up with one hand to cradle her face, "Awesome, now where the fuck were you?"
Thalia's eyes flickered across his face as she glanced at his sunken tired eyes, cheeks red and eye covered by his normal pair of glasses.
"Oceanside, sorry I didn't leave a note I forgot."
The boy kissed her forehead wrapping her in another hug, "Yeah, next time leave a huge poster," he muttered burying his head into her shoulder and closing his eyes as his breathing evened out.
Lucas stood watching them with his arms crossed, they separated turning to face the man with their hands interlocked.
"I'm heading back, we're running low on, well everything. Please leave a note next time for the love of god."
Thalia stepped forward, "Actually can we talk, alone?" she asked turning around and nodding for the boy to leave.
"Come on I just got you back," Carl joked pulling the girl back and swaying her slightly.
"Go to my room and lay down, I'll be there soon." She hummed pushing him away toward the door as he groaned, a soft smile on his lips as he shut the door behind himself.
Once the two were alone she clasped her hands together and leaned forward.
"So I was talking to Lily about you."
Lucas tilted his head to the side sitting down in the chair in front of him as the younger did the same, his legs were spread out while his hands sat on the table in front of him.
"Yeah what'd she say?" he mumbled watching the girl as she picked at the skin around her fingers.
Thalia sighed looking up finally her legs crossed on top of the chair, "That you still call me surată, thought you stopped that after the prison."
The man shook his head smiling as he spoke, "Only if I'm telling a story or explaining something, just a force of habit I guess," he paused, "I spent the better part of my teenage years with you, just keeping you safe or that time my mom made me teach you how to play poker. Remember?"
Smiling the blonde nodded, "She made us use tree nuts as chips, you always let me win."
"That's because you sucked at it, and you needed the protein," Lucas quipped earning a small laugh from the girl, "I consider you higher above anyone else, myself included. My little surată, grandma always said using our original language made it more true."
The girl could recall all the stories he had told about her, how she rarely ever spoke English unless it was to yell.
Apparently, she also made a very good rum cake, Lucas never got to try but he and Bailey always got to see the aftermath.
"I'm sorry for all the times I've made you feel like you weren't my brother, after the CDC mess it all got foggy but, I love you. And I don't ever want you to think I don't"
Sitting up straighter the man pulled his chair closer so the space between them was smaller, "Don't worry about me, I know you well enough. Plus I tell you everything so if anything happens between us I have to put a bounty out."
"Fine by me, that means you have to tell me if you and Lily ever turn serious," she hummed standing from the table as the older shook his head.
"No way, you didn't give me a warning when the cowboy moved into your room," he argued following her out of the room.
Thalia shrugged, "That's because you would've said no, at least let me talk to her first just in case she secretly hates you."
Lucas shoved the girl away as he muttered a goodbye, heading toward the front gates.
The Barrington house had been stripped of all the strange artwork and stiff parameters, now every room was full. Whether it be families of two or a single like herself, technically not even with Carl's frequent visits.
Walking down the hall she turned sharply, finding her door. Opening it slightly she peeked inside where the boy was unpacking her bag and placing the folded clothes back into drawers, she slowly stepped inside letting the door close behind her.
Carl looked up briefly smiling at her before continuing to put away her clothes, he continued as she walked past him and pulled off her dirty shirt and pants. She slipped on fresh clothes sighing deeply as the boy tossed the duffel bag into the corner and closed the drawers.
Thalia lifted her arms smiling at the boy as he walked over wrapping his arms around her middle and pulling her up until her legs were wrapped around his waist.
"You look very tired, haven't been sleeping?" she mumbled running a hand through his hair as his eye closed, grip tightening on her waist.
"No, you were missing so my brain was preoccupied and I sleep better with you," his voice sounded like gravel as he spoke, walking them over to sit on the bed.
The girl rolled off of his lap to sit beside him her hand falling to hold his face, "You look like a walker, tomorrow we discuss your separation anxiety. Now, sleep."
Carl shifted so he was lying down with his head in her lap, eye closed as his hands fell to her thighs, "Yes ma'am."
Leaning back she curved into the bed letting her eyes close as she surprisingly felt the tiredness enter her body and push her to sleep.

When the pair woke up it was dark outside, they had managed to sleep through the rest of the day without being bothered only interrupted by Jesus who asked if they were eating dinner.
Which Carl replied to by tossing a pillow and mumbling something about candy.
After that they slept all the way until nearly four am waking up when the boy claimed he couldn't lay still anymore. He woke the girl up after poking her face for five minutes, finger cold which shocked her into opening her eyes.
Thalia groaned grabbing his hand and squeezing it tightly before pulling it away from her, "Why do you hate me?" she choked out her voice deep and low.
"That's not true I love you, I'm just bored and you're you," he whispered kissing her cheek as she squirmed away from him.
"If you love me you'll let me sleep, Carl please," she pleaded turning over so her back was facing him.
The boy tsked placing a hand on her waist as he tried to pull her back, "Just wake up for one second, I'll be quick."
Thalia groaned even louder turning over with her eyes still closed, "You hate me."
Her eyes opened annoyed to be met with harsh light from the candles glowing behind the boy's head, his hands grabbed her face pressing his lips against hers as he kissed her deeply.
The girl widened her eyes as he pulled her closer basically eating her face, their lips delved together as they both pressed into each other.
he pulled away quickly eyes lidded as he hovered over her.
"Morning," he grinned pushing her hair away from her face and behind her ears.
"How are you awake right now," she mumbled leaning forward to press her head against the boy's chest taking a deep breath as her eyes closed again, hands wrapped around his waist.
Carl sighed shifting so he was lying on his back, arm stuck under his head and the other one wrapped around the girl's shoulders pulling her into his side.
"Had to pee, you were knocked out so I snuck out and in pretty easily," he looked down reaching up to touch her face gently.
"Yeah I'm tired, my body feels like it's been through a meat slicer and I smoked a little bit," she grunted squirming away as the boy continued to poke at her face.
Her body did seriously hurt, she couldn't figure out what it was from but her back and arms felt like she had spent hours lifting something. Sadly her legs were in the same state, leaving her feeling sluggish and lifeless.
Thalia groaned, "I'm broken, my body has broken down."
Carl sat up fully, turning the lantern up so the entire room was illuminated, the girl didn't even attempt to move only shoving her face back into the blankets in hopes of finding darkness.
He lifted her carefully, letting her rest against his chest as he pressed a hand to her forehead, his hand pulled away a few seconds later his hand sweaty.
"You're burning up turn around," he mumbled watching as she slowly sat up, hands grabbing her face as she groaned again.
"It feels like I'm being lit on fire," her voice was rough as she leaned over the bed hand on her chest.
Thalia bent down, grabbing the waste bucket that sat next to the bed and emptying out the contents of her stomach, heaving as her throat scratched and her stomach churned.
Behind her a hand came to rest on her back, lifting her hair out of the way as she kept throwing up her eyes watering as she did.
Once she was sure it was over she leaned back up wiping her mouth with her hoodie sleeve before pulling it off, tossing it off of the bed as she tried to slip out of the thick joggers to reveal the shorts underneath.
"I'm fine, that helped a l- where are you going?"
"I'm gonna get some medicine, don't leave or I'll jump you," the boy stood up from the bed pulling a hoodie on and shoes before leaving the trailer letting the door slam behind him.
Thalia stood up slowly moving to the closet and discarding the pants on the floor, ducking down to pick up her canteen
She sat back down at the small couch across from the bed pulling her legs up on the cushions and resting her head against her knees, eyes closing as she tried to ignore the glaring light.
After ten minutes the boy finally returned, hand clenched into a fist as he painted heavily, "Take these, sleep, wake up all better," he huffed dropping the capsules into her open palm as he fell to the ground, hand pressed into his chest.
Thalia lifted her head looking down as he sighed sitting up, "I ran a lot, and now I'm dying," he panted.
"Thank you," she whispered taking the pills in her palm and swallowing them with water.
Standing up from the couch she trudged over to the bed, lying down on her back.
He fell next to her placing his arm over her stomach as they both turned off the lanterns, "Should've let me sleep."
"Should've stayed here with me," he hummed.
