Chapter 51

I sat in a room that I used to play in a lot. Surrounded by happy memories. When I look at my bed in the corner, I remember my mother reading stories to me. I looked at the dart board that has knives in it. I remember Janson teaching me that first.

We were a happy family even if I didn't know their potential in the future.

Now when I sit here in front of the mirror, I see a broken girl in a room filled with happiness. Now it feels dark, tiresome, tedious and dry.

I have been here in this dull room for over 3 months. I am not really allowed to leave, because the first time they let me out I might have killed 3 guards trying to escape.

I heard the door in my room open up and I turned around to see no other than Rat face standing there with a plate of my dinner.

He sat it down on my table and turned to look at me. This time there was something else. Instead of bringing me one portion of food there was now two.

"We are having dinner together, like we used to." Janson said, pulling out a chair and sitting in it. The scraping of the chair gave me a chill down my spine.

I went to the table and took a place before him.

We ate it in silent, which I liked very much. I would do anything to not hear his voice or even see him.

"Tomorrow we are going to take you down to the lab."

I tilted my head up to him. I tilted my head in confusion.

"Why?" I said shortly.

"Because I want you to see something." Was all he said before grabbing his empty plate and walking out the door.

I followed him with my eyes in confusion. Was he going to put me in as a subject now?

I went to my bed to get a goodnight sleep, if I had to fight, I would be ready. I fumbled with my bracelet Newt had given me.

It gave me hope. Hope that I would see him one day again and tell him what I didn't do that night.

My mind traveling to Newt was the only thing I thought about before I saw light shining through my window. The beams of light touching my pale skin. Seeing that I had fallen asleep earlier than usual.

I went to get dressed into some black tight jeans and a black crop top. I am happy that my younger self and I still had the same style.

Since I got my memories back, I started comparing her with me. My younger self was how I see myself now. I don't like to compare myself with my teenage self, as I said before I was a stuck-up bitch.

I got something small to eat from my fridge and I hid one of my knives between my jeans and hip. I was not going down without a fight. Even if the knife was made out of plastic. With the right speed and strength, it will go though human flesh with ease.

There was a hard knock on my door and it opened up. Two guards came inside with weapons in their hands. In the middle stood Janson, a big smile on his face.

"Where are you truly taking me." I said with anger lacing my voice.

"Don't worry." Janson began. "I am not going to use you as a subject, I am just going to show you why we do things here like we do."

I slowly nodded at him, but my guard didn't go down. The walls will not fall for a guy like him or anyone else that aren't the boys from the Maze.

We started walking down the halls that I knew like the back of my hand. We came through a door to see an open room. There were all medical stuff laying around, but my eyes went to one person.

Teresa.

She stood there proud in a white coat. She was tending a little girl on the bed, which I quickly noticed had the flare. Veins were rising from under her shirt all the way over her neck. Her eyes were a dark colour, almost black.

The door closed behind me and as I turned around I saw that there weren't any guards anymore.

"Cassie." Teresa spoke up, grabbing my attention.

I went to a nearby table and grabbed a small doctor's knife and walked straight towards the girl.

I grabbed her by her ponytail and tilted her head up. The cold knife against her neck, a small drop of blood rolled down her neck.

I heard the door open, but my eyes never left Teresa.

"Stop." She told the people who came in the room. Her eyes moved towards mine, "Before you kill me, let me explain."

I saw in the corner of my eye the people move away from the door. I released Teresa from my and she grabbed a cloth, wiping the blood away from her neck.

I should have killed her, right here. But a part of me still wanted to hear her out. If I don't like the answer the knife will be placed in the right spot... In her neck.

"Okay, go ahead. Explain." I told her, toying my knife in my hand. "Make it good."

Teresa nodded at me, not slightly phased by my actions.

She walked towards a table next to the girl. There was a needle with a blue liquid in it. The little girl who was no older than 8 followed her actions.

Teresa slowly put the needle into the arm and my eyes grew wide at what I saw.

Instead of seeing an almost transitioned crank I saw a normal looking girl. The veins on her neck disappeared and the black eyes turned a dark brown.

"What is that?" I pointed with the knife towards the needle in Teresa's hand.

"This is the cure." Teresa began. "Not the right cure at least. This is Shai, she has been infected by the Flare for over a year now."

"How is she still-" I didn't know the right words for it.

"Normal?" Teresa finished what I couldn't. "Because what I gave her only can keep her normal for so long. We still haven't found the right cure. To make the Flare disappear from her body."

She walked up closer to me.

"That is what we do here, we find the cure to make sure that the Flare stays away."

"By killing kids?" I dared to say to her.

"You are killing kids?" The girl Shai spoke up for the first time.

My eyes moved to her frightened face. Of course they didn't tell her. For that little needle to let her stay alive they have killed at least 5 other children.

I know it doesn't sound right as she is just a child. But children who aren't much older then her get killed and don't have a say in that. How can it be right that one person gets to live and five have to die for it.

I don't have anything against Shai, she seems like a nice kid. But she gets the chance to live her life to the fullest and the others have to suffer. Even if they killed one child for her, how is their life meaningless compared to her.

"No we are not." Teresa said to Shai, but she moved her eyes to me. I gave her a sorrowed look confirming that Teresa wasn't telling the truth.

Shai started to cry pretty and I got pulled out of the room by some guards. Teresa tried to cheer up Shai, but nothing worked.

The guards started taking me through the building further. They had guns in their hands, making sure I wouldn't pull anything.
