He knows.
"So what, Lennon?" I say, my voice trembling as my knees buckle at the stern expression on his face. "Why do you have to care?"
Lennon chuckles dryly, running a hand through his hair before locking eyes with mine.
My heart pounds faster, the weight of the conversation on my shoulders. I didn't think Lennon would care this much, let alone act like this.
"Because-" His voice rises sharply, but he stops, squeezing his eyes shut, his hand clutching the back of his neck as if trying to calm himself.
An uncomfortable silence falls between us. Because why? Why did he care so much? Why did he have to concern himself with everything I did, even when we were kids?
He finally speaks, his voice breaking the silence. His voice is low, almost too hard to hear.
"Because... I fucking love you, Y/n. And seeing you with him... the person I thought we hated... I just can't."
His words hang in the air, and for a moment, everything stops. My breath hitches, the room feels cold, the space between us suddenly too close. This wasn't real. A stupid dream that was unwilling to let me wake up.
I open my mouth to respond, but nothing comes out. The tension piling up suddenly collapses, the room feeling too small for the words I wanted to say, but couldn't.
Lennon's eyes search mine, but I can't meet his gaze. I look away, feeling a numbness spreading through me, dulling everything, even the pounding of my heart.
He takes a step back, small tears glazing over his eyes. The words of his confession settle in the small space between us, creating a small barrier I desperately wanted to break.
"Lennon...," I whisper, but the word fades away, lost in the pile of words in the back of my head.
He turns away slowly, the tension dissipating into an empty chamber, the soft click of his dorm's door indicating his departure.
I'm standing there, the silence too loud, with nothing but the echo of his words lingering in the air.
