Luna's POV
The forest seemed to shift and change around us as we followed Selene deeper into uncharted territory. I leaned heavily on Callum, my body still weak from the ordeal at the compound, but my resolve stronger than ever.
"How are you holding up?" Callum murmured, his arm secure around my waist.
I managed a small smile. "I'm okay. The baby's been quiet. I think... I think whatever we did pushed the entity back, at least for now."
Callum's relief was palpable, but I could still see the worry etched in the lines of his face. Before he could respond, Selene's voice drifted back to us.
"We're approaching the first veil," she announced. "Stay close. The path ahead is... unpredictable."
As if on cue, the air around us began to shimmer, like heat rising from sun-baked asphalt. I blinked, and suddenly the forest was... different. Older, somehow. The trees towered impossibly high, their bark glowing with a faint, ethereal light.
Gasps and murmurs of astonishment rippled through our group. I glanced back, seeing the mix of fear and wonder on the faces of our pack members.
"What is this place?" Rafe asked, his voice hushed with awe.
Selene's silver eyes seemed to glow in the strange light. "A realm between realms. The first of many we must pass through to reach the sanctuary."
As we pressed on, I felt a stirring within me. Not the cold, ancient presence of before, but something warmer. Our child, responding to this magical environment.
*"Beautiful, isn't it?"* a voice whispered in my mind. For a moment, I tensed, fearing the return of the entity. But this voice was different – lighter, almost playful. *"Don't be afraid, mama. I'm not them. I'm me. Your baby."*
Tears sprang to my eyes. "Callum," I breathed. "I... I can hear the baby. In my mind."
Callum's eyes widened, a mix of joy and concern flashing across his face. Before he could respond, a piercing howl cut through the air.
"We've got company!" Nora shouted from the rear of our group.
I turned to see shadowy forms materializing from the mist between the glowing trees. They moved with an unnatural grace, their eyes gleaming with an otherworldly hunger.
"Shadow wolves," Selene hissed. "Guardians of the veil. They seek to prevent passage of the living."
Callum pushed me behind him, his body tensing to shift. "How do we fight them?"
Selene's expression was grim. "We don't. We run."
What followed was a chaotic dash through the ever-changing forest. The world around us shifted with dizzying speed – one moment we were racing through a misty glade, the next scaling rocky cliffs that hadn't been there seconds before.
All the while, the shadow wolves pursued, their eerie howls echoing through dimensions.
I stumbled, my weakened body struggling to keep up. Without missing a beat, Callum scooped me into his arms, somehow managing to run even faster.
"Hold on," he growled, his eyes flashing alpha red. "I've got you. Both of you."
As we raced through this impossible landscape, I felt something building within me. The warm presence I now recognized as our child seemed to pulse in time with the shifting reality around us.
*"Let me help,"* the childish voice in my mind urged. *"I can see the path."*
Without fully understanding why, I placed my hand on Callum's chest. "Follow my directions," I said, my voice ringing with a certainty I didn't fully comprehend.
Guided by our unborn child's impossible awareness, we wove through the changing terrain. Left around a boulder that became a waterfall. Right through a curtain of vines that parted to reveal a hidden path.
Gradually, the howls of the shadow wolves faded behind us. The wild shifts in our surroundings began to slow, the landscape settling into a serene, moonlit forest glade.
Selene came to a stop, her breathing heavy but her eyes shining with triumph. "The first veil is passed," she announced. "We can rest here, for a time."
As Callum gently set me down, I saw the questions in his eyes. But before he could voice them, a new sensation washed over me. A pulling, urgent feeling centered low in my abdomen.
"Callum," I gasped, clutching my swollen belly. "I think... I think the baby's coming."
His eyes widened in shock and fear. "Now? But it's too soon, we're not ready, we're in the middle of—"
"Now," I confirmed, gritting my teeth against a contraction. "Ready or not."
As our pack scrambled to prepare for an impromptu birth in this mystical glade, I met Callum's gaze. Despite the fear, I saw love and determination shining in his eyes.
"Together?" he asked, taking my hand.
I nodded, squeezing his fingers. "Together."
Whatever came next – the birth, the prophecy, the battles ahead – we would face it as one. As a family. As a pack.
The true test of our bond was about to begin.
