James POV
"We are a good team." She said enthusiastically, looking at the violet-colored flame.
"Indeed we are." I chuckled at her childlike innocence. She is beautiful, have I shared classes with her before? And if I have, why haven't I noticed her before.
When I saw her standing there at the bar, all by herself. That's when she triggered something deep inside of me.
*Flashback*
I couldn't help but go talk to her. The beautiful girl who looked slightly uneased, like she didn't belong here. In contrast to most of the girls at clubs like this one, acting like they own the place, she looked like it was her first party or something like that. An urge to protect her surfaced, and I didn't even know the girl.
I saw she just ordered a drink so I walked over to the bar and ordered what she was drinking. She turned her head in disbelief -Did she know me- and looked me straight in the eye. She had an unusual and unique beauty.
I asked if I knew her but the music was rather loud to talk at a normal volume, so she couldn't understand my question. She oddly asked if I went to Dwight School, but I couldn't recall seeing her at school. Maybe she had a friend there?
Nope, I had been blind. She has been going to the same school – which isn't one with a large number of students- and I had never noticed her. Oh God, this is embarrassing.
"Bree, Bree Lockwood. You're James right?" She asked me hesitantly.
Bree Lockwood... I had heard her name before, but then again it could have been just her last name that spoke to me. At Dwight's every last name has a great value. Fuck... She did know my name. She probably thinks I am one of those superficial, self-centered jerks.
"Yeah, I continue to be amazed by the fact that apparently everyone knows my name, yet I don't know a single one of them." I tried to explain in an apologetic way.
She even knew I played football? Ok, I have to admit if she knows my name, she'll probably know I play football but still. She left me speechless. I can't lose my cool, I never have and I certainly won't over this girl. So I grabbed my drink and said goodbye as I walked away. But I couldn't just leave her like that. I looked back and smiled at her.
Why do I care what this girl thinks of me? That rarely happens...
I went to our usual table and joined the conversations.
"Hey man, what took you so long." Jake laughed while handing me a beer.
"Do you know a Bree Lockwood?" It didn't seem to ring a bell. "She goes to Dwight's as well."
"Sorry man, never heard of her." He said while taking a gulp of his beer bottle, "Why? Did you set your eyes on a new target?" He wiggled his eyebrows.
"Yeah right, you know me better than that pal." I smirked, "Girls aren't just trophies to me."
"Yeah yeah, I know. But to me, they are." He laughed.
"Hey guys, this is Bree, you might know her, or not. Either way just make some room so we can sit." Lydia said before sliding in.
Wow, Lydia knows her? I saw her talking to Luke as she sat down. He knows her as well?
"Hey Lydds, where do you know her from?"
"We share Art class. More even, we are project partners. She is a nice girl, a bit shy, but hey isn't everyone in the beginning?" She rattled. "Her dress is beautiful, I didn't know she was so fashionable. In class she mostly wears simple inconspicuous outfits, no make-up and her hair is a mess most of the time. But she has really proven me wrong tonight. That Tara girl must finally have taught her some beauty-wisdom."
"I talked to her earlier tonight," I broke her off, "and I didn't have a clue who she was." I admitted.
"Oooh, do you have a new love-interest?" She squealed. She is one of my best friends, but I swear to god, she has the ability to torture the hell out of people with her questions and the provocative way she asks them.
"Maybe, but don't tell anyone, I want to get to know her first." I winked at her.
"Your secret is safe with me, but only if you get her to dance with you tonight." She extended her hand.
"Deal." I grabbed her hand and we sealed our agreement with a short handshake.
Suddenly she stood up and walked away. Where is she going? Did Luke offend her? I looked around but she had disappeared in the crowd. Just as I was going to look for her she reappeared with another girl. That must be that Tara. I saw Bree sitting down while Tara and Luke ran off. Didn't they go on a date last week?
"They would make a cute couple." Angie said.
"I think so too." I heard Bree say.
Phew, I wasn't completely out of this world.
After drinking some beers, Bree stood up and wavered towards the balcony. This might be my chance.
I followed her. "Feels good, doesn't it?" I almost whispered in her ear. I could hear her gasp.
"Uh yeah, I needed this." she stammered.
"So I haven't gotten the chance to have a decent conversation with you, all night long. Can you believe that?" I opened the conversation that I had longed for all evening.
"Busy boy." She boldly said.
"Busy girl, if you ask me. All night long you have been walking around or chatting, but have you already danced?" I asked, implying she hadn't.
"What do you suggest I do?" This girl is not shy at all, but then again, it's not like she is sober either.
"It's just a suggestion, but maybe you should come back inside with me and... I'm gonna say something stupid here, dance with me?" I taunted her.
Luckily she accepted my invite. I guided her towards the dancefloor, as I lay my hand on her shoulder I could feel her tense up for a couple of seconds. Her innocencent behaviour is in sharp contrast to the boldness with which she speaks. We danced and I admired the grace with which she dances. Most girls prefer twerking and shaking everything they have. She just enjoyed herself in a decent way.
"How come I never noticed you before?" I asked her. She stopped dancing instantly.
Did I say something wrong?
"Here you are, I have been looking all over for you. We have to get back home. Cab's waiting" Tara said before dragging Bree away. I saw her trying to shout something but I couldn't understand her. When she had vanished, I went back to our table and told Lydia everything.
"I am so proud of you, she is the kind of girl that is definitely worthy of a great guy like you." She hugged me.
"So she has the Lydseal of approval?" I joked.
"Yes, she does. Come on, let's get wasted." She winked.
***
That's the last thing I remember. Before going completely wasted. That's the reason I was so hungover the morning-after, I think I crossed her in the hallway, but I'm not sure. I need to see her again.
I asked Lydds to help me. She has figured out which classes I share with Bree.
"You share gym and chemistry, you doofus, you have been sharing them since tenth grade." She said, rolling her eyes.
"Wow, or she transformed from an ugly duckling to this beauty overnight or I have been freaking blind all this time." I said in amazement.
"I think a bit of both." She chuckled, "Go admire your new muse." She said before running off to her class.
She does look different without make-up and fancy clothes, I established, but her beautiful eyes were still there. We had to do laps today, coach must be a little bit grouchy. I doubled her 3 times. But then again, I doubled most of the people several times, except for the other football players of course. I chuckled. After I changed back into my usual clothes and I saw her standing near the exit.
"See you in Chemistry." I said, hopefully this makes up for not recognizing her yesterday.
I had been looking forward to Chemistry all day, which is rather weird because, hell, who loves freaking chemistry. As I entered the classroom I saw her sitting all by herself. This is my chance. I smiled.
"Hey, we haven't had a chance to talk to each other properly yet." I flashed her my brightest smile.
"Yeah, ..." Oh what did I say wrong?
"Look, I had a great time Wednesday and I would like to get to know you a little bit better." I tried again. "The way you ran off is very ... unusual."
"As in not many girls run off that way?" Damn, she sees me as one of those self-centered jock types...
"Indeed, can you explain your actions, young lady?" I tried jokingly. She was drastically narrowing down my options...
"Well DAD, a cab was waiting outside for us and we had school yesterday. It's really self-explanatory if you ask me." Phew, the wink relaxed my tensed up mood on the inside.
"Class, today we will put our knowledge to good use. We are going to learn all about oxidation." Our teacher entered the class. "In other words, we are going to make fireworks and study the different colored flames. All of the necessary supplies are on the blackboard. You know the drill, get the stuff out of the cabinets and sit down. Your neighbor is your partner."
"We are a good team." She said enthusiastically, looking at the violet-colored flame.
"Indeed we are." I chuckled at her childlike innocence.
"See you next week? Or are you attending another party this weekend?" I tried.
"No this weekend is just laidback."
"Oh, ok, see you next week then." I smiled.
Man I feel good.
