I heard my phone ring, and I saw it was Alex. We were together for three years, but we broke up because she said she got the best job opportunity, and I wasn't going to stop her from going. She moved to Orlando, and she started seeing this guy that didn't know or knew his name. I knew something is up because we haven't spoken in almost year and half.
"Hello" I said
"Hi Tobin" she said
I smiled because I was hearing her voice, but then I knew she wasn't smiling back I couldn't hear it.
"That don't sound like you" I said.
"What are you talking about Tobin" she was saying back.
"What did he do? We haven't spoken in a very long time Alex" I tell her.
"Tobin I know but please don't hang up, I want to talk it's been long time, and I want to apologize. I miss my best friend" she said.
Flashback when she was in truck, the lake and how our times were so amazing before I let her go for that stupid job because I thought it was her biggest opportunity.
"Okay I accept and I let you go but... Why you cut your hair? Did he not like it?" I asked
"Tobin how did you know? It's growing now, and he's not the problem" she said.
"Okay well, I just remember the girl that did whatever whenever" I told her.
"Yeah I did didn't I" she said, and I smiled.
"Yeah splashing in the water" I whisper.
"Tobin stop" she said and I knew she was smiling.
"No" I demanded
"Tobin how have you been" she asked.
"I'm fine busy. That don't sound like you" I said.
"Tobin please this is hard" she answers back.
"Tell me you don't miss the truck tires on the gravel" I said.
"I do but this job is good Tobin" she said.
"That town, that job and that guy... You can leave them behind, girl, you know you're better than that. Come back baby come back" I said in a soft low tone.
"Tobs" she whispers.
"Blasting my radio, what did he do?" I say one more.
"I miss all of but..." She said, but I stop her.
"That don't sound like you. If you come back everything will be fine I'm still here and your friends" I say.
"Tobin I miss all of it; I miss you and them. My job is good trust me. Tobin I didn't call to fight I just want us to talk" she said.
I miss her so much that it was killing me. Why she cut her hair did he makes her? I hate the fact that she sounds so sad. I miss the fun, free spirit women I knew. That town doesn't need her, and that guy didn't deserve her either.
"Okay let's talk" I say.
We talked about our new lives, adventures and how our families missed us together. Other things like pets, new hobbies and just I was glad that was having a good time. It was a great conversation, but still it didn't sound like her.
"Well I have to go. We will talk again" she said.
"Okay Lex maybe I call later" I said.
"Are you trying to flirt, I'm taken" she said
"Well no but Lex I do still love you" I said in a firm voice.
"I know Tobin and I still love you too" she answers back, which made me heart beating faster.
"Alright I let you do. Girl I'm glad you called, first heard you talk. Took me a second cause, I couldn't hear your drawl" I have sung.
"Okay Tob's bye call me soon" she said before hanging the phone up.
Damn that didn't sound like her at all. "That isn't the girl, I knew you always sounded like truck tires on a gravel road. Laughing at the world, blasting my radio, doing whatever whenever you wanted. What did he do? Cause baby you don't sound like you anymore..." I had sung in my head.
I sat back down and stared out the window, saw the city lights and the rain hitting my window. I looked at our old photos with her long hair, and I smiled and was hoping she will return to this state and me.
