My 8th hour Spanish ended and I walked out of class putting my backpack over my shoulder and turning the music on my phone on. I put in my headphones, that Jacob had gotten me for my birthday ‘cause he knew how much I loved music. Spanish is right next to Tessa and Jacob’s 8th hour so we walked there together and left there together.
As I waited, someone was walking backwards and ran into me. And being my clumsy self, I flailed my arms and fell back onto my butt.
“Ouch.” I groaned.
“Sorry.” Tyler said. I looked up and my anger bubbled away.
“Oh, hey.” He smiled when he saw it was me.
“Hey.” I smiled back.
He held his hand out to pull me up and I took it. He grabbed my phone off the ground and snuck a quick look at it before handing it to me.
“Nice screensaver.” He grinned.
I looked down at my phone. It was of me, Bailey, Liz, and Tessa, all wearing different colored shades and bikinis, out in the snow sticking our tongues out. We’re crazy like that.
“Thanks.” I smiled.
Then I heard footsteps behind me and arms around my waist. Jacob. I rolled my eyes and Tyler smiled at me.
“See you later Lex. And if you need help with your part of the project just call me.” He smiled.
I nodded and watched him walk away. As soon as he walked out the door Jacob let go of me.
“Lex? Since when did he start calling you that? And you have his number?” Jacob asked.
“Ugh. Do not become my dad again. He’s been calling me that since 7th grade Jacob. And yes, I have his number.” I said as we walked to the doors.
“I have to be your dad when it comes to him. He keeps trying to steal you from me. You don’t know what it feels like.” Jacob said.
“Oh whatever. I don’t know if you remember but there have been numerous times this year that Destiny has tried to steal you from me. It doesn’t feel so great when little miss popular does that to a nobody.” I said.
Jacob got quiet. Destiny was the most popular girl in our grade. A stuck up, shitty, dumb-headed blonde if you ask me. I looked over at Jacob.
“Listen, all I’m saying is that you have to learn to deal with it. When you date someone like me, things won’t always happen how they’re supposed to.” I sighed.
“What do you mean?” He asked.
“I’m not popular, not everyone knows my name, and not everyone thinks I’m hot. Get used to it. I’ll never be as important as you are, in this crazy mixed up thing we call high school.” I half smiled.
Jacob pushed open and held the door for me. The buses had left and practically every student was in their car about to leave. I walked over to my little blue car that was parked next to Bailey’s but she’d already had left.
“Don’t say that. No one is more important than anyone.” Jacob said.
Quite the little motivational speaker isn’t he?
“If you say so. See you later, k?” I said.
He kinda zoned out staring the ground.
“Yeah. Sure.” He said when his attention was back on me.
I gave him a small smile and kissed his cheek. We hadn’t had our first real kiss yet, but I always kissed him on the cheek and he always kissed my forehead. And he kissed my nose too when he wanted to hear me laugh, ‘cause it makes me giggle (who knows why?).
He smiled and I got into my car and started it. I pulled out of the space and smiled at him. He grinned and winked at me like he had one of his evil plans, so I playfully stuck my tongue out and drove home.
“Lexi! Come here!” My dad yelled as soon as I closed the front door.
I walked upstairs to the bathroom and met him in there.
“Nice to see you to.” I sighed.
“What is this?” My dad said pointing at the window. It had big red letters taped to it that spelled out “I’m Dope!!!”
“You honestly think I did that?” I crossed my arms.
“That’s what you kids say now.” My dad said obviously angry.
“Did you even bother to accuse Jake of this? Or did you just suspect that I do everything?” I grumbled. He eyed me then I stormed out of the bathroom and went down the hall to my room.
Ok, so me and my dad aren’t that close. Well, truth is he isn’t my real dad. My mom got remarried when I was 7 and I never really liked him. His name is Kenneth. My mom’s new last name is Doval. Doval. I kept my last name, so did Jake. Jake is my 14, going on 15, year old brother.
We don’t like Kenneth. I went over to my desk and pulled my homework out of my backpack. I switched my lamp on and started. I heard Kenneth yelling at Jake and Jake snapping back at Kenneth. I grabbed my iPod and plugged in my headphones. I tuned the stress out and finished my homework.
Then I grabbed my sketch pad and started on a face. Who it was? I don’t know, then I heard a knock on my window. I whipped around and saw Jacob smiling outside my window. I groaned and walked over to my window.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, opening my window.
I helped him climb in and he sat on my bed.
“I thought we could study for history.” He grinned grabbing my hand.
“Our history test was last Monday Jacob.” I said.
“Fine you caught me. I just wanted to hang out with you.” Jacob smiled.
“You have to leave though.” I said firmly.
“Why?” Jacob said, his eyes getting sad.
“Kenneth would kill us both if he found out you were here. Leave now.” I said, pushing him back over to the window, hearing Kenneth’s voice getting closer.
“What if I don’t wanna leave?” Jacob whined.
“You have to! Just leave!” I blurted.
Jacob’s eyes grew wide and so did mine, at my voice. I wasn’t usually this… tense.
“I’m sorry Jacob. I’m doing this for you and me. I don’t wanna get you in trouble. If you go now, I’ll call you later and we’ll sneak out.” I grinned.
“Just you and me?” Jacob asked.
“Yep, all night.” I whispered getting close to him.
He grinned and nodded back. He looked like a little boy. I kissed his cheek and watched him climb out my window. He winked at me and just as he disappeared from sight Jake burst into my room. Not like I cared.
I thought he was Kenneth. Kenneth knew me and Jacob were going out but he didn’t know about our secret meetings. Jake new that I sneaked out, he didn’t care. He sneaked out, too. We were close like that.
“What happened?” I asked.
“That big shit bag grounded me for putting that on the window. I hate him.” Jake grumbled.
“Don’t we all?” I said sitting on my bed.
“So what are you in for?”’ Jake asked.
“Nothing. I was doing my homework and Jacob stopped by.” I shrugged.
“Oh.” He said.
Jake looked upset and kinda worried, which wasn’t his normal sneaky, cocky self.
“What’s wrong with you?” I asked sitting on my bed across from him.
He was leaning on my door looking down at the floor. He had that “I hate the world and everything on it, because of him” Look. We get that look a lot from living in this house.
“Nothing. Mom won’t be back until 9 tonight.” Jake sighed.
Our mom was the president of this big fancy company. She’s supposed to get off at 4, but doesn’t normally get home until 6.
“Great, so now who’s gonna distract Kenneth tonight?” I said.
Kenneth had this stupid rule that we can’t go out after 7 on Friday nights. Yeah, he’s serious. It was so stupid. I’m 17 for crying out loud! I should have a curfew of 11. Not 7! And here’s the even stupider part, when I was in 8th grade my curfew was 10. So every year he would bring it up an hour because at 17 I’m supposedly able to “get into more trouble with boys”. I swear that guy needs to get some major help.
“Why do you have to have him distracted? You’re 17 Alex, just go. You only have one more year left in this hell hole and then you’re gone. Forever.” Jake said.
He had a point.
“I guess.” I shrugged.
Jake pushed himself off the door and threw an envelope in my lap.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Your mail, you read it.” He said walking back to the door he opened the door and left.
I looked down at the envelope and the return address was from the Birdsong theatre. And in a split second I had my phone in my hand, had dialed Liz, Tessa, and Bailey’s number, and we were all screaming.
