Jace close the door. He was troubled with Jonathan's words. He knew his brother-in-law was good to manipulate and was good with words. Jace also knew he shouldn't keep him prisoner. So much for a supposedly intelligent boy.
Back when he was a young boy, Jace always thought he was weak minded. But now, there wasn't a more proper adjective to describe the young father.
"For so long, I pitied people as weakly minded as I am now. How ridiculous am I? A ghost from the past comes back and bam! I find myself holding prisoner an ex-demon."
Jace suddenly stopped his torturing thoughts, realizing something. He was back to the Institute's door without even realizing he was walking.
Jace took his black leather jacket. The first snow had fallen from the sky a week ago, and Jace had no jacket thick enough to prevent him from chattering his teeth.
He retraced Julian and Emma's footprints from yesterday. They were in the Institute for a couple of days, before going back to LA. They had a new "thing". Nearly everyday, they had to go out in the snow and just walk around. Clary found it very romantic and had Jace on the hunt for a new "thing" for them to.
The Shadowhunter de-glamoured himself so a taxi conductor could see him.
-Hey!
The taxi stopped and Jace got inside.
-The hospital. Nearest one.
He prepared a 20 because, want it or not, he was in a hurry.
The taxi passed Magnus's apartment, the ABC Avenue and the East River. Its water reflected the 5p.m sun. Ducks were swimming in the cold water with their babies following them and people sat on the benches all around the water with their families, laughing and throwing bread at the ducks. It was a good end of the day, except that Jace didn't look at the window at all. He looked at his feet, in some sort of trance. He couldn't figure out what to say to Clary about his brother. He only figured out that he was going to tell her.
The taxi stopped and it took a few seconds for Jace to realize that they were now at the hospital.
Jace got out of the taxi and walked to the hospital's front door like a zombie. Alec was waiting for him at the lobby. He took his best friend by the T-shirt and brought him to Izzy's room.
-Here he is, said Clary. Where were you?
-Playing babysitter with the kids. How come no one told me?
-I don't know, said Simon while Clary and Alec played deaf.
-And where's Magnus? You didn't tell him too?
-No, said Alec. He's getting ice chips.
-I'm going to see where he's at.
Jace got out of the little private room with Clary behind him. They went to the cafeteria but didn't find Magnus. Heading back to Izzy's room, Jace caught, in the corner of his eye, a room with no one in it. He took Clary by his hand and went in it.
-See? A room. With no one in it. This can be out new "thing".
He closed the door and slowly kissed Clary. He smelled like mint, lemon and a little bit like sweat. One of his hands was in her fuzzy hair and the other one on her hip. Clary let him kiss her and... Came back to reality. Izzy was giving birth two rooms on their left.
She gently pushed her husband apart.
-We can't, she said, looking like every word really cost her a lot. Izzy is having Simon's baby and we can't.
-Okay, said Jace while nodding.
The couple went back to Izzy's room. Magnus was there, eating ice chips and giving some to Isabelle. Dr.Loss was there too.
-So, he was saying. Who is Kristen Riverose?
-Kristen Riverose, repeated Catarina. I think I know her. Yeah, I know her. She's a vampire. Lives in the city.
-Brooklyn, decoded Simon.
-I have heard from other vampires that sun doesn't affect her, she continued, looking at the ex-Downworlder.
She smiled, appreciating the fact that everybody in the room was suspended to her words.
-I think, she said, that they are right. A simple vampire wouldn't be wanted by the Circle. I also heard that she is 300 years old. But it's only been 6 years since she began to resist the sun.
-But how could she, interrupted Clary. The only blood capable of doing that is mine and Jace's. And the only time I've given my blood is when they called me because I was a O-negative... Oh! There was a blood bank raid just after that!
-You remember that, asked Magnus, looking her like she was a suspect.
-Well, since it happened just after my blood was taken to that bank, I looked into it. They said only a few blood bags were taken. I guess mine was. But what I don't understand is why I have never heard of her.
-Simon wasn't very subtile. She must be, said Jace.
Simon gave him a dark look. He opened his mouth but Jace talked first.
-I think we should meet her. Obviously, she doesn't want to, but we can make sure we do.
Jace proposed a plan. Everybody seemed to have one, too. Finally, they all agreed on Alec's plan.
