May 27th, 2007.
Dearest Violet,
We were lost. Darkness was surrounding us and we couldn't see anything but the silhouette of the trees in the moonlight. We were eleven, and we were terrified.
Your parents had taken us camping. Rather, your family was going camping but you had decided that you wouldn't leave if I wasn't going as well. Thus, leaving me, to drop my PB&J at two in the afternoon, pack a bag quickly and hop in the car.
In the evening, your parents and their friends were gathered around a campfire. We had eaten too many marshmallows by that point and were probably too hyped on sugar to think straight. So, we escaped their night of drinking and laughter and ran into the forest. The only thing we carried was a walkie-talkie that we were told to take with us everywhere we went in case we got lost. Needless to say, we got lost.
We were having so much fun doing God knows what when we took a second to realize how far into the trees we had gotten. The walkie-talkie's signal was out of range and we didn't know what to do.
You were the brave one of us both. I'll admit that I was bawling my eyes out thinking that I'd never return home to eat another PB&J ever again. But you were always the brave one between the two of us. In anything, I knew I could count on you to make anything better.
I'm counting on you now, Vi. I'm counting on the fact that you will remember soon enough.
