The next day, Kathy remembered to bring a paint brush from home on her way to school. She hid it in her school bag. She had already told her mother she would be coming home a bit later than usual.
The day before, Lucy saw that Kathy was schooling at West Front Primary School and she walked home alone. So, Lucy concluded that Kathy could help her with her project. That is if she wanted to. Luckily, Kathy accepted. Furthermore, she had nothing to do at home.
Kathy was still curious at what Lucy plans to do with the box. After the shool bell rang, she hurried to the path she used before. She reached the place where she met Lucy for the first time. She thought if she had to really do this. But Lucy seems nice, she certainly did not want to upset her.
As she walked to the corner, she saw the box. It was still placed there like a figure out of place.
This time, she looked closely and found that it was made by sticking several boxes together. If she wasn't too shy, she could have just applauded Lucy for the work. It was amazing. She had stuck the edges of the boxes to each other using cello-tape. It looked like one single huge box from afar.
"There you are !" exclaimed Lucy, from behind the box. "Glad you came. Most people don't ."
"Yeah, and i brought the brush." said Lucy as she took out the battered old paint brush from her school bag and held it out in front of her. " Are we gonna paint it? What colour?"
Lucy smiled and held out her paint brush which looked like it had been used for years every day. But it was still usable. " You choose. I give you the honour. We have blue, red and green paint."
"Um, no thanks. It's your box so you're supposed to choose. " said Kathy.
" Well then, we choose together okay? I choose one colour, you choose the other"
Kathy grinned. Of course, she would choose the red. That was her favourite colour. Lucy chose blue.
Red and blue does look good together, don't you think?
As they both started painting the box, they had fun. It took them an hour or so. They laughed and talked while working. Most of the time, Lucy does the talking. Kathy mostly listens. She sometimes wonder if Lucy is the most active chatterbox in the world.
She would talk about nature or animals. And sometimes about stories or movies. She talked and talked as they painted.
Kathy told her about herself. Where she lives, with whom she lives and many more.
After a while, they were finally done. Both stepped back to admire their hard work. Kathy had never felt anything like it. She had never felt so proud. So proud of herself for doing something.
Lucy smiled widely, showing her ragged teeth in her mouth. She was amazed at their painting. It might not be as good as the Mona Lisa or any of Michelangelo's artwork, but it sure hit the spot.
There were green lines around the box covering the red painting on top and at the sides. There was also some blue dots at the bottom sides of the box.
" Wow, isn't that amazing. Well done, we did it this time." said Lucy to Kathy who was still holding the brush in her hands.
Kathy nodded in agreement. " It's been a great pleasure doing this. Thank you, i better get home now." said Kathy waiting for Lucy's response.
"No, thank YOU." said Lucy, stressing the word "you". " So, are we ever gonna meet again? Maybe tomorrow?" she asked.
" Maybe, if my mother allows me to come. " said Kathy as she washed her brush in the pail of water beside the box and wrapping it in newspaper. Then, she put it back in her bag.
Lucy quickly said " I haven't really done anything with the box yet. If you come tomorrow, we can play."
Kathy nodded and waved to Lucy . " Bye," . She ran back home feeling better.
