Coincidentally, I bump into Emil after storming out of the class.
"What's wrong with you? What's with the knife?" He takes a step back, staring at the sharp weapon in my hand. At this, I look at it too and look back to him.
"I got it back," is all I reply with.
"Yeah...I see that." The hallway we stand in seems darker than usual and it seems emptier, as if reflecting my emotions.
"What are you planning to do with it?" He asks me, finally finding the courage to take a step towards me again.
"Oh I don't know, revenge?" I joke but he doesn't seem fazed. "Return it of course." He sighs and nods, the silence forming between us extremely awkward.
"Look, I-" we begin in exact unison but we stop, looking at each other and laughing slightly.
"Go ahead," he tells me.
"I want you to know that if anything happens to Lukas, it's not me. I don't plan on doing anything to get revenge." I walk past Lukas and towards the window, where even though it's open it's unnaturally dark. I sink to the floor and sit, facing Emil.
"What do you plan on doing then?" He sits beside me, closer than any friend has ever sat...
"Being nice to him. I didn't deserve what he did and I need to show that."
"This is the Kaia I know." He utters under his breath, a heartwarming smile curling at the ends of his lips.
"How many apologies does it take, Emil?" He looks at me after I say this, the smile gone and in it's place: utter confusion. "After all I've done to you...you don't - didn't - deserve any of it!" I exclaim, feeling the tickling sensation of warm, salty tears sliding down my face and dripping after reaching my chin.
"It's okay, Kaia-" I shut him up. I shut him up by pressing my lips against his, finally realising who the real nice guy has been this whole time. I've been blinded by Mathias...even after being told Emil loved me I turned away.
Why would I do that to him?
After we pull away, neither of us say anything. Whether it's embarrassment, shock or sadness that's held in the silence either way it's strangely not that awkward.
"That was worth a thousand apologies." He manages to stutter out after moments of being held in that silence.
"I hope you accept them all." I stand, and brush of the dirt, offering a hand for Emil to get up, of which he gladly accepts.
"Of course I do," his eyes pierce mine and for the first time in a while, they going with happiness. "It was a pleasure talking to you." He goes to leave but I tug on his sleeve, stopping him.
"That wasn't a sorry kiss." I explain, looking sheepishly to the floor to attempt to hide the dark shade of red replacing my usual rosy glow.
"What was it then?"
"That was my attempt at an 'I love you' kiss." We both chuckle before going silent again.
"I heard that Aya girl got stabbed, too." He eventually says, filling the silence. I turn and smile at him.
"Well, isn't this school just a barrel of laughs." I remark and he also smiles, muttering a quiet 'yeah'.
"You'll be okay." He replies after a moment, referring to my wound.
"Yeah I'm sure I will be, thanks." I reply. I turn to leave but I'm stopped when Emil calls out my name.
"What does this make us?" Smiling and blushing like the flustered schoolgirl I am, I turn and chuckle.
"Whatever you want us to be." Was the only thing I could think to reply but he seems okay by it. In fact, more than okay. He seems happy.
"Yeah, okay." He chuckles in reply.
Well, after some you experience some rough patches and go through a lot, I suppose you realise the people you should really be with. Not everything has to be complicated but still...
I was just all mixed up.
