"Nathan."
I don't like talking to him. He hates me and I hate him. We both know it. So the shocked expression he gives me when he hears me address him, is not surprising.
He raises one fat eyebrow. "What is it sweet daughter? Wanna stick another pencil up my ass accidentally? Or perhaps clean up my bowl of soup by licking it clean with your filthy mouth then puking in it? Or maybe tear up all the documents I spent nights working on and then say the dog ate it!?"
"Huh. You really love holding grudges don't you Nathan?", I glare at him.
"Dad... stay...", Mia whispers.
For a second there, I swear I see all the dickness go away from Nathan's eyes. He looked like he cared for her, like he was worried.
But eyes are a manipulating trick. Even street dogs give you that I love you and won't hurt you look in their eyes for a second, but then when you pet them, they end up tearing your limbs apart just for fun.
"Take her with you", I choke. I don't want my sister to go away from me, but if that's what she wants...
"Nope", says mom, who's actually been pretty conveniently silent for the past five minutes. "No way. Nuh-uh."
"WHY NOT?!", shrieks Mia, pushing me aside.
Annnnddd let the battle commence.
Mom takes her sweet time as she oh-so gracefully descendes the stairs, her right hand skimming the off-white railing. What makes it even more dramatic is the fact that our staircase is in the middle of the house, and spirals. It's like a beautiful spring. "Because... I don't want you to."
"I HAVE A SAY IN WHOM I CHOOSE TO GO WITH. YOU DON'T OWN ME!"
"Mia..." Now mom stands infront of her and it worries me, because this situation might turn physically violent. "Listen to me." She places her hands on Mia's shoulders. "You're my daughter, not his. He doesn't deserve someone like you. He'll never treat you right. Plus, he's not even your biological father, remember? Your dad... died. I know it's hard but don't waste your life on him baby."
"It's not like you've done anything more than him for me either", she sobs. "You hate me."
A weird uneasiness spreads through my stomach hearing that from Mia. She never ceases to surprise me with her choice of words. She's a smart girl, although she can be a brat at times, but as far as I've seen, that's how spoiled kids usually are.
But for the love of God and all that's holy has she been blind for the past 12 years?
"I do. I promise I do. Just give me a chance Mia. I just got you back."
They look at eachother forever. "Please..", mom begs. "I can't live without you, baby. You're my everything. You all are. I love you Mia. Please don't go with him." And after the longest time ever, mom breaks all her walls down to show Mia how she really feels.
A tear silently slides down her cheek and her beautiful eyes start to fill up with all the longing emotions that she hides from us. It does the trick, because Mia bursts out crying once again and burries her head in my mother's chest.
Emotions. Feelings. My stomach churns.
"AAAAAAAAAA!", I yell at the top of my lungs, idiotically disturbing the very emotional moment. I press my palms to my ears trying to mute out the awful ear raping car horn blaring outside.
"MAKE IT STOP! NATHAN YOU FUCKING-"
"Bye guys", Nathan says and waves at us. Then he runs out the front door waddling and waving his hands like a penguin. "STOP THE HORN ALI! I'M COMING!"
