Kaida

I woke to find myself in a soft bed. Sleepily I smiled, before opening my eyes and taking in the scene. Everything was snow white, from the floor to the ceiling; even my sheets were like a thick blanket of comforting snow. I sighed. I’d landed myself in the hospital room – great!

“Miss Elkins dear, how are you feeling?” a warm hand pressed onto my forehead, bringing with it a dull thumping and the queasy smell of illness and disease.

“I’m fine thanks,” I replied, although I felt (and probably looked) like utter crap.  The Maiden searched my eyes before finally nodding her head and moving away.

Good, I thought before sliding out from the bed covers as relief swept over me, they had left me in my normal clothes instead of changing me into those disgusting hospital gowns that leave nothing to the imagination. I made my way to the end of twelve rows of white beds and up to the receptionist who sat at a white desk and tapped aimlessly at the computer screen in front of her.

“Yes.” Her blunt voice startled me.

“I’d like to sign-” a scream echoed down the corridor from a bed enclosed by a cream curtain, but the receptionist barely glanced up. I stood there, trembling – I recognized that scream!

Without a second thought I scurried towards the scream and crouched down so that I was hidden from any prying eyes. A small gap revealed itself in the curtains and I put my eye to it. My heart dropped. The little boy I had seen the previous night lay on a once white sheet now stained with his blood. Tears streamed down his cheeks and fell. My eyes bore into the three Maidens that stood over him, and could tell by the sadness in their eyes that he wasn’t going to make it. His small hand lay untouched on the cover as small whimpers escaped his lips. Before I could stop myself, I lurched forward and took his hand in mine.

The Maidens gave me confused looks, “Miss Elkins, you are not permitted to-” I cut her off with a wave of my hand and they backed off.

The boys big, baby-blue eyes found mine, “Who are y-you?”

“I’m Kaida,” I whispered, stroking his hair, “Who are you?”

“Feda,” his eyes were like glowing orbs, beautiful and full of life, “Will you sing to me?”

The question threw me slightly.

 Sing to him?

I knew few songs that my mother used to sing to me, so I selected one at random, hoping it would soothe him. I pulled up a chair next to his bed and reattached my hand with his and began:

Close your eyes and smile my sweet,

the sun is fading tonight.

Remember the songs we used to sing,

as we danced the night away.

But none of that matters now we’re together,

our hearts beating as one.

I’ll stay with you till the end of time,

just promise you’ll never let me go.

A smile appeared on Feda’s lips and he gripped my hand tightly, “You sing like my mamma.”

“Thank you,” I said as tears ran from my eyes and my lips began to tremble. I repeated the verse, stroking his hair as I sang but I knew it wouldn’t be long. Feda drew in a long shaky breath.

“Tell, tell my mamma that I love her,” he whispered, “Promise?”

I looked into those blue eyes, full of such hope and happiness – it broke my heart.

“Promise,” I told him, as his grip loosened and the light left his eyes.

I looked into the tear streaked face of the child and wept.

“Come on, let’s get you out of here,” a strong arm lifted me up and carried me away, but I didn’t care to open my eyes, in fear that I’d see those now lifeless blue eyes staring at me – vacant yet beautiful.

I knew that the hospital lay below ground but if we emerged into the crisp morning air I did not feel it.

I felt the pounding of feet upstairs, but still my eyes remained closed. Softly, I was lowered onto (what I assume) was a bed, only then did I have the courage to slowly lift my eyelids.

It was only then that I realized it must be late evening as the sky outside the window was darkening. I sat up in the bed and searched the room; my face stiff from tears and a muzzy feeling replaced the thumping in my head.

Wait, this is James’s room, he must have known that I had blacked-out and come to look after me. I smiled at the thought, James was sweet and had a bad-assed attitude but it was not like him to be a gentlemen.

“Maybe he’s changed,” I thought aloud.

A burst of light erupted from the doorway as a shadow slunk into the room, carrying a tray piled with food and set it down by my bed before pulling up a chair next to me.

I recoiled slightly – it was Emery.

“What are you doing here?” I asked trying to be as blunt as I could although my heart was beating out of my chest.

I wanted to hold him, feel his lips press against mine.

No Kaida, my head told me, you don’t love him.

But you’re meant for each other, the mark tells you so, my heart pleaded with me.

What should I do, listen to my head or my heart?
