Johnny POV
When I opened the door. Kenzie's eyes were bright. Full of excitement or anxiety. I couldn't tell the difference.
"Hey." She said in a calm tone but her hands were fiddling at the side.
"Hey. My dads not here yet." I was filled with shame. What person invites you over for dinner and isn't even there.
"Can I get a tour of your house?" She said. Her eyes were curious. I wanted to say no. But I couldn't. Not to her.
"Follow me"
I led her around the house. Before, she got here I tried to hide all of my fathers stuff. I tried to clean the house of his aura.
When we reached my room. I opened the door and held my breath. Wondering what she would think about it.
My room was clean for a teenage boys. The walls were white and only a few things littered the floor.
She actually looked surprised.
"Hey I'm not a total slob." I say in defense. She laughs. I wish every day could be like this for us. Laughing, playing around, not hating each other...
"So, where's your dad?" Her voice was curious and I didn't blame her.
"I honestly don't know. I'm really sorry."
"Hey, its fine. I'm just pissed at Brandon."
"Yeah, I'm gonna crush him the next time I see him."
"And about that night-" She was interrupted by the slam of the front door. I cringe.
Please don't be my drunk dad.
Please don't be my high dad.
Just please don't be mad.
I pray silently as Kenzie's eyes widen.
"Johnny?!" My father yells.
"I'm in my room"
"Come here!"
I turn towards Kenz. My heart was beating fast and my eyes were wide. This was the moment. The moment that Kenzie, the girl that I hate will see my darkest secret. She notices my worry and steps closer to me. I smile and take her hand before moving out the door towards Satan.
Mackenzie POV
Johnny was being... nice. Like not a total jerk. To be honest it surprised me more than it should've. And his room. It was cleaner then mine.
When his father came home he looked scared and I couldn't help but remember his words on the night of the party. The night he was drunk out of his mind.
After I catch my breath, I look around the garden. It was empty except for a shadow on a bench. I walk closer and see that the person is Johnny? Great, this is not my night. I guess he heard my footsteps because he looked up at me. I could smell his breath. Alcohol. I thought as he said "Mackenzie?." He stood up and grabbed my hand beckoning me to the bench. He started talking "I think, I think my life is going downhill. He's coming for me. When he gets back he's going to kill me while my mother watches. I just want him to stop to stop the constant pain." He keeps mumbling a bunch of words as I sit their. I set my hand on his shoulder and ask " Who's hurting you?" My question seems to snap him out of his thoughts because he immediately moves his shoulder and stands up saying "I'm just joking" he gives me a pained smile that was fake. I shake my head. Why won't he just tell me the truth. I stare into his eyes and say "Johnny, it's okay" I see tears form in his eyes but they never fall. He shakes his head and turns away. I could see him thinking. The next thing I know, he's gone and I can make out a figure running away in the distance.
The girl who gets not enough attention and the boy who gets to much.
