Chapter 1 :D
"Kiara! Where are you? We have to be at the church in ten minutes! Your brother and father are already there!"
"Ok, Ok, I'm coming! Mom, why do I even have to go, I didn't even know Uncle Hugh!" I shouted from upstairs.
I'm usually a very respectful obedient girl, but today was just not my day. I had to wake up early on a cold October day,
get all dressed up and was missing breakfast all for a man that was dead. That may sound really mean, but hey! I'm sixteen,
I need my sleep!
From the silence I could tell she was getting restless so I just grabbed my cardigan, a pair of earrings, and headed downstairs.
MOm looked up from her blackberry and answered my question "Because he was family and your father was very close to him so NO complaints, alright? You're not the only one suffering here. That man never liked me so why should I have to go celebrate his life with an hour and a half ceremony?
My answere for you is we all goota support one another.."
Oh no. Mom was going into one of her rants again. As much as I would love to miss this funeral...
"Mom", stopping her mid-sentence, "you're so right. We have to be there for Dad, for support, for companionship because we are a family."
My mom looked a bit bewildered but then nodded her head. "that's right, now let's get to the church."
As we walked outside and off the front porch, what met our eyes was not a pretty sight. It's been the same weather for the past four days- lots and lots of rain with no stops. Something really bad must of happened upstairs, if you know what I'm saying.
Mom and I just looked at eachother, knowing we'd have to make a run for it to the car.
"One."
"Two."
"Three!"
We both scurried as best we could to open the door, jump inside, and slam it behind us. We both were breathing pretty heavy even though the front door was only maybe twenty feet away. With raindrops trinkling down our faces and hair that would soon be un-tamable with frizziness, Mom started the car and we began to drive. In my hurry to get out the door and be ready for the funeral and just my own pure clumsiness, my elbow accidentally pushed down on the button that brought down the car window, making my hand slip dropping one of the earrings out the window into the street. 'Shoot' I thought as I brought the window up.
Ma had her window wipers working double-time to see through the rain, but she missed one SMALL important detail. That's when someone on a bike crashed into our car.
The reason why this happened is more intricate than you would first think. I found all this information out later so i should start at the very first event to let one understand.
-On the North Carolina coast, a hurricane passed them by a hair, leaving a lot of weather issues like bad storms. The winds there moved that bad weather west to Chicago where I live and that explains the bad weather.
-What an onlooker probably wouldn't have known was that Uncle Hugh had an eye condition called glaucoma. The thing was he didn't even know he had it. All he knew was that he was going blind so he set up an appointment with his eye doctor.
-Well, the eye doctor had to reschedule because he was visiting relatives in Virginia. The day he was supposed to leave they shut down all the airports because of a hurricane scare. When Uncle Hugh found out they would have to reschedule the appointment he was fine with it, he could wait a couple of days.
-What he didn't expect to happen was that his electricity would go out because of storms and his back-up generator wouldn't kick in. He went downstairs where his generator was to see what was the matter. Because of his bad eye sight he ended up electrocuting himself to death hence why we were going to the funeral.
-This person we had just collided with, worked for an electrition.
-He was riding a bike because his father was using the car to get to an old friend's uncle's funeral that day.
-This person was out at all because he was on his way to go collect an old man's back up generator for the elctrition to repair and resell to other people who found out their generators weren't working because of the storm.
-He didn't see us because he was looking at his back tire that was slowly deflating because of a small sharp shiny pin-like object that had just recently fallen into the street.
If any of these events hadn't happened, the crash never would have occurred. Makes someone think that maybe there are no coincidences, doesn't it?
-Back to he present-
MOM slammed on the brakes, right there in the middle of the road and we both rushed out of the car, into the pouring rain, looking at the unconscious body that now lay sprawled on the asphalt.
Mom said, "I'm going to go call an ambulance, you check on him to make sure he's OK." I nodded.
Some scratches covered his face and he had a cut on his arm from sliding on it, but other than that he was gorgeous. He had black
hair, strong features, and had an almost pale mocha coloring about him. There was definitely some Spanish heritage in there, I thought. I
mentally slapped myself then, you should not be checking him out at a time like this.
First things first, check his heartbeat. I kneeled next to him and took a big breath, then pushed my hair behind
my ear and placed my ear on his chest. It took a second, but there was a steady heartbeat
in there. Now I needed to check if he was breathing. I don't know why but I felt slightly embarrassed as I leaned my ear close to his mouth. It's not like I was trying to make a move on him or something, but that didn't stop me from blushing as I felt his warm breath on my ear. Dang my teenage hormones- can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.
As I got up to get his bike out of the road, one of my heels broke, making me trip because of the change in balance. I ended up ripping my tights and falling on him. Opening my eyes after i fell, I found my face right near his neck- My cheeks went totally red then for the second time in the past 15 minutes. I had only known this guy for maybe half an hour and already he was making me flush like a little girl!
"Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I don't know-" Then I stopped, he couldn't hear me, he was in la-la land. He would feel it when he woke up, yes, but he wouldn't know I did it! Sometimes I am just so stupid.
i got up off of him and stood up awkwardly on one heel, but then just took my shoes off. My whole outfit was already ruined from all the rain, kneeling on the road, and then some of his blood from his cuts had somehow managed to end up on my white-and-black dress- going barefoot wouldn't ruin the 'look', it already looked like it had been washed up from Lake Michigan.
Having no other company than this ridiculous unconscious boy, yes I think about these events and find him totally and utterly and crazily ridiculous- Come on!! Who rides their bike in the middle of a terrential downpour? Who, I'll tell you who- crazy ridiculous boys!, I started to move him off the street. It took awhile, not gonna lie, he's like over six feet, but I tried with all my might and pushed/dragged him over by the curb. The only thing i could do after that was wait so I sat on the curb next to him, put my elbows on my knees, and my head in my hands, and we both waited on that cold rainy October morning.
Who would've thought I would spend my day like this?

Do we like it, do we hate it? :P
