Louis’ P.O.V
I open my eyes just to immediately close them again, the sun is way too bright and I can’t understand why someone would decide to sleep here, not only is it sunny but it’s wet as well. Wait...what?
I open my eyes again and sit up, looking around. I’m on a beach, a beautiful beach with white sand and seashells and everything, and someone is laying next to me with his back towards me. That’s when I remember what happened, how the plane started losing height and how it hit the water, how me and Calum managed to get out in time. I don’t remember anything about how we got here though.
“Calum?” I shake him slightly but he doesn’t wake up. “Calum?” Oh please god don’t be dead!
“What? What’s going...on?” He asks as he sits up. “How did we end up here?” I stand up without answering him and start walking away from the water. “Louis? Did we really make it?” He asks and I can hear him running to catch up with me. ”Is there anyone else? There has to be right? We can’t be the only ones who survived.” I turn around, catching him by surprise because he doesn’t stop in time, causing him to bump into me.
“I woke up a few seconds before you did, I left the plane at the same time as you and we were washed up at the same place, how the fuck do you expect me to know all that?” I ask, louder than I meant to. He doesn’t answer, he just stands there looking down at me with big, scared eyes. I didn’t realise he’s taller than me until now but I’m too pissed off to care. Instead of waiting for an answer I turn around again and continue walking away from where we first woke up.
I walk for hours with Calum a few meters behind me, none of us saying a word, and I can feel the anger slowly being replaced by guilt. Just as I start considering apologizing to him I feel something tug on my shirt and when I turn around he’s standing there with tears rolling down his cheeks.
“I’m sorry Lou.” He whispers before wrapping his arms around my waist and hiding his face in the crook of my neck. “I’m just so scared and I don’t want you to be mad at me and I don’t want to be alone. I’m sorry.” I don’t know what to say, the apology I had prepared is completely forgotten and I just stand there holding him as he cries into my shoulder.
“Hey!” The voice coming from somewhere behind me breaks us apart and I turn around to face whoever this person is, making sure I stay between him and Calum, just incase. The person, a boy around Calum’s age would be my guess, runs over to us and stops, resting his hands on his knees as he tries to catch his breath.
“Who are you?” Calum moves closer to the stranger and my brotherly instincts kicks in, making me hold an arm out to stop him from getting any closer, ignoring the confused looks I get from him.
“Who are you?” I ask, repeating Calum’s question.
“I’m Ashton, 37B. I was sitting a few rows in front of you two, to the left.” I take a closer look at him before turning to Calum, who just shrugs. I don’t remember seeing this guy before, but then again I never remember what I had for breakfast and it was a lot of people on the plane, not to mention the fact that I was kinda busy trying to stay alive to really care about anything else.
“I’m Louis.” I tell him after a few moments of awkward silence. “This is Calum.” Ashton nods and smiles, showing off dimples that makes me think of the beautiful flight attendant. Did he make it off the plane? is he here on the island? And what about that young girl he was with, did she make it?
“Well then, it’s nice to meet both of you but how about we keep moving? Maybe we’ll find someone else.” I nod, already liking this Ashton character, he seems like the kind of guy who gets things done.
“There’s nothing back that way.” Calum tells him, pointing in the direction we came from. “We’ve been walking for hours.” Ashton nods and starts walking back the way he came and both me and Calum walks up to him, me ending up in the middle with one of them on each side.
“I only just managed to get to shore, i got caught in a current.” Ashton tells us, looking out at the ocean. I don’t know what to say about that, I’m not even sure he wants me to say something, and Calum stays quiet as well.
We walk for a couple more hours, not really saying much more than an occasional “look over there”, before agreeing on taking a break. The sun is already setting and the temperature is dropping so we’ll need some time to collect some firewood and possibly get a fire started. Personally I don’t know anything about stuff like that but Ashton mentioned something about being in the boy scouts and Calum seems to know a thing or two as well so I take it upon myself to find a good spot for our fire while the collect the wood. Once I’ve found one I sit down in the sand and wrap my arms around my legs, resting my chin on my knees. It’s crazy how much my life changed in a matter of hours. When I left home looking for an adventure I never imagined this happening, not to me.
“Hi Lou.” Calum sits down next to me, leaving Ashton to get the fire started, and I look up at him, smiling softly.
“Hi Cal, how’d it go?”
“Good.” He moves closer to me and rests his head on my shoulder and then we just sit there looking out on the ocean and listening to Ashton muttering swear words as he tries to get the fire going. It’s nice though, I don’t feel the need to say something just to hear my own voice, and I’m incredibly happy I’m not alone here.
“Got it!” Ashton exclaims about an hour later. It’s now almost completely dark and we can no longer see the ocean even though it’s just a few hundred meters away. I stand up and brush the sand off my jeans before walking over to Ashton, who’s trying to feed the fire without accidentally putting it out again. I sit down on the other side of the fire and Calum joins me shortly after and we watch as Ashton manages to make the fire bigger. Once he's satisfied with his work he looks over at us and it's obvious he's very proud of himself. "Well goodnight then guys, guess I'll see you tomorrow" he lays down with his back towards the fire and after a few minutes he starts snoring. I look over at Calum, half expecting him to have fallen asleep as well, but he’s still sitting up, staring into the flames.
“You know I used to dream about this.” He says after a while. “I used to dream about being stranded on a desert island, with a very beautiful girl of course. I thought it’d be a cool adventure, that I’d be like the pirates in those movies. But it’s nothing like that, it’s scary. It’s so fucking scary Lou, we don’t even know it we’re going to get home alive, we don’t even know if they’re looking for us!” His voice gets louder at the end and Ashton stirs in his sleep.
“I know.” I say as I put my arm around Calum’s shoulders. “I know, I’m scared too.” For a second I think he’s going to cry again but he doesn’t, instead he just goes back to staring at the flames. “We’ll be alright Cal. They’ll come looking for us soon and we’ll get to go home, and until then we’ll be fine. I think I saw some fruit when we were walking earlier and there’s freshwater and we can fish and...it’ll be alright, we’ll be home again in no time.” He rests his head on my shoulder again and none of us say something for a while. “Let’s go to sleep now yeah? We’ll probably feel better tomorrow.” He nods and lays down next to the fire and I put some more sticks on it, not wanting it to die just yet, before laying down next to him and closing my eyes.
Niall’s P.O.V
I watch how the waves come crashing in on the beach as I wait for Luke to come back. We managed to get away from the plane yesterday, although i’m still not sure how that happened, and after spending the night on the beach almost freezing to death we decided to walk, hoping to find other survivors.
“God that felt so weird, not having any paper!” Luke tells me when he comes back. He walks down to the water to wash his hands before running back up to me and helping me up. “You know it’s kinda cool really, how we adjust to new things so quickly. Like when you’re sleeping, let’s say you have four pillows normally and then someone takes one of them away. The first night it feels really really weird because you’re so used to sleeping with four pillows but the night after that you’re totally fine with just three and after a while when you get your missing pillow back it just feels weird sleeping with four pillows again.” I stare at him in confusion for a few seconds before realising he’s still talking about the fact that there’s no toiletpaper here.
“uh yeah...I guess you’re right.” He seems satisfied with that answer because he starts walking along the beach. I try to come up with something to say as we’re walking but I can’t think of anything that isn’t very depressing.
“You know I really don’t think we’re alone here.” Luke tells me after a while. “I mean right before we went down I heard this man tell the one next to him not to put his seatbelt on and they were ahead of us when we left the plane, I think they made it and if we just keep walking we should meet them, I mean this is probably an island and they should stay close to the water because if someone shows up and they’re out in the jungle people can’t see them and they probably know that so we should meet them sooner or later.”
“Luke.” He looks over at me with his mouth slightly open, ready to continue talking. “You’re rambling.” He closes his mouth and turns away from me and maybe, maybe I should have let him go on, maybe he’s just trying to get his mind off things by saying everything he thinks of out loud, just like me constantly snapping my fingers when I’m nervous. “Luke I’m so-” Before I get a chance to apologize he puts his hand over my mouth, silencing me. I’m just about to lick his hand when he slowly lowers it again.
“Did you hear that?” He asks me and I shake my head, but then I hear something, something that sounds like a baby crying. But it can’t be right? How would a baby end up here? “Was that a baby?” Apparently I did actually hear that, because Luke did too. Are we both going crazy? I nod and he takes my hand, pulling me towards the sound.
“Shhh….please baby girl don’t cry.” I stop walking as soon as I hear the other voice and pull Luke with me, hiding behind a tree. There’s something familiar with this new voice, although I can’t place it. “I don’t know what to do Lily, I don’t know how to make you happy. I know you miss mummy but I’m all I have right now, shhh please stop crying.” Before I can stop him Luke steps out from our hiding place and keeps walking.
“Luke!” I chase after him, but by the time I catch up with him we’ve been discovered and we’re suddenly standing face to face with a young man who’s holding a crying toddler in his arms. The girl lifts her head from his shoulder when she hears us and for a few seconds we’re just staring at each other, all four of us.
“You’re….you were on the plane.” Luke breaks the silence, his words sounding more like a question than a statement, and the man nods. “You were the flight attendant that talked right before takeoff.” The man nods again.
“I’m Harry.” he tells us. “This is Lily.” The girl in his arms are still watching us. more specifically Luke, but she stopped crying so I guess that’s something.
“I’m Niall, this is Luke.” Harry puts Lily down in the sand and we watch as she walks over to Luke, wrapping her arms around his leg. He looks over at Harry, unsure of what to do.
After talking for half an hour we decided that we were going to stick together and keep walking in the same direction as me and Luke were. We have been walking all day now, only taking a few breaks to eat some fruit and drink, and Luke has been carrying Lily on his shoulders the whole time, leaving me and Harry to talk.
“Tired!” Lily suddenly exclaims as she pulls Luke’s hair to get him to turn around to face us.
“Yes, tired!” Luke says, lifting her off his shoulders and laying down in the sand. “I say we stay here tonight.” They get as they want and Harry leaves to collect some fruit for us while me and Luke tries to find a spot on the beach where we won’t be bothered by the wind or the tides. When we do, he immediately runs off to play with Lily and I sit down next to our jackets. Harry returns five minutes later and puts the fruit down on the jackets before sitting down next to me.
“I thought we were alone here.” He tells me. “I didn’t know what to do and she wouldn’t stop crying.” We sit in silence for a while, watching Luke and Lily play down by the water. “He’s really good with her.”
A few hours later both Lily and Luke are sound asleep next to me, cuddled up together with our jackets on top of them as some kind of blanket. Harry left to take a wee a few minutes ago and I’m the only one awake, but I don’t mind. I haven’t had a chance to be alone like this since I left home a week ago and even though it’s here, at this island where anything could happen, it’s relaxing. It’s nice to finally get a chance to just exist for a while, without having to worry about things I have to do.
“Niall! you have come here!” Harry’s voice makes me jump slightly but I get on my feet as quickly as possible and run through the jungle to where Harry’s voice came from. I try my best to avoid tripping over something as I’m running, and the change in scenery shocks me. Two seconds ago I was running through the jungle and now I’m standing on the beach again, about five hundred meters from where I left Luke and Lily. Harry is standing next to me, staring off into the distance, and when I follow his gaze I see it. A campfire.
