Years pass and Jade still finds it difficult to live without her mother, but knowing that her mother's spirit lives in her house made Jade feel more at ease. Jade (who is now 15 years old) grew wiser and stronger everyday. Her father taught her how to "defend herself." Jade learned how to use a blaster and a bow and arrow. She was a quick learner and adapted to these new combat skills pretty easily. He would teach her something new everyday. This wasn't because he was wise, but because he was a soldier who worked for King Han and Queen Leia. Jade would look forward to train with her father everyday. Until one day, Jade's father got called in to fight in the battle between the Resistance and the First Order.
"Jade!!!!" her father called. "Yes father?" said Jade. "I have to go. The king has called me in to go fight for the Resistance in the war." said her father. "What about my training?" said Jade in despair. "Not today, darling. When I come back, I'll teach you a brand new fighting style. I promise. For now, I have someone that I would like you to meet. Jade, this is Maz Kanata, she's going to be helping us out around the house and more importantly, she's going to watch you while I'm gone." her father said. Jade looked down at the small orange lady before saying, "It's very nice to meet you, Maz." "It's nice to meet you too, child" said Maz with a smile on her face. "I have to go now. Be good now, Jade. I'll be back in two weeks. I promise" said her father hugging his daughter goodbye. "Goodbye" said Jade as her father waved back and walked out of the door.
"Your father has told me a lot about you" said Maz. "You know my father?" Jade questioned. "Oh yeah, we've known each other for years, we used to work together at palace" said Maz. "What did you do?" Jade said. Maz answered "Well before I worked at the palace, I was a space pirate, a smuggler just like King Han, well before he became king. I was then appointed by Han to work as a royal secretary because he trusted me, but with the war going on now, my services aren't needed and when your father told me about you, I couldn't pass out on the opportunity." Jade was curious "What did my father say about me?" "He told me that you are just like your mother and you certainly do look like her. Also, that you're father is training you and your doing very well. You are extremely talented, Jade" said Maz.
"Thank you, Maz. I wanted to ask you if can teach me anything, well at least something that my father hasn't taught me yet" Jade asked. Maz asked Jade "Have you heard of the Jedi?" "No I haven't, what are they" asked Jade. "They are users of the force. They are warriors that are trained to guard peace and justice in the universe" said Maz. "Are you a Jedi?" asked Jade. "I am no Jedi, but I know the force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing" said Maz. Jade asked "Do you think I could become a Jedi?" "I think you could, you just need practice and patience" said Maz. In the end, Jade and Maz got to know each other very well and the two of them became really good friends.
