What did he want to do in life? He stood amongst the tallest building in Ikebukuro, watching the ant like humans walk along the busy streets. The cars racing around, the sky lit a beautiful shade of navy.
He sat down close to the edge of the building, taking his cigarette out of mouth and puffed out some smoke. The city was lit with dozens of coloured lights, something Shizuo definitely couldn't describe. He put his sunglasses in his shirt pocket and leaned back, gazing at the stars above.
He wanted a quiet, peaceful life. Something you couldn't exactly get in Ikebukuro, it didn't matter anyway, he was a monster. He hates violence, but whenever he was angry, he would always destroy. And before he knew it, he had hurt someone.
How can he put it? He... simply didn't know. It was a curse. A simple one. But one he couldn't get the control of. Why? He cursed himself, his life, his entire existence. Why did he exist? He couldn't do the things he wanted, have the life he could've gotten. He put his hand in front of the stars.
Maybe it was better if he didn't exist.
He shook his head. No. He had to live. But for what purpose? This he drew a blank on. His family, his brother, his friends?
He was s simpleton. Been told numerous times that. He wished he knew what he wanted.
"Shizu-chan! What are you doing here?" A voice of a very familiar Orihara Izaya came to his ears.
He heard footsteps, closer and closer, yet he couldn't find the strength to move, let alone fight.
"I'm not in a mood to fight right now. I call a truce." He called out.
"Truce? Truce? Hey! Since when do you make the rules!" Izaya yelled.
"Since always." Shizuo stood up. Izaya already ruined the mood, he walked by Izaya, relighting another cigarette. Izaya clenched his fists, he turned around and tackled Shizuo to the ground, Izaya's pocket knife right next to Shizuo's neck.
"What if I slit open your neck?" Izaya smirked. Shizuo just slapped Izaya's knife out of his hand. And while Izaya was in shock, Shizuo got up and attempted leaving again.
"Try harder next time, your stance is full of openings."
"Damn you Shizu-chan! I...I..." Izaya fell to his knees. He felt defeated.
"You're the only thing I have left..." His voice was frail and hoarse, tears dripping down from his eyes while he desperately wiped them away. This was a side of Izaya Shizuo has never seen before.
Shizuo stood there, watching Izaya silently sob. He wanted to say something to comfort him, but emotional support wasn't exactly Shizuo's strong suit.
Izaya stood up and rushed to the exit before looking at Shizuo. And with that, he was gone.
What was he doing? Izaya went down the stairs as fast as he could, seeing the brute again was the last thing he wanted. He confessed his true feelings. His feelings for Shizuo.
What a joke.
The next few days were peaceful. Shizuo wasn't being targeted by the Yakuza for things he hadn't done, nor was he set up to be arrested. Things were serious now. Usually Izaya is constantly on his tail, setting him up to be beaten, anything to piss him off. But nothing's happened. And Shizuo was confused.
Was it because of that day?
"You're the only thing I have left..." He remembered what Izaya said. He clenched his fist, remembering that damn flea's voice was annoying.
He slowly released his fist, and gazed at the sky. He supposed, he never finished his train of thought up there. It was Izaya that disturbed his session. What did he want to do in life.
Shizuo had been Tom's bodyguard, but that was the only job he was good at. Other than being a bartender, guess who got him fired. But that was only to earn money. It's strange really, how people say life is a string of miracles, how everything happens for a reason, but everything had been a curse for Shizuo.
He felt kind of...hollow. Besides from being Tom's bodyguard, he does nothing. Everyday was on loop, like he was a hamster on hamster wheel, running and running. But he never got anywhere. Then Izaya flashed his mind. When he was chasing him, he felt happy. It was something he couldn't describe.
He sighed and scratched his head. All that thinking made his head hurt.
"Shizuo, are you okay?" Tom suddenly asked.
"Me? Yeah, of course. Why are you asking?" That caught him off guard. Guess it was obvious he was frustrated.
"You seem out of it... I'd say for a couple days now. Is everything really okay?" Tom asked again.
"Yeah. Couldn't sleep well for a couple days."
"Oh. Guess I'm just thinking too much."
While they walked to their next client, they saw a familiar purple haired girl. Akane. Her face immediately lit up and she yanked away from her bodyguard to immediately hug Shizuo's legs.
"Woah Akane-chan. You miss me?" Shizuo patted the young girl's head. She nodded with a big smile on her face.
"Guess what Shizuo big brother? Izaya big brother said you weren't going to kill my father and Grandfather again! That means I don't have to kill you!" She cheerily said, looking up to Shizuo with an innocent look.
"You're still thinking about that?" Shizuo said while ruffling the girl's hair. He was still kind of pissed by the metion of Izaya's name, but by how bubbly Akane looked, there was no way he could get mad in front of her.
"Okay, how about I treat you some ice cream!" The little girl cheered as Shizuo walked off with her on her shoulders to the nearest ice cream shop.
"Oi Shizuo! What about... nevermind."
Shizuo watched as Akane happily munched on her ice cream while eating his.
"Shizuo big brother?" Akane asked, looking up from her ice cream.
"What is it?"
"Izaya big brother's been acting strange. He's been really sad and I'm worried."
Izaya? Of all people he's sad? Maybe he hit his head.
"He's okay. I'm sure. Maybe he just needs some space." Shizuo assured the young child.
"Can you go talk to him?" Shizuo's instant reaction was to say no to anything that didn't involve him smashing his face into concrete, but if she's so worried...
He sighed. Indeed, the flea is definitely acting weird. Unless he's plotting something again. He could just use this as an excuse to check on him.
"Okay."
"You have to be nice too! Izaya big brother told me you were mean to him!"
"Yes madam." Shizuo said on paper, though he wasn't sure if he could keep that promise. That flea's face was too damn punchable.
Suddenly, Akane got up from his seat and placed her palm on Shizuo's head.
"Do you swear?"
Akane immediately did another heart-warming smile, and that was super effective against Shizuo's heart.
"I swear."
After his talk with Akane, Shizuo went a hunt to find Izaya. He felt strangely protective of him, scared if anything happened to him.
His heart was beating fast...
He was blushing...
Was he in love? As a person, Shizuo is completely clueless
After a couple yells of Izaya and asking some street thugs. He managed to pin point his location.
Izaya was in an alleyway. He was curled up like a ball, his knees crunched up his chin. His head buried deep in his knees.
"IIIIZZZZAAAYYYYAAAA!!!" Shizuo yelled. Izaya tiredly looked at Shizuo and sighed. His eyes were bloodshot, nose was red, he had been crying. Bags under his eyes clearly visible, like he barely slept.
A guy like that? Izaya? Crying?
Shizuo almost felt sympathetic. He walked over, and crouched next to Izaya. Izaya tensed at how physically close Shizuo is without murderous intent.
"Tell me what's going on." Shizuo said.
Izaya looked at Shizuo with disbelief, as if he told Izaya he believed the earth was flat.
"You tell me, what are you doing? Aren't you going to kill me?" Izaya questioned.
Shizuo calmly took out a box of cigarettes and put one in his mouth. He then took a lighter and lit the cigarette, blowing out some smoke. Izaya coughed a little, waving his hand to fan away the smoke, his eyes tearing up a little.
"You don't like it? Sorry." Shizuo put the cigarette under his shoe and stomped it out.
"Hey you muscle gorilla! Why are you so nice to me?" Izaya narrowed his eyes, suspicious of Shizuo's actions. It had to be a trap, that idiot doesn't know compassion!
"It's Akane-chan's orders. I swore to her I'd be nice. So, tell me."
"I've got nothing to say." Izaya pouted placing his head on his arms.
"What about when you said I was the only thing you have left?" The tip of Izaya's ears went bright red, along with his face. He burrowed his burning face deeper in his arms, just the sight of Shizuo made him want to go dig himself a hole and die in it.
"It's nothing... someone like you wouldn't understand." Izaya muttered.
"I'm not that stupid."
Shizuo leaned his head back and looked at the gray sky.
"I'll start first."
"Recently, I feel hollow. It's like, my life has suddenly lost my purpose. I can't describe it, but it's as if my life's lost it colour, and I have no idea what to do. Actually, my life feels like that most of the time.
But then we meet in high school. At first, I had nothing but pure hatred. I feel I exist only to hunt you down and skin you alive."
"That's mean, Shizu-chan!"
Shizuo felt a vein pop, but he took a deep breath and calmed himself. This is for Akane!
"Anyway. I'm saying is, maybe this cat and mouse relationship is more than it looks. Chasing you...is kind of fun. It distracted me, and the days you didn't send the entire world against me made me realise that. It...it was boring not with you not chasing you around.
And...I think, maybe if we weren't on each other's tails, we could maybe be friends, and perhaps more... that's all I'm saying. I still hate you, but we could get to know each other better." Shizuo admitted.
This made Izaya feel a lot more at ease. Even if everything Shizuo said could be bullcrap, the fact he said it out loud, meant it was genuine. Izaya lifted his head and rested it on his arms.
"Did you just confess to me?" Izaya tilted his head and looked at Shizuo.
This time, Shizuo's face went bright red. While he tried to causally hide it, he was one hundred percent embarrassed. Everything he said, was true.
"Well do you?" Shizuo looked directly at Izaya.
"Do I...I what?" Izaya stuttered, blushing once again.
"Love me?"
There was a long, awkward silence. An atmosphere so thick you could cut it. They both started at each other, both waiting for a reaction from either.
This was the moment. This was it. The perfect opportunity.
Izaya leaned in, and kissed Shizuo right on the lips.
"Does this answer your question?" Izaya said after pulling away. Shizuo was completely red, and he didn't move.
"Hello? Anyone in there?" Izaya waved his hand in front of Shizuo, who was frozen.
Suddenly, Shizuo pulled in Izaya with his arms and kissed him again, for much longer. Izaya's lips were soft and sweet,
and Shizuo couldn't get enough of it. He pulled away and looked dreamily into Izaya's eyes.
"Yea."
After cuddling together and a few more confessions, Shizuo picked Izaya up bridal style, who didn't complain.
"Hey, you still haven't answered my question. Why did you say I was the only thing you have left?"
"I was lonely. I had no friends. I tried to invite Namie to a hot pot party, but she refused. You, were the only thing I had. And I developed feelings. Humans, were a distraction. And..." Izaya said quietly.
There was a long pause.
"And?" Shizuo looked down, and saw Izaya asleep, his head nuzzled against Shizuo's neck. He smiled.
"You're hopeless." Shizuo kissed Izaya on the forehead and continued walking.
The monster of Ikebukuro and the information broker of Ikebukuro had become one.
