I have never understood the obsession with three.
The main girl and her two best friends, the main guy and his two best friends and the love triangle...but what bothers me more is how the groups date.
The main girl and guy start dating and their friends are 'forced' to all sit together and hang out together, and not long after the friends are left dating each other.
No no no.
It is possible for another pair of the friends to fall in love, but the probability of it happening every time is next to nothing and honestly, so is getting along with your boyfriend or girlfriend's friends.
I've experienced that your friends usually differ so much that they don't like each other and that's okay. Just because you're dating someone's bwst friend, it doesn't mean that your lives now have to merge.
Why not have their friends hate each other or better yet, just not care about each other.
They can be civil if they happen to be in the same space, but they don't have to be friends and they DEFINITELY don't have to date.
