5. Avoiding Meetings
A week. It had been a week since she last saw Aaron. She had done her best to avoid him, to avoid the sort of ‘history’ drama that only happened last week. Just then, the doorbell rang.
Jade dropped the magazine and walked over to the door. “Hi, delivery.” A bald man in a grey vest top said, handing her a box. It was medium size and easy to carry. The man started walking down her drive without handing her any papers.
“Um...excuse me! Who was this from?” she said. The bald man turned back and shrugged.
“Dunno love, didn’t come with any papers. Better open and see,” he said giving her a wink before getting in his tattered van and driving off.
She took the box inside and placed it on the kitchen table. There were no stamps or stickers on it. No notes from where it was from. She stripped the tape off the top and opened the cardboard flaps.
Inside was a lilac dress wrapped neatly in white tissue paper. Jade took out the dress and examined it at arm’s length. Knee-length, spaghetti straps, ruffled bodice. It was gorgeous. With the dress still in her arms, she bent over the box and took out some lilac high heels with sparkly gems on the straps.
Must be from dad, she thought. He must be getting married. Under the remaining tissue paper, there was an envelope with Jade written on it. Not her dad’s handwriting. She slipped her thumb under the flap and eased it open.
The cream paper inside read:
Dear Jade, I knew you’d like it. My sisters, Jeremy and I are going to a meal tonight. Carolynn insisted in getting you the dress and the shoes. It’s going to be a bit posh; my mother’s friends are the host. The restaurant is at the end of Terral road in town but there’s enough room in the car, if you want to travel with us. Be ready at around 7. Don’t pay us back, the dress is a gift. Aaron F.
Jade’s mouth had dropped open and she had to hold the chair for support. Aaron Fisher asking her to a meal? After a week of not even trying to talk to her?
Jade stuffed the shoes and the dress back inside the box along with the note. She will not give in and go to a meal with Aaron and his family.
She carried the box and went out to Aaron’s garden. The blue Peugeot wasn’t there but she still knocked. No answer, what a surprise! She dropped the box onto their doorstep and walked away. She heard the door opening.
“Jade.” A voice that belonged to Aaron said. Jade turned around.
“What?” she said. Aaron picked up the box and walked over to her. “I don’t want it and I can’t come tonight.”
“Why not?” he said.
“My mum said so, ok?” Jade said expecting him to shrug and go in.
“Well, I’ll go and ask her.” Jade felt like punching his face. What a jerk.
“I said I couldn’t go.”Aaron thrust the box at her and raised his eyebrow.
“Why?” Jade frowned growing angrier ever second. He seemed to notice this and a cheeky smirk formed on his lips. “Look, it’s nothing big. My mother’s friends will be there and a couple of other people. I’ve told them you’re coming,” he said crossing his arms across his chest.
“And they said?” Jade asked, not convinced.
“They asked who you are and I simply said a friend. Whether you take the offer or not, up to you. The restaurant is The Dawning by the way,” he said, looking at her expectantly.
“Look, the choice of restaurant will not change my mind and we are not friends.” Jade said, her voice rising.
Aaron uncrossed his arms and moved closer to her. The only thing keeping their chest apart was the box.
“So what are we then?” he said quieter than the rest of the conversation had been.
“Neighbours.” Jade said, on a much louder volume.
“Well neighbours we are then! Just come ok, look nice, act nice,” he said and went in without giving time for Jade to answer back. She trudged back to her house feeling defeated.
Why did Aaron have to be so demanding? He barely knew her. She sat the box on the coffee table in the living room and sat down on the sofa. The clock on the wall read four-thirty. Two and a half hours to get ready. As much as she didn’t want to go, she felt a little excited. The Dawning! The most expensive restaurant in town. She hasn’t even set eyes on the place let alone eat in it.
Eager to look her best, she went upstairs with the box and started getting ready. She wanted to look good for the people as she was their guests. She certainly didn’t want to look good for Aaron.
No way.
