Last Saturday, the Saturday after the bonfire, two people met for a second date.
After Gilbert had not further discussed the fateful slow dance in the rain, one thing was certain for Anne Shirley Cuthbert. Gilbert Blythe has no feelings for her. Perhaps a small microscopic part in her had hoped, that it might be different. Maybe a part in her heart had hoped, that someone like Gilbert Blythe might have feelings for someone like her.
With the supposed realization that he had no deeper feelings for her, Anne set off on her second date with Roy Gardner.
It was a classic date, a romantic candlelit dinner. The date wasn't exactly what Anne hoped for, it wasn't spontaneous or extraordinary, it didn't have any personal aspects, but it was a date.
A date with Roy Gardner, the one who always clearly signaled his interest in her. The date was nice, that was undeniable, and the fact that Anne always liked Roy helped her to get through it, it helped her to get over her confusing feelings for Gilbert Blythe. At least that was what she was thinking at that moment.
The dinner went harmoniously, Anne and Roy found many things in common. Just like Anne, Roy is well-read and he is very interested in literature She learned that his favorite book is The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka.
When it comes to intellect, not many can keep up with Roy Gardner. Still, Anne asked herself if it was all she wanted from a man. After they got to know each other better at dinner, Roy accompanied Anne home.
At the gates of Green Gables and under a sky full of stars, he asked her the question he always wanted to ask.
Anne felt that he would ask her this question this evening, but she was still surprised when the five words left his mouth.
"Will you be my girlfriend?."
It wasn't a long explanation of why he wanted to be with her, nothing to show his feelings for her.
It was a simple sentence, a sentence with five words, a question, the answer of which made several hearts break at the same time.
She closed her eyes for a moment to think about his question. She wouldn't have expected what she saw in her mind's eye.
Dimples,

The pain that went through her heart, when they were sitting around the bonfire was back. The burning pain that went through her heart when he said >>Right, the hormones<<, when he confirmed her assumption that the dance had only triggered hormonal emotions.
All the pain was back.
What she was unable to understand was the fact that it was not a pain she felt, it was her heart that wanted to tell her for whom it was really beating for.
For a brief moment, she thought back to the time in the orphanage,
>>"Nobody will ever love an ugly, red-haired orphan like you"<<
The words that damaged her soul were echoing in her head. With that and the Feeling that Gilbert Blythe's words at the bonfire had caused, she opened her eyes and gave Roy the answer he had been waiting for.
"Yes!"
A three-letter word, an approval, an approval that will break more than one hearts, maybe even her own.

On his way to Gilbert, Charlie made a detour to his girlfriend Jane Andrews. What Gilbert currently needs is a friend who listens to him and another one who opens his eyes. Jane Andrews is known for having her tongue on her heart, she always says what she thinks, and for this reason Charlie Sloane and Jane Andrews set out for a stone house on the outskirts of Avonlea.

When Charlie and Jane arrived at Gilbert's home they were greeted by a worried-looking Bash.
"Charlie, Jane nice to see ya, come in," he welcomed them and gestured for them to enter the house.
Jane put her hand on Bash's arm, in a worried voice she asked "How is he?."
Bash walked to the sofa in the living room where Delly was playing with her doll. Charlie and Jane followed him and each of them greeted little Delly with a kiss on her sweet cheek.
They sat down on the sofa next to Bash. Bash scratched his forehead "Ya know, most of the time he acts like he is okay, but I know that he isn't." He took Delly and sat her on his lap. "Gilly sad," pouted the almost-three-year-old girl. Bash, Charlie and Jane smiled mildly at the little girl. "Gilly sad," Bash repeated the words of his little angel.
Charlie intertwined his fingers with his girlfriend and stood up. He pulled Jane from the sofa "Can we see him?," he directed his question to Bash who had his attention at his little daughter.
Bash turned to Charlie "Ya can try it."
Jane looked determinedly at Bash and announced "We will!"
Charlie and Jane went upstairs together. Halfway up the stairs they could hear music coming from Gilbert's room. It was the song that will always remind him of her, the one that became his favorite song after a slow Dance in the Rain with her.

Without knocking, Jane stormed into Gilbert's room, followed by her boyfriend. The two looked around. Everything looked normal except for the sight of Gilbert Blythe.
Gilbert looked as if a train had run over him, as if a wave had broken over him, causing him to drown.
It wasn't his greasy hair or the fact that he hasn't had a shower for days, which worried them both. What worried both of them was the look in his eyes.
His eyes were full of emptiness, the enjoyment of life and the gentleness that his eyes usually contained were blown away and a river full of tears ran down his cheeks.
"Oh Gilbert," it broke out of Jane.
Charlie and Jane ran toward Gilbert, who was crying in his bed. They wrapped him into a tight hug that couldn't have been firmer. They didn't care that Gilbert hadn't showered in days, all they wanted at that moment was to be there for their friend.
"We are here for you," announced Charlie who was patting Gilbert's back. He tried the best to comfort his best friend. It breaks him to see Gilbert like this.
Gilbert was sobbing, but he gathered all his strength that was left "It hurts Char, it hurts so fucking much."
"Gilbert look at me", Jane tried to draw his attention to her.
Gilbert didn't respond and so it was Charlie who took his best friend's head and pointed it towards Jane to wait for what she had to say.
"Gilbert John Blythe, now listen to me carefully."
Gilbert looked at Jane with wide puffy eyes, which she interpreted as a sign to continue with what she had to say
"Dare to give up! Everyone, absolutely everyone knows that Anne Shirley Cuthbert is your destiny. Gilbert, we are here for you. You can't give up without even starting to fight for her."
The way Jane spoke to him awakened something in him. It awakened his fighting spirit. She was right, it is pathetic to cry over something that has never been. Anne Shirley Cuthbert and Gilbert Blythe were always something,
rivals,
classmates,
friends,
but they were never more.
Gilbert Blythe has made a decision, he will fight, fight for what his heart longs for, fight for what he loves. He will fight for the heart of Anne Shirley Cuthbert, even if he has to hide his feelings for now.
Gilbert Blythe has to be a friend for Anne Shirley Cuthbert because he knows that she will soon need one, he knew that Roy Gardner will break her heart. But what he didn't know was that not Roy Gardner, but someone else, would break Anne Shirley Cuthbert's heart. Someone he knows only too well.
Gilbert straightened from the position he was in and sat up, he took a deep breath "Thanks, Guys! Jane you're right. It's pathetic to cry over something that was never mine. The thing is I hate the thought that she is with someone like Gardner. I don't trust the guy."
Gilbert took a sip from his water bottle. He has hardly spoken in the past few days and his dry mouth has needed fluid.
"We don't trust him either," said Charlie who took the water bottle out of Gilbert's hand to take a sip too.
"Gardner smells fishy. Gilbert he smells worse than you right now," uttered Jane and covered her nose jokingly.
Charlie and Gilbert had to laugh about Jane's sentence. Gilbert laughed for the first time in days and right now, at that very moment, he knew that this was all he needed. Two friends who listen to him, who are there for him and who open his eyes.

The barn is where Matthew spends most of the day, so it was no wonder that Marilla chose it as the party location. Jerry Baynard, for whom Matthew is like a second father, asked Marilla to help decorate it. Marilla, who finds Jerry a little strange, but has a place for him in her heart, gladly accepted his offer.
Since Matthew is a simple guy, they decorated the barn simply, but still charmingly. Simple and charming, just like Matthew is.
They placed hay bales on the barn floor to serve as seating for the guests. Pillows and blankets have been laid out for the necessary comfort and fairy Lights framed the location.
Marilla and Jerry hung up pictures of Matthew.
Matthew as a baby, pictures of his first day at school, pictures of him and his prom date Jeannie, pictures of his work on the farm, of Anne's arrival at the station, the first Christmas as a family. Pictures of a lifetime, full of love and memories.

Anne Shirley Cuthbert was nervous. Marilla invited her boyfriend Roy Gardner to Matthew's birthday party. To the birthday party that some of her friends would come to. Anne knows that the majority of her friends don't like Roy Gardner, but she still wished that they would be a little happy for her.
She wished she knew the reason why her friends were so averse to Roy.
Anne was just getting ready for the party when there was a knock on her room door.
"Come in," she thought it might be Marilla or Matthew.
She looked to see that a thin, dark-haired young man stood in her doorway "Hey sis watcha doing?" it was Jerry who tried to fake Bash's accent. Jerry entered the room without Anne's permission and jumped on her bed.
Anne laughed "You're really something else Jer."
Jerry looked at Anne and smirked "I know sis, Bash called me a skinny legend."
Anne got up from her desk chair where she was sitting at "He isn't wrong," she addressed to Jerry and smiled.
Jerry shifted into a sitting position "Where's your bo - boy- fri - e-n-d?," he asked laughing, then he added "Uh that was hard to say," and pretended to wipe sweat from his forehead.
Anne's expression grew more serious and so did the sound of her voice. "What do you all have against Roy?," she wished that Jerry would tell her why everyone dislikes Roy.
Jerry thought briefly about what to answer "He gives me bad Vibes, "
Anne sat down next to Jerry. She was desperately searching for answers. "What do you mean by that?"
Jerry got up from Anne's bed "His eyes," he walked to the door and continued "It's all in the eyes," and with that he walked out and closed the door.
Anne was confused about Jerry's statement. She shook her thoughts away and continued to get ready for the birthday party.

Gilbert Blythe was angry, angry with himself, with Anne and especially with Roy Gardner.
Now on this late summer day in June he has to face his anger. He has to face the feelings he's trying to hide.
When Bash, Delly and Gilbert reached Green Gables, not many guests were there yet. Only Marilla, Rachel Lynde and her husband Thomas, as well as Diana and Jerry were already in the barn.
Gilbert looked for freckles, red hair, and ocean blue eyes, but wherever his eyes took him, she was nowhere to be found.
As Bash mingled with the adults, Gilbert greeted his two friends. "Hi Di, hi Jer," he hugged both.
Jerry released himself from Gilbert's hug "Hey my favorite Mango Slayer," he greeted his friend in his own special way.
Gilbert looked at his right where Bash was sitting on a hay barn "I will kill him," he muttered.
"Who do you want to kill?," a male voice was heard behind him.
You, I will kill you! ,
Gilbert thought and clenched his jaw in anger, knowing that the voice he heard belonged to Roy Gardner.
He turned around to see him. Royal Gardner, his ex-rival in school, his current rival in life. Roy looked like the day Gilbert saw him last. His curly hair tamed with gel, an arrogant look on his face and hateful eyes that were looking at him.
"Gardner!," Gilbert said trying to hide his anger.
Roy's left eyebrow raised and he looked Gilbert up and down.
"Blythe!," The tension was palpable
"I've heard that your relationship with the Rose girl didn't last", he stopped for a moment "It doesn't surprise me, people like you don't suit people like her."
Gilbert was furious inside. He was in the process of clenching his hand into a fist to beat up Roy, as he had done years ago with Billy Andrews, but then his eyes spotted red hair, freckles and ocean blue eyes.
Anne looked as pretty as always. She was wearing the mustard-colored dress that she wore the day they were eating ice cream. She also wore the daisy-shaped chain, the chain that reminded him of the prom, of the night Anne danced with Roy Gardner.
"Hey," she directed her greeting to her boyfriend. Roy pulled her into a hug and kissed her cheek, his eyes fixed at Gilbert "Hey my little flower."
The view of Anne in Roy's arms caused a pain to pass through Gilbert's body that he had never felt before, a pain as sharp as a knife that pierces his heart.
Anne turned to Gilbert and when their eyes met, the pain in her heart was back. Her mind was unable to receive her heart's message, It was unable to understand that her heart yearned for

"Hi Gil, how are you?" Anne asked him with her sweet voice, with the voice Gilbert wished he could hear for the rest of his life.
Roy backed off a little, but watched his girlfriend and his sworn enemy with eagle eyes.
"I'm fine thanks for asking Anne-girl." He wanted to say Don't you see me?, don't you see how you hurt me?, but he remained silent and hide his emotions.
"He's coming!," a shout more in a whisper was heard.
It was Diana Barry looking for Matthew to come. She saw him outside the Gates of Green Gables and announced his soon arrival. In order to surprise Matthew, everyone had to hide.
Gilbert took Anne's hand and pulled her to a stack of hay. The touch of Gilbert Blythe was warm, the warmth of his touch went through her skin right through her heart and inflamed it once more.
"Gil!," Anne whispered.
Now they were standing there, holding hands behind a large pile of hay. Gilbert didn't want to let go of her hand, he wanted to feel the electricity that filled his body with life, the softness of her skin that made him shiver. He never wanted to let her go again.
"Pssssssstttt Anne-girl," he responded and put his index finger on his lips to indicate for her to be silent.
Anne's eyes were glued at him, fixated at the index finger on his lips.
Roy, who was watching them with eagle eyes was boiling inside. The problem is, Roy Gardner has always been jealous of Gilbert Blythe. Gilbert was always Avonlea's golden boy, he had the best grades, he was the best athlete and the prettiest girls wanted to go out with him.
Every girl except one.
Roy's heart cries out for Anne Shirley Cuthbert, but his motives aren't what it looks like. Roy Gardner wears a mask that hides feelings, feelings of jealousy and hatred.
He feels hatred for Gilbert Blythe. His heart doesn't cry out for the love of Anne Shirley Cuthbert, it cries out for revenge on Gilbert Blythe.
Roy Gardner wants to see Gilbert Blythe on the ground and that's why he took what Gilbert loves the most.
The barn gate opened "SURPRISE!!!!!," the group of guests shouted. This got Anne out of her thoughts, thoughts of lips that are not her boyfriend's. "Surprise," she whispered to herself.
Anne let go of Gilbert's hands, which she had held until then and ran into Matthew's arms.
"Happy Birthday my sweet Matthew," she said and gave him a sweet kiss on the cheek.
Matthew looked confused to see all the people in his barn. "Barn...What are y'all doing in my barn?"
Anne had to laugh and Gilbert thought God damn, her laugh.
Matthew was more than confused, a humble man like him had never expected something like this. He was stunned and so all he could say was "THANK YOU."
Gilbert approached Matthew "Happy Birthday Mr. Cuthbert," he held his hand out, but what Matthew did took him by surprise. Matthew Cuthbert hugged Gilbert Blythe. It's not a secret, that Matthew is very fond of Gilbert. Deep down he wished that his Anne would end up with the boy in front of him. "Thank you son. I appreciate it!" he said in a fatherly tone, which reminded Gilbert of his own father.
"Happy Birthday Mr.C", it was Jerry who gratulated him. "ALL THE BEST TO YA," shouted Bash who was chatting with Muriel Stacey.
A person unknown to Matthew came closer to him "Ah Mr. Cuthbert I wish you all the best. Happy Birthday!," it was Royal Gardner who spoke with the fakest attitude of attitudes.
"Who are you?," asked Matthew bewildered as he shook his hand with Roy.
"Oh where are my manners?," he went with his hand through his gates hair, like if he wanted to clean it after the touch of Matthew's hard-working hand. "My name is Royal, Royal Gardner. I'm Anne's boyfriend," he added to his previous words.
Matthew was at a loss of words. He wondered how she could choose someone like Roy Gardner when someone like Gilbert Blythe was right in front of her eyes.
"Oh," was all that Matthew could say.
He looked at Roy than at Gilbert, he repeated this maybe ten times. It was like he was watching a tennis match. A match that is not played with balls, but hearts.
Anne, who was talking to Diana and Jerry, saw the 3 men standing there.
One of these men had her heart safe, another would give anything to swap his heart with hers, while the third was playing with more than one heart.
Some people hide their feelings to protect others,
others hide their feelings because they have not yet reached the surface
and some hide feelings to harm others.
