Dakota's mother died when she was only three and she has been left with her father and sister ever since. Her father has married several times since their mother's death but is never happy enough. Dakota doesn't really think of him as a person any more because of the abuse he brings to the table and because he was responsible for their mother's death. Due to everything that goes on at home Dakota is a depressed teenager struggling to cope with life, especially school.
