Charlotte Giudicelli, the younger sister of the prima donna herself, has not led an easy life. Her stepmother and sister believe her to be nothing more than a servant and treat her as such, and the Vicomte de Chagny seems determined to win her hand in marriage. Though Charlotte and the vicomte were childhood friends, Gaston de Chagny has since grown arrogant and selfish, his temper only growing worse each time Charlotte turns down his proposal. Because her voice cannot be heard over her stepsister's constant demands and because she has never been taught to dance, Charlotte has no choice but to make end's meet by catering to Carlotta's every whim. As the diva's view of her stepsister spreads throughout the Opera Populaire, the atmosphere of the theatre in which Charlotte works and loves soon turns toxic, and she finds herself performing the most menial and grueling of tasks meant for men much stronger than she. Luckily, Charlotte soon finds the loving mother she never knew in Madame Giry, as well as a friend and confidant in her daughter, Meg. Though their kindness helps her get through the day, Charlotte only finds true solace when she has returned to her dormitory... "No, what I love best," Lottie said, "is when I'm asleep in my bed, and the Angel of Music sings songs in my head."
