Do I harbor a lot of fears and that's why I write horror?

I've been told that fear is something we ourselves create. If so to make people who read your stories get goosebumps have you experienced harboring fear in yourself? After all a story won't be real to others unless you make it real to yourself right?

Not as an adult. But when I was a kid, I was very fearful and shy. I was afraid of the dark, afraid someone was hiding in our garage, afraid of a lot of things. I think that's why I stayed in my room writing for hours. Later on, when I started to write scary books, I could remember that childhood feeling of fear, and I used it in my books.
