"RUN!" Joel yelled out. Tess helped your sister up as you ran and jumped into a massive hole in the ground. You all ducked down and followed Tess. You could hear other soldiers finding the two dead ones and calling for backup. You followed closely behind Joel as he lead you through a bunch of soldiers and to an underground room. "Alright" Joel said. "Are we safe?" your sister said, a little out of breath. "No. They're still around. Look. Take a moment to catch your breath" Tess replied. You hunched over a little and took some deep breaths. Your sister came over to you and put her hand on your back. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I'm kind of panicking if I'm being honest" you said and stood up straight. Ellie grabbed your arm and said "it's okay, we're still on track. Smile a little, you're stressing yourself out". "What's there to smile about Ellie? Everything is fucked" you say and walk off. "Tess, up through here, through this pipe. I think we can make it through here" Joel said. "You two, stay very close" Tess said. You walked through some water to a door in the pipe. Your sister sat down on a log and you stood off to the side. "Alright, they're gone" Joel said. Tess went over to Ellie and knelt down, "look - what was the plan? Let's say that we deliver you to the Fireflies, what then?". "Marlene... She said that they have their own little quarantine zone. With doctors there, still trying to find a cure" Ellie explained. "Yeah, we've heard that before, huh, Tess?" Joel said. "And that... whatever happened to me is the key to finding a vaccine" Ellie continued. "Oh. Jesus" Joel said in disbelief. "It's what she said" you joined in. "Oh. I'm sure she did" Joel replied. "Hey, fuck you, man. I didn't ask for this" your sister said and stood up in frustration. "Me neither. Tess, what the hell are we doing here?" Joel asked. "What if it's true?" Tess asked back. "I can't believe-" Joel said and turned away. "What if, Joel? I mean we've come this far, let's just finish it" Tess said. Joel grabbed her arm, "do I need to remind you what is out there?". "I get it" Tess said and walked away. You and your sister followed. "This way. If we cut through downtown, we can hit the capitol building by sunrise" Tess said and pointed at a sign. As you followed her you got up close on the skyscraper buildings you could always see in the distance. "Holy moley, I guess this is what these buildings look like up close. They're so damn tall" your sister said as you both looked up at the buildings that seemed like they could come crashing down any minute. "So, what happened here?" you asked out of curiosity. "They bombed the hell out of the surrounding areas to the quarantine zones, hoping to kill as much of the infected as possible. It worked - for a little while" Tess answered. In the distance you heard some sort of noise, maybe a screech. "Uhh, what the hell was that?" your sister asked. "Tess, you hear that?" Joel asked her. You walked closer to your sister now, she looked over at you and tried to give you a comforting smile. "Yeah. Sounded pretty far away though" she answered back calmly. You hear Joel mutter something but you weren't sure what. "Are we safe?" you asked, timid. "For now. Come on" Tess said. You carefully walked over to the edge of the platform, Ellie put her hand out in front of you and pushed you back a little. "Damn. That's quite a drop" she said. Joel looked out into the dostance and pointed out the capitol building, "Yeah, we need to get around tbis mess" Tess said. "This is the downtown area?" you asked. "It was. Now it's a giant wasteland" Tess responded. You followed Joel through a collapsed building onto a roof. You were looking for a way down to the street and to the capitol building. "Hey, Tess" Joel called out. "Comin'" Tess responded. You followed Tess to Joel where you found a dead soldier. His face was all bloodied and there was blood spatter on the wall behind him. You looked away from him, feeling uncomfortable staring. Your sister grabbed your hand and squeezed it. "He's been ripped apart. Body's pretty fresh" Tess said. That caught your attention and you looked to her. "Is that bad?" your sister asked, reading your mind. "Yeah, might be... Let's not stick around" she answered. You walked up past the body and up a pair of slanted stairs where you saw another one. "Looks like these guys died waiting for back up" Joel said after reading a note the soldier had next to him. You frowned slightly and continued up the stairs. You came across another body but it wasn't anything like the others you had come across. "Goddammit. Clicker" Joel said, "Geez... What's wrong with its face?" Ellie asked as Joel peeled it off of the door in front of you. "That's what years of infection'll do to you" Tess answered. "So what? Are they... blind?" you chimed in with the questions. "Sort of. They see using sound" Tess replied. "Like bats?" you sister asked. "Like bats. If you hear one clicking, you gotta hide. That's how they spot you" Tess said. "Great" you whispered and shook your head. You heard what sounded like metal shifting. "Shit" Ellie said. "Whole building feels like it's about to fall apart" Joel said. The whole building felt unsturdy to you. "Watch your head" Joel said as you crawled under and then over pieces of wood. As you were passing by it, a chair on wheels skidded down the unlevel room. The only way through the room was a door that was stuck, "Gimme a hand with this" Joel said to Tess. They pushed the door open but Joel got immediately attacked by a clicker. It ran up on him and knocked him to the ground. You had no choice but to stand there and watch, hoping Tess could help him out. Luckily he got the clicker off of himself and Tess shot it in the head. "Thanks..." Joel said, out of breath. "You alright?" both you and your sister said, with fragile voices. "It's nothin'" Joel said, brushing it off. You followed Joel and Tess into the next room, looking for supplies. "Shit! Oh that was intense!" your sister said. "You said it" Tess replied back. You released a heavy sigh and looked over at your sister who was already looking at you. Her usual demeanor changed and she looked at you with kind eyes, "It'll be okay y/n/n, you're safe" she said with a soft tone. "I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't this" you said honestly. Tess looked over at you and Ellie and butted in, "Then why'd you come kid". You looked over at her like she had two heads, then pointed to your sister, "She goes, I go". "C'mon. Let's get the hell out of here" Joel intterupted. You went into a room where you saw a wooden pallet in a pool of water, you saw a ledge above it and a guy hanging from a railing. "Up there. Look" Tess said. Joel went over to it and cupped his hands to give a boost, "Just see if there's a way through" he said as he boosted Tess up. She looked around but found no immediate danger, "It's clear. Come on, Ellie" she said and put her hand down for Ellie to jump and grab. Tess grabbed your sisters hand mid jump and pulled her up. Then both Tess and Ellie put their hands out for you. You jumped up and grabbed both their hands and they pulled you up no problem. Once Tess had helped Joel up you all noticed a clicking sound. "Oh, shit. Go, go, go" Joel said as he ushered you all behind a desk to hide. Tess threw a bottle to distract it while everyone made their way to the scaffolding at the back of the room. Your sister helped and pulled you up since you were shorter than her and couldn't reach the top. You jumped down into a stairwell. "I think that's it. You two okay?" Tess asked. "Other than shitting my pants... I'm fine" you sister answered, you just nodded your head. Joel dragged a desk out of the way and you jumped down, following Tess. "The stairwell's blocked. Should we go back up?" your sister asked. You saw a way through but it was fucking crazy. "Ahh, this is crazy" Tess said and jumped onto a wobbly platform outside. "Just don't look down" she said and looked back at you. Your eyes grew wide and you grabbed your sisters hand, "No fucking way am I doing this". "You're light, you'll be fine" Joel said and pushed you forward. "I'll go first, show you it's okay" Ellie said and squeezed your hand before letting it go and jumping onto the platform. You shakily followed after her, focusing on straight ahead of you, knowing if you looked down you wouldn't be able to move. You followed along the narrow platform, trying not to slip. When you got in the window you let out a deep breath you were holding. As you got more in the building you started hearing what you were sure was infected. "I'll go check it out. Stay with them" Joel said and went to clear all the infected out. Once he was done you made your way through and then very far down to the bottom of the building. You ran into a few more clickers on the way out but you carefully snuck past them and made your way outside. "Holy shit. We actually made it" your sister said in disbelief. She looked over to you, "You okay?". "As okay as I can be, hopefully there won't be too much of this right?" you asked her. "Once we get to where we're going, we'll be golden little bro" she said and smiled at you. You however did not share the same optimism. "You guys are pretty good at this stuff" Ellie said. "It's called luck, and it's gonna run out" Joel said with his usual pessimistic demeanor. After dealing with infected and scavaging for supplies in nearby buildings, Joel found a dumpster to move so you could get over a wall. You heard infected getting closer as Joel worked fast to get a garage door open. Once open enough your sister pushed you in first, trying to get you further away from the danger. Joel got grabbed on the way in but Tess dropped the door on its head. "Oh... you got something on your shoe" Ellie said and you gagged a little. He shook the hand off like it was nothing and moved along. Tess and Ellie shared a conversation while you helped Joel find a way out. There was a hole to get out but there was debris in the way. "Alright, watch your head. Hurry. Go, go, go" Joel said as you all rushed underneath, He couldn't hold on for much longer as it all broke before he could make his way through. "Joel. Joel!" Tess yelled out. It was obvious that they cared about one another. "I'm alive. I'll make my way around to you" he said. "Oh... Look they're here!" you yelled as you saw infected running towards you. "Run. Run!" Tess screamed as you all booked it in the other direction. You had made your way to a different room while Tess tried to hold them off. Soon Joel busted through the door as Tess bashed one of their skulls in. Then you noticed your sister wasn't with you and you ran to where you heard her voice. She was being grabbed by a runner. Protection mode kicked in as you came up behind it, kicking it's knee and using your knife to stab it multiple times in the head, "Get off her you sick fuck!" you yelled. You looked up to see if your sister was okay but then more infected came and you took her hand, running to get out of the way so Joel and Tess could take care of them. "That was too damn close" Joel said out of breath. You hugged your sister tight, "Are you okay?" you asked worried. "Thanks to you" she laughed and hugged you back. "Turning into a badass I see" she said smiling, ruffling your hair a little. You shook your head and continued on. "Oh shit" Tess said and hunched over a little. "Tess, you holding up okay?" Joel asked. "Just a bit winded" she answered breathless. "This way. This'll get us to the roof" she said and jumped onto the platform outside. You could see the sun was starting to rise. You followed Tess up to the roof, you could see the capitol building was now closer than it was before. "We gotta find a way across. There she is. That's our building" Tess said. You looked out to see the building with a beautiful sky behind it, your eyes softened as you looked on. When you got to enoy the little things, such as a beautiful sunrise, you took it, especially in this world. Joel placed a plank to join the two buildings, "Alright. Now you watch your step as you're going up 'cause it's going to be a little-" Joel said but got cut off by Ellie blowing by him, "Pssh". You chuckled a little and shook your head. You slowly and carefully followed after her, not as confident. You joined Ellie in staring at the capitol building. "Well, is that everything you hoped for?" Joel asked, coming up behind the two of you. "Jury's still out. But, man... you can't deny that view" Ellie said, smiling. She looked over at you as you looked on with soft eyes and a smile that only came out around her. She smiled to herself and put her arm on your shoulder. "C'mon. This way" Tess said and walked by you. You could hear Tess and Joel bickering about something as you climbed down the ladder. "It's right around this corner. C'mon" Tess said. "Look at this" Joel said and you looked over to see a recently dead person. "There's a firefly logo on his arm. What if we get there and they're all dead?" Ellie asked. "They won't be" Tess replied back. "But how do you know?" you asked. "I just do. Look it's gonna be fine" Tess said, trying to calm the both of you down. "Okay" you both said. "It has to be" Tess said, more to herself than to you. You got to the main street that lead straight to the capitol bulding. "Um... just so it's out there. I can't swim" you sister said as you came up on a part of the street that's flooded. "Look, it looks like it's shallow on the right side. Follow me" Tess said and took the lead. "I'm glad Marlene hired you guys" Ellie said truthfully. "What do you mean?" Tess asked. "I know you guys are getting paid for this but - I'm trying to say thanks" Ellie said back. "Yeah, sure thing" Tess said. You made your way up the steps of the capitol building. Once Joel opened the door you realized the plan just came crashing down. "No. No, no" Tess said and ran to the dead bodies of the people who were supposed to transport you. "What happens now?" you asked, most definitely panicked. "What are you doing, Tess?" Joel asked her. "Oh, God. Maybe they ah, maybe they had a map or something to tell us where they were going" Tess said, frantic. "How far are we gonna take this?" Joel asked. "As far as it needs to go. Where was this lab of theirs?" Tess asked your sister. "Oh, she never said. She only mentioned that it was someplace out west" Ellie answered. "What are we doing here? This is not us" Joel said to Tess. "What do you know about us? About me?" Tess asked. "I know that you are smarter than this" Joel said back. "Really? Guess what, we're shitty people, Joel. It's been that way for a long time" Tess said. "No, we are survivors!" Joel said, his voice picking up. "This is our chance-" Tess got cut off. "It is over, Tess! Now we tried. Let's just go home" Joel yelled. "I'm not... I'm not going anywhere. This is my last stop" Tess said, tearfully. "What?" Joel asked, clearly confused. You felt the gears start turning in your head, she was bitten. "Our luck had to run out sooner or later" she said. "What are you going on about--" Joel started but got cut off when he tried to touch her shoulder. "No don't- Don't touch me" she said. Your sister stepped forward, "Holy shit. She's infected". Joel backed away and looked at her in disbelief. "Joel..." Tess said and shook her head. "Let me see it" he said. "I didn't mean for this-" she began. "Show it to me" he said a little more forcefully. There it was, right on her shoulder/neck area. "Oh. Chirst" Joel said. "Oops, right? Give me your arm" Tess said and pulled Ellie's sleeve up, revealing her bite. "This was three weeks. I was bitten an hour ago and it's already worse. This is fucking real, Joel. You've got to get this girl to Tommy's. He used to run with this crew, he'll know where to go" Tess said, basically pleading Joel. "No, no, no, that was your crusade. I am not doin' that" Joel replied, clearly shaken. "Yes you are. Look, there's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me. So you get her to Tommy's" Tess said. Then you heard a noise, the soldiers had found you. "They're here" Tess said and pulled out her gun. "I can buy you some time, but you have to run" she said. "You want us to just leave you here?" you asked like she was crazy. "Yes" she said, no doubt in her mind. "There is no way that-" Joel started. "I will not turn into one of those things. Come on. Make this easy for me" she said on the verge of tears. You could not believe what you were hearing. You've never been through something like this, for being in an apocolyptic world you were pretty sheltered. If anyone was seeing the hard stuff your sister made sure it was her. "I can fight-" Joel said not convinced. Tess pushed him back, "No, just go! Just fucking go". "Ellie, y/n" Joel said. "I'm sorry, I didn't - I didn't mean for this" Ellie said to tess. You felt the guilt pang in your chest, maybe it wasn't directly your fault but you sure as hell felt like it was. "Get a move on" Joel said, not breaking eye contact with Tess. You looked back at Tess one more time and jogged after your sister. "What the fuck? I can't believe we did that" Ellie said. "Stop" Joel told her. "We just left her to die" you joined in, raising your voice a little. "Stop. You stay close to me. We have to move" Joel said trying to brush it off. "We'll go upstairs. We can probably get out from there" Joel told you. You could hear gunshot after gunshot as you climbed the stairs. Then you heard Tess scream and your heart instantly dropped. You knew it was coming, it doesn't prepare you any more for it though. You made eye contact with your sister and you could tell she was feeling the same way you were. As you came up on the balcony you saw Tess's dead body and the soldiers surrounding her. You were frozen, staring down at her body, the world around you became fuzzy and all you could hear was you heart hammering in your chest.
