And Layla's gave to diff'rent man
Than one for whom she long had planned
To be her groom upon that day
When vows and wedding bands are gaveFor sake of charm she's bought by purse
Her beauty both the lovers' curse.
And sadness marred the rest of life
She's doomed to be another's wifeBut also Qay does feel the sting
That love that's lost does surely bring.
From fellow man like beast he goes
To places only beast abode. His hair is long his beard unkept
On both his feet and hands he crept
And never spoke but only wrote
Of Layla's charms with which he's smoteAnd all his poems fill those wilds
On caves and stones and cliffs compiled
He words proclaiming love they shared
Though none but he alone would care. And men who still as men did live
This name to Qays those days did give
As Majnun Layla who's driven mad
By charms that only Layla had.And many years do come and go
And Layla's sadness also grows
Until at last her grief does slay
The one whose heart was Majnun gaveAnd Qays then went where grave did lie
For there he also wants to die.
On back of stone he poem wrote
The last his hands will ever smoteAnd life was gone not took by hand
Forsook by not but will of man
Who grieves the bride he's never gave
On top of bride's own very grave. And many years since age had past
When Majnun took to writing task
If any men those wilds he lived
Do think the wilds their life to giveAnd set forsook of any hope
There daunt by desert's mad'ning scope
Perhaps a poem on stone there scored
That maybe none have seen beforeThey'll chance to read before their harmed
That speaks at length on Layla's charms
And rise renewed again to roam
To find a path that leads to home...
