Vanessa

"Okay," I began, my voice shaky as I prepared to bare a part of myself I had kept hidden for so long. "I need to tell you something. This idea of a fated mate... it scares me."

His eyes softened, his large hand giving mine a reassuring squeeze. Could I tell him?

"Draug," I gulped, trying to organise my jumble of thoughts, "I want to believe in what you're saying, but... commitment scares me." My voice quavered as I continued, "My parents have always had a difficult marriage. They fought constantly, and their unhappiness seeped into every aspect of our lives. It was suffocating. I swore I would never let myself become trapped like that." My voice got all choked up and I blinked back tears.

He pulled me closer to him. His strong arms enveloped me, providing a sense of security that I hadn't felt in a long time. "Vanessa," he murmured, his breath warm against my ear, "I understand your fear, but our bond is different from anything you've experienced before."

He leaned back, cupping my face in his rough hands, forcing me to meet his intense golden eyes. "I am committed to you, not just as your mate, but as your partner and protector. I will spend the rest of my life cherishing you, supporting you, and fighting by your side."

My heart melted.

His sincerity seeped into every word, and I found myself believing him. As I looked into his eyes, the walls around my heart began to crumble, allowing the first rays of hope to penetrate the darkness. The tension in my body eased, replaced by a growing warmth and desire to be close to him.

"Vanessa, I love you," Draug whispered, his voice raw with emotion. "I know we come from different worlds, but our souls are intertwined, and nothing can sever that connection."

Wow.

The intensity of his declaration shook me to my core, and tears welled up in my eyes. For the first time in my life, I felt truly seen, understood, and valued by another person. My heart swelled with a mixture of gratitude and love, threatening to burst from my chest. Whoa.

As I looked into his eyes, searching for any hint of deception or manipulation, all I found was raw vulnerability and earnestness. I leaned into Draug's embrace, the fears of my past beginning to fade, replaced by the promise of a future filled with love, understanding, and unwavering support.

My heart still raced in my chest, but the look of pure devotion in his eyes calmed the storm inside me. And in that moment, I knew that I was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, as long as we faced them together.

"Are you sure about this?" I asked quietly, my voice barely audible even to myself.

I needed him to be 100% sure. I couldn't handle giving him my heart and him crushing it.

"I have never been more certain of anything in my life." His voice was strong yet tender.

His thumb gently traced the curve of my jaw, sending shivers down my spine. As I began to accept him as my mate, I could feel something shift within me, as though our souls were aligning, becoming one.

"Then I trust you, Draug," I whispered, taking a deep breath.

A soft smile spread across his face, warming my heart like the first rays of sunlight after a long, cold night. He leaned in slowly, giving me ample time to pull away if I felt the need to.

But as his lips brushed against mine, all doubts vanished from my mind. Our connection was undeniable, and the desire between us burned hotter than any star. Hell, yes.

Our kiss deepened, and I found myself lost in the sensation of his touch. His hands cradled my face, the rough pads of his fingers contrasting against the smoothness of my skin. My body pressed against his, seeking the warmth and comfort only he could provide. Every fibre of my being seemed to be drawn to him, as if a magnetic force had taken hold.

Draug's tongue teased at my lips, and I eagerly granted him entrance. Our breaths mingled, and I revelled in the taste of him- a heady mix of power and vulnerability that left me intoxicated.

Time seemed to stand still, and I felt as though we were the only two beings in existence– until a sudden, jarring beep shattered the illusion.

"Attention: Unidentified ship approaching. You are being hailed," a disembodied voice announced through the communication system, intruding upon our intimate moment like an unwelcome guest.

"Damn it," Draug muttered, his golden eyes flashing with frustration as we broke apart. The warmth that had radiated between us just moments before was replaced by a cold emptiness. I couldn't help but feel annoyed at the interruption.

"Who could it be?" I asked, frowning.

"Only one way to find out," Draug replied gruffly, striding over to the communication console with purposeful steps. His fingers moved deftly over the controls, a testament to his experience navigating the dangers of the universe.

As he worked, I couldn't help but notice the way his muscles tensed beneath his skin, each movement a reminder of the immense power he wielded. It was both thrilling and terrifying to know that he was now my mate, and that our lives were intertwined for better or worse.

I gulped. Had Dookur and Anwir found us?
