"Dakota!" I yelled as I ran towards my best friend.

Dakota turned around and smiled at me. My eyes sparkled once I saw his smile.

I stopped right in front of my best friend and tried to catch my breath. Between pants I asked, "are you ready for first grade?"

Dakota shrugged and said, "I'm not sure."

I noticed something was wrong with him. I looked into his chocolate brown eyes, and that's when I noticed something was bothering him.

"Is something wrong?" I asked, tilting my head.

The brown-haired boy sighed and said, "promise me we won't ever fall in love with each other. I wouldn't want to hurt you."

A moment of silence. I broke the silence by bursting into fits of laughter. Dakota pouted at me. I didn't mean to make fun of my friend, but what he said was ridiculous! We're best friends, we'd never fall in love with each other. Dakota was the last person I'd want to fall in love with.

"I'm sorry for laughing, but there's no way that'll happen. To make you feel better, I promise not to fall in love with you," I said, holding out my left pinkie finger.

Dakota grinned and locked his pinkie with mine.

     I smiled.
