Hello all. I’m really grateful for everyone who’s been reading Refrain this far. It’s a project born out of my last bit of hope for finding purpose and joy in life. It’s not perfect, far from it; but it’s made me taste hope unlike anything before.

However, I regret to say that I’ll be putting the weekly updates on pause for now. For very inexplicable reasons, Refrain has been flagged up by Wattpad’s internal systems and put under review. What could possibly warrant this I have no idea. But the fact remains that the book is currently invisible on the platform, and can only be accessed through my profile and public reading lists. Hence, it feels less urgent—or necessary even—to feed new chapters into it.

I’ll be using this time to work on other writing projects in real life, and hope to see you soon once Refrain is back in the open. Take care :))

Chapter 16 is here.

It’s really a crime, but I started reading my first-ever printed オンライン小説 (omg, why wouldn’t this announcement function let me post the English word here?!!!) series only just last week. And, well, I’ve learned some things, the first of which was that belles lettres are just a heap of words if you don’t make an equal effort about plot—not just any plot, but a plot that makes people care, and be kinder, and I’m so grateful that @RuslanAdihanyan reminded me of this last week. It was a very timely warning bell. I’d hate to turn into Proust et. al., who write selfish books, for themselves.

If my cast sounds a bit strange this week, this would be the reason.

So grateful for all the conversations I’ve had on here. —Eli Aki

@RuslanAdihanyan 小說 is the same word in Japanese and Chinese :)) means novel. I was trying to say the other English word for ‘online novel’ but maybe because it’s also the name of a competitor of Wattpad, so Wattpad wouldn’t let me post it here in the announcement.

@Eli_Akime I'm not good at Chinese, I wonder what this word is? Do you know Chinese?

This past weekend—visiting spring, fixing synopsis, getting grossed out by Philip Roth’s vaguely unpleasant mind, and falling for the honey trap known as Heaven Official’s Blessing—passed me by, silently and sneakily, so I have nothing to offer this Monday. New chapter next Thursday!

Refrain’s finale is provisionally set to be in April. Maybe procrastination is just my way of dragging out the long goodbye.

Have a lovely start to the week everyone! xx

@ Eli_Akime Time is such a thing when you need it, there is always not enough of it, and when you don’t need it, it drags on eternity. ☺️❤️

@RuslanAdihanyan MY FRIEND are you a mind reader I was just talking to someone about The Name of the Wind and its empty grave the other day A generational trauma of a reading experience…

Sorry for not commenting on your chapters this week. Time has not been generous lately. I’ll do better in the coming days!

Hello gentle readers. The second part of Nightline has just landed. I’m heeding the reviewer’s advice this week, which was to have more dialogues. ‘It helps to bring a story to life.’ (Such a way to put it!) I’ve nothing against life. So here’s a chatty chapter, I hope. If it’s too chatty, I’ve added some music to help with the flow. Turn it on, try it :)

Please tune in later on my social media, where I’ll tell you about the beautiful disciple behind Chopin’s Nocturne in F Minor, Op. 55, dedicated to her.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend ahead. Go greet spring!

          —Eli Aki, with love.
