When several years ago, a devastating virus began to infect 'augs', humans who possess digital and robotic implants, the elites had a quick solution to the problem: the Purge. Anyone caught with so much as a wire under their skin was rounded up, stripped of their augments, or detained and quarantined in specialized prisons. AIs in cyberspace were captured and eradicated, and those with android bodies deleted and their hardware dismantled.

Red used to serve humanity as Captain of one of the greatest space vessels in the navy, but the Purge did not stop before ranks or titles. He spent the last seven years locked up in the prison complex on Helion 7, waiting for his death. His long lost hope of escape is rekindled when an unusual new prisoner arrives at the complex, and a mad race begins to reach the one remaining sanctuary for augmented humans: the enigmatic colony at the edge of known space, "New Elysium".

Meanwhile, space pirate Amy Larsson uncovers that not all hardware has been destroyed in the Purge. A network of lies and deceit runs through the central worlds, and it all connects to a secret of her own past. What begins as an insane plan to steal one of the biggest spaceships in the human fleet, soon turns into a quest for truth and retribution, as they uncover a conspiracy of unexpected magnitude.
