I am absolutely blown away -- "The Cunning Man" is one of ONC 2021's Honorable Mentions!!

I never, EVER thought that this random idea would be so successful. This is my first ONC ever and just...wow. What a journey! I learned a LOT about my writing process and style. I bonded with other great writers. And I do believe I found the project that I'll be working on to publication and beyond.

I will name specific people later today, but thus labor of love is owed to the encouragement and investment of a number of amazing people. A great big THANK YOU to all of you who read, reviewed, and cheered me along. To think...I very nearly abandoned this. ❤

Writing and submitting for the ONC this year burned me out, so I've been on a bit of a break. However, @_Foxicious is a terrible influence (read: brilliant inspirer) and I'm sorely tempted to work on a submission for this year's Watty's.

However...I'm not ready to tackle original fiction at this time, just because the ONC taught me how much emotional energy I put into the outcomes of my work. As I have some final life changes planned for the later half of this year, and I'm still adjusting to a new career, I don't have the emotional energy to spare, I think, on an original fiction submission (however, I DO have my sights set on completing and submitting the novel-length version of "The Cunning Man" for the 2022 Watty's).

I'm considering fanfiction, as I have two older projects that were well received at the time I was working on them. One is a Star Wars fanfiction -- on Thrawn, specifically -- and the other is a Hobbit fanfiction. Anyone got any input on which direction to go? I'm leaning toward a Star Wars fanfiction submission...but The Hobbit fanfiction is further along and has a more fleshed out concept. (Alternatively, it would also require more editing, which I find more difficult than writing...)

@SapphireAlena -- you're the one and only Star Wars fanfic writer I know here on WP. Any suggestions? LOL

@SarahSchott Start right in the middle of action.

@SapphireAlena great tips, thanks@ Especially that last one...
I followed everything except your very first one. What do you mean by 'start media in res?'

SapphireAlena

@SarahSchott Start media in res. Leave a good hook at the end of the chapters. Keep your narrative moving. Avoid the info dump. Use action tags instead of dialogue tags. Make sure each character has an easily identifiable motivation. Highly recommend you write the climax scene first in a rough draft off Wattpad. It will give you something to shoot for.

I am absolutely and 100% shocked...

"The Cunning Man" MADE THE ONC 2021 SHORTLIST!!!!! Aaaaaahhh!!!

This is the very first time I ever wrote a novella and the very first time I ever submitted an entry into the Open Novella Contest. My goal was to reach the Shortlist, but I never expected that I would! I am just...speechless with delight and excitement.

Thank you so much to EVERYONE who read TCM, who commented it, who encouraged me, and who kept me writing to the very end. I am just beyond giddy right now. ❤

Holy moly!! "The Cunning Man" made the ONC 2021 Longlist!!!!

Ahhhhh!!! I've been so busy, I forgot today was the day the longlist was being announced! This means that TCM has the chance to make it to the ONC shortlist!!

With "The Cunning Man" done (for now, as a novella), I'm turning my attention back on "Dark Country". I'll be taking it down for now and republishing with updated chapters.
"The Cunning Man" taught me a lot of important things about my writing style -- not least of which is: follow my instincts. I learned a valuable lesson about not over-complicating the plot, and I also learned about not worrying too much what people think as I'm writing the rough draft. With all that in mind...I'm going to focus as best as I can on writing "Dark Country" for ME. I hope ya'll will enjoy the journey with me, of course, but I'll worry about polish and publication after I've actually finished it.
My goal is to start posting a chapter of "Dark Country" every week, which is probably the very best I can do with my current job situation. Probably Fridays or Sundays. I'm also going to try this whole "at least write half, if not all of the book before posting it" trick that I know a lot of other WP writers do. That was another thing I learned with "The Cunning Man"...it might take me a few false starts to get to a point that I'm happy with. I'm sure everyone would appreciate a lot less confusion in that area going forward, LOL.

Hi Sarah! Thank you for the follow, and for your service to the country. I just started reading Cunning Man and im loving it. If you enjoy Western fiction, you may enjoy my western, A Home West of Nowhere. Please let me know if you like any of my works and comments sre greatly appreciated.

YA'LL. "The Cunning Man" is FINISHED!
If you've been reading along, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you go back to Chapter 1 and start over. I started editing it for submission and before I knew it, the plot went down a path I haven't thought of even once since I started it. This proves to me that I'm definitely an intuitive writer and a total pantser...but I'm proud of the result. :) Enjoy and let me know what you think!

@WezleyBrookz thank you so much for the encouragement! And for sharing your story of last minute ONC submission, lol. I never expected when I signed up for it, that it would be as stressful as it became! O.o

@HOSAM_MZ just be aware it has strong romance elements if that's not your thing.
