Amity absolutely despised university. In fact, she was only there for her mother. The least she could do to was try and get a decent education after barely graduating high school and being the worst child ever.
They had never been calm and collected. Whether it was her ADHD symptoms she refused to get checked out because of her social anxiety (and lack of money, but that wasn't as big of a point than the former) or her yelling with Clay while playing Minecraft, they weren't the easiest of children to put up with — especially when you took in the factor of their siblings.
Amity had a complicated relationship with her older brother. The pair were both very competitive and Amity would be lying if they said her brother had nothing to do with their enrolment to college and the choice of Philosophy as a major.
Ellis Star may have been competitive, but he never would have asked to lose his sister in a battle for his mother's attention. In fact, he had always wanted to be close with Amity. Instead, he found himself trying to beat her in their playful wrestling matches and their video games. He even managed to master chess in order to beat her (although, he discovered that she was actually almost as good as he was so he avoided playing against them in fear of losing).
