In 1612 in Pendle, and all around the country, superstition was rife and misfortune could hit homesteads at any time without warning or reason. When illness blighted family members or livestock, when nature was cruel and bleak, the wise person was called to write a charm.
Written charms could combat the curses of witches and ward against the evil-doings of malevolent spirits. With words of the old religions and the new, of Paganism, Catholic prayer and the King's new church, the cunning folk would create new meaning. Magic was born out of letters and symbols that could be carved into wooden sills and frames, or written on paper and slipped into cracks and crevices. The cunning folk would twist and turn these words and symbols until they were no longer the prayers of established religion, but were words of protection and comfort.
They were Words of Power.
