"Nehemiah Dajuan Ajani Reed, you have two seconds to get your behind in this kitchen before I smack the—"

"What you middle naming me for? Who did I offend?" I can't help but to let out a laugh as I stroll towards my family's kitchen, catching sight of the frustration all over my mother's face. Her loose curls fall just below her shoulders, and the sunlight pouring through the window behind her haloes around her silhouette. As soon as my foot surpasses the doorway, the smothering scent of a hundred different foods wafts up my noise and swirls around my empty stomach. My gaze bounces between the row of bowls on the kitchen's island, brimming with different confectionery treats, and then back towards my mum. I don't miss the way she grinds her teeth and drums her acrylic fingernails against the island's worktop, impatiently waiting till I'm within armsreach before she smacks me upside my head. Although I see it coming, I let her. "Nice. What's the problem?"

"You and your sperm donor are in there playing games when our guests are pulling up as we speak," she tuts. She smoothes down the fabric of her tan-coloured, maxi dress, huffing out an exasperated breath. I frown, as she snatches two plastic bags stuffed with burger buns from in front of her and shoves them towards me.

"Now, why am I in it?" My dad calls from the living room. I hear the ache of the couch as he stands up, followed by the scuffing of his slides against the plank tiled floor. "Everything's done, you want me to stand outside like a doorman?"
