According to a report by the British film institute, which analysed diversity in UK films released between 2015 and 2018, only 13% of the lead actors were from ethnic minority backgrounds, despite the fact that ethnic minorities comprise nearly 40% of the population in London alone.

So, how does this affect ethnic minorities?

Well.

Numerous studies show that a lack of diversity in the media can contribute to feelings of invisibility, alienation and low self-esteem. People of colour may try to bleach their skin to look ethnically European and so on.

These findings underscore the systemic barriers and biases that contribute to the marginalisation of people of colour. Addressing these issues requires proactive measures to promote diversity and representation at all levels of the entertainment industry, from casting decisions to production staff.
