Chapter Twenty One - Recess

Ava's pov

"I don't have anything to wear" I told Chloe on our way to the girls locker room. "Don't worry, you can borrow mine." She said and pushed the girls locker room open.

The room was spacious with pink lockers lining the wall and there was a door at the end which I guess is the bathroom.

"Do you know where your locker is?" Chloe asked removing her gym clothes from her backpack.

"Yeah, the principal showed it to us when we came" I looked around before I pointed at the one five lockers away from Chloe's locker. "I think it's that one." I went there before putting my combination, and it clicked open.

Chloe gave me one of her clothes which was a shirt and shorts and she grabbed one too, but mine is colour blue and hers is red. "Do you want to change here or go to the bathroom" she asked adjusting her glasses.

"The bathroom"

"Good choice" I laughed and we went to the bathroom.

"The shirt is going to be a little loose on you but you can tie it by the side or tuck it in the shorts" Chloe said when we enter the bathroom.

"Don't worry, I will manage" I smiled at her and went into one of the cubicles. I closed the lid of the toilet seat and kept my bag on top. I removed my school uniform and put on the gym clothes. The shirt was a little loose but I tied it into a knot by the side instead of tucking it into the short. I was glad the shorts had strings that I tied tightly if not I would've folded it and it will look weird with the shirt.

I folded my uniform and put them in my bag and came out of the cubicle. I saw some girls in the bathroom too and they were all in their gym clothes. Some of them were brushing their hair or standing in front of the mirror applying colourless lipgloss on their lips.

I went to the mirror and ran my fingers through my hair before putting it in a low ponytail. Chloe came out in her red gym clothes and washed her hands and stuck it under the hand dryer.

"Are you ready to go"she asked me and I nodded.

We went to our lockers first and kept our bags there and she lead me to the school field.

The school field has swings, slides, climbing structures, jungle gyms and many more playground equipments.

"What do you wanna do" I asked Chloe. I saw Lexi playing tag with two of her new friends and some other students too.

She shrugged her shoulders "why don't we go on the swings" I nod my head and we went to the swings.

We were swinging for a while when two girls and three boys came to us. "Hey! Four eyes! You shouldn't be swinging on that or else you might break it" one of the boy who was relatively bigger than the rest and had strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes said and the other four laughed loudly gaining some of the students attention that were close to us.

"Just leave me alone Jimmy" Chloe sighed and looked down at her feet. One of the girls started talking, "should I tell you something about Chloe" she said to me but it didn't sound like a question. I wanted to reply with a 'no' but she continue "well, she use to pee in her pants even when she was in third grade and her parents are not as rich as all of us and she's the ugliest girl in the whole fifth grade." She said with a smirk on her face.

I looked at Chloe and I saw her wiping her eyes. I didn't need to be told that she's crying. "Ok. So... Why are you telling me all this" I asked the girl and she looked at me puzzled. "Are you telling me so that I shouldn't befriend her. If so, then you're wrong cause I will rather be her friend than be associated with you."

I stood up and grabbed Chloe's hand and tried to walk away from Jimmy and his friends. But before I could, the other girl pushed me and I fell on my butt. "Ava!" Chloe gasped and quickly came to my aid.

"Hey! Don't touch my sister!" I heard Lexi shout and looked up to see her glaring at the girl that pushed me. The girl glared at her before looking away and Lexi came to my side. Jimmy glared at me before walking away with his four friends behind him.

"Ava are you alright. You're not hurt are you?" She asked looking worried. "I'm fine I'm not hurt" I said and she and Chloe helped me stand on my feet.

"Are you sure"

"I'm sure"

One of her friends called her name but she ignored her. "Lexi I'm fine, seriously, and Chloe is here to help me. Go to your friends." She looked at me and I nodded my head in encouragement. She looked at Chloe and said "please take care of my sister okay" Chloe nodded and Lexi left.

"Your sister really cares bout you" Chloe said helping to seat in a chair that was arranged at the far end of the field.

"Yeah, she does" I replied with a small smile. "whose older, you or her"

"She's older than me"

"With how many minutes"

"Thirty minutes"

"I wish I wasn't the oldest" Chloe said after a few minutes of silence with a frown and I looked at her confused. "Why?"

"Because being the oldest is hard. You have a lot of responsibilities on your head. You are always expected to have good grades, taking care of your younger ones, being a role model for your siblings and being the perfect daughter for your parents. It gets hard sometimes and I wish I wasn't the oldest" she said her voice cracking at the end and tears escaping her eyes but she quickly wiped it away.

I hugged her and rubbed her back in comfort "don't worry. It's going to be alright."

We spent the remaining period laughing and joking around when she stopped crying and said she doesn't want to burden me with her problems and started telling me funny stories her siblings did.
