There were a million reasons why you loved Eiji Kikumaru.

He was sunshine on a rainy day, laughter after tears, and the one person who could make even the worst days feel like a match point victory.

You'd met him back in middle school. He was already the energetic acrobat of Seigaku, flinging himself around tennis courts and into people's hearts with his charm and cat-like antics. You never thought someone like him—so vibrant, so full of life—would notice someone like you. But he did. And he never let you forget it.

Even years later, when both your lives had taken off—he in a steady, well-loved career working with kids in sports therapy, you balancing a busy job and home life—he still spoiled you like he did when you were teenagers.

"Ne, (Y/N)-chan~" he'd coo as he walked through the front door, arms full of your favorite snacks. "I brought those mochi you like! The strawberry ones with the soft insides! Just like you~ Nyaa~!"

You rolled your eyes but smiled every time. That was Eiji.

But there was one thing even his unshakable joy couldn't fully shield you both from.

Children.

You couldn't have them.

At first, it was just a whisper of concern. Then it turned into doctor's appointments, a failed round of hormone treatments, and endless cycles of hope and heartbreak. Eiji never once made you feel less.

"It's not your fault," he'd whisper at night, fingers laced tightly with yours. "If anything, I should be the one blamed! Maybe my swimmers got lost on the way, nya~!"

You'd laugh, even through tears.

You stopped using birth control. He stopped using protection. Still nothing.

Eventually, both of you agreed—enough was enough.

You needed peace.

Until it happened.

You were standing in the bathroom one morning, clutching the test in your shaking hands. Two lines. Clear as day.

"Eiji... Eiji!" you called, voice cracking.

He came running in, toothbrush still in his mouth. "Mmh?"

You held the test up, tears already rolling down your cheeks. "I'm pregnant. Eiji, it finally worked. I'm... we're...!"

The toothbrush hit the floor. His mouth dropped open. Then he scooped you up and spun you around so fast your head spun.

"YES! YES, YES, YES!!!" he shouted, jumping around the bathroom in nothing but his pajama pants. "Nyaa~! We're gonna be parents! Parents, (Y/N)-chan!!"

A baby shower followed, full of friends from school and work—Fuji, Tezuka, Oishi, even Kaidoh showed up awkwardly with a stuffed frog. The love was overwhelming.

But pregnancy wasn't easy on you.

The nausea was constant. Your emotions swung like a pendulum. Your back hurt, your ankles swelled, and some days you just wanted to curl up and cry. But Eiji was always there.

"Okay! Emergency ramen with extra pickles, comin' right up!" he'd sing, running into the kitchen like it was a battlefield.

When you snapped at him for forgetting to put the lid back on the ice cream, he just bowed dramatically. "I accept my punishment, your majesty. May I serve by massaging your feet?"

You laughed through tears. He kissed them away.

Then came the ride home from your last hospital check-up, a week before your due date. Everything looked fine.

You sat in the passenger seat, hand resting on your round belly, while Eiji made silly faces at you from the driver's seat during red lights.

"I hope she gets your nose," you mused.

"But my reflexes!" he added quickly. "So she can jump off trees and land on her feet like her old man—nya ~!"

You were laughing when the car flipped.

The world went sideways. Glass shattered. Screams—your scream—his name.

Darkness.

When you opened your eyes, it was the hospital ceiling above you. You couldn't move. You couldn't feel anything but pain. And dread.

"Eiji...?"

He was there in a second, his hand gripping yours like a lifeline.

"I'm here, (Y/N)-chan. I'm right here," he said, voice cracking.

"She's okay, right?" you asked, even though you already knew. His silence said everything.

Fuji stood outside with Oishi and your parents, worry etched into every face. The doctor came out quietly. The hallway fell silent.

"I'm sorry... the baby didn't make it."

You screamed.

Eiji caught you as you tried to curl into yourself.

"She's gone..." You sobbed. "She's gone, Eiji... she was right here and now she's—"

He held you so tightly it hurt. His voice shook as he cried into your shoulder. "I know... I know... I'm so sorry..."

"Why?! What did we do?! Why us?!"

"I don't know... I don't know... but I'm not leaving you, (Y/N)-chan. We're gonna get through this. We always do."

Years passed.

And you did get through it.

There were more tears. Quiet nights. Sad anniversaries. But you kept going, together.

Eventually, you tried again.

And this time... she stayed.

A little girl with your eyes and Eiji's energy. She lit up your world like her father, bouncing around the living room in mismatched socks and shouting, "Nyaa~!" just to make you laugh.

Now, you're standing with Eiji again—this time in a chapel, both dressed up, surrounded by friends.

Your daughter is at the altar, holding her husband's hands, tears of joy in her eyes.

"She's so beautiful," you whisper.

Eiji nods, his arm around your shoulders. "She looks just like you."

She walks down the aisle and pulls both of you into a tight embrace.

"You're the best parents I could've ever asked for. I love you."

You choke on a sob. "I love you too..."

Eiji kisses the side of your head. "We did it, (Y/N)-chan. We really did it."

And you smile, tears and all, because no matter what life threw at you—loss, heartbreak, miracles, love—Eiji was always there.

Through every setback, with you.
