This is a post-apocalyptic story, located 500 years ahead from now. It is based on several plausible scientific hypothesis: the use of nanites for medical purposes is experimented right now, and viruses are used in genetic therapy. The supposed cause of the havoc, the explosion of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, in the Canaries Islands, is a probability, and the consequences would be as described, hidden lab excluded.
I imagined a World returned to medieval customs, with only bits of technology preserved, because it is mostly what happens every time a civilization is destroyed, e.g. the Dark ages at the end of the Roman Empire.
I am in the process of editing/rewriting this story, which was my first, so please forgive the rough state of the old chapters.
