he is wearing black again today,
which seems like a horrible idea.
summer is finally here,
and the sun is beating down on our small town relentlessly.
"hi."
he squeaks when he replies, "h-hi."
i try not to let my smile show
and lean forward,
placing my elbows on the soil-littered counter.
he coughs. "is there anything you need?"
then he notices the sunflower tucked into my hair
and smiles a lovely smile.
"you kept them."
"of course i did. now what time do you get off?"
